Background

Fierce Beast Tribulation

Hongjun first appears during the Fierce Beast Tribulation after silently killing a group of Fierce Beasts, including a Taiyi Golden Immortal-level creature, without harming the surrounding landscape. He introduces himself to Qing Xuan while carrying the damaged Creation Jade Disc, whose resonance bears the Three Thousand Great Daos 7.

He identifies Qing Xuan as an Innate Divine Being nurtured by Buzhou Mountain and takes an interest in Qing Xuan’s unusual World Dao. Hongjun explains that he is traveling east to find a way to confront Beast Emperor Shen Ni, since the Creation Jade Disc excels at Dao comprehension rather than direct slaughter 8.

Hongjun and Qing Xuan travel together for three thousand years, clearing Fierce Beasts and verifying one another’s Dao. When the decisive northern battle begins, Hongjun invites Qing Xuan to join him; Qing Xuan declines because his cultivation is insufficient for a Great Luo battlefield, and Hongjun accepts the decision without pressure 8.

Dao Discussions and the Great Luo Path

After the northern campaign, Hongjun visits Qing Xuan at Buzhou Mountain after sensing the divided origin of the Twenty-Four-Grade Creation Green Lotus. He recognizes Qing Yi as the portion that transformed into an Innate Divine Being and affirms that her transformation gave her an independent future rather than harming her Dao 14 15.

Hongjun later resumes Dao discussions with Qing Xuan and Qing Yi for twelve Epoch Cycles. He demonstrates the essential distinction between Taiyi and Great Luo through an unchanging strand of Great Luo Dao intent that persists through a world’s creation and return to Chaos. The three paths—Hongjun’s Three Thousand Great Daos, Qing Xuan’s World Dao, and Qing Yi’s Creation Dao—mutually validate one another without becoming one 16.

When Shen Ni falls and the Fierce Beast Tribulation ends, Hongjun departs to verify and consolidate the gains from their discussion 16 17.

Dao-Devil War

During the Dragon-Han Tribulation, Hongjun warns Qing Xuan and Qing Yi that Ancestor Dragon, Yuanfeng, and Primordial Qilin seek to surpass Great Luo by merging their Dao Fruits with their races’ Fate Aura. He also reveals his plan to confront Luohou at Mount Sumeru with Yang Mei, Qiankun Ancestor, and Yin-Yang Ancestor 49.

After Luohou’s Immortal Slaughtering Sword Formation is broken, Qiankun Ancestor, Yin-Yang Ancestor, and Yang Mei turn on both Luohou and the badly wounded Hongjun. A second manifestation of Hongjun intervenes with purple lightning, after which his Three Corpses overwhelm the ambushers 53 54.

Hongjun kills Qiankun Ancestor and Yin-Yang Ancestor, severely damages Yang Mei as he escapes into Chaos, and destroys Luohou’s Dao body. Luohou’s remaining True Spirit escapes within the World-Destroying Black Lotus. Hongjun claims the Qiankun Cauldron, Taiji Diagram, and Godslayer Spear after the battle 54.

Heavenly Dao and Zixiao Palace

Following the Heavenly Dao’s birth, Hongjun discovers Blue Star’s observation of the Primordial World. Rather than severing the connection, he compresses the endlessly regenerating world barrier into a finite boundary and leaves a Heavenly Dao Mark within it, giving the outsiders a possible route to enter without directly opening a passage for them 56.

Hongjun later tells Qing Xuan and Qing Yi that he has chosen a path linked to the Heavenly Dao. During another multi-Epoch Dao discussion, he presents an Immortal Dao harmonized with the Primordial World, contrasting it with Qing Xuan’s return of myriad laws to Chaos and Qing Yi’s creation of all things from primordial origin 57.

He gives Qing Xuan and Qing Yi the Qiankun Cauldron and Godslayer Spear in repayment for their protection of the western Earth Veins, asking only that they grant one future request after attaining Primordial Unity if it lies within their power 58. He subsequently establishes Zixiao Palace beyond the heavens and announces lectures on the Immortal Dao for all beings with affinity 58.

Appearance

Hongjun initially appears as a plain-robed Daoist seemingly in his twenties, with upright features and an aura so natural that he seems merged with heaven and earth. In a later visit to Purple Star, he is described as an elderly plain-robed Daoist carrying a whisk 7 48.

He values distinct paths rather than demanding conformity. During discussions with Qing Xuan and Qing Yi, he recognizes that their Daos cannot simply be absorbed into his own method; later, he does not force the Three Corpses path onto them because their roots and goals differ from those of most Primordial World beings 16 84.

As the Heavenly Dao’s representative, Hongjun is pragmatic but not needlessly restrictive. He makes Blue Star’s approach possible without guaranteeing success, and he teaches the Immortal Dao broadly while openly acknowledging its limits, including its incompatibility with the Witch Clan 56 84.
