Background
Tang San is the son of Tang Hao, the Clear Sky Douluo, and Ah Yin, a transformed Hundred-Thousand-Year Blue Silver Emperor. Tang Hao concealed both his identity and Tang San’s heritage while raising him in Holy Soul Village as a blacksmith’s son. 117
Tang Hao later tells Tang San that Spirit Hall hunted Ah Yin for her Soul Ring and Soul Bone, leading to her death. Tang Hao privately recognizes that his own choices contributed to her exposure, but withholds this from Tang San and directs his grief toward Spirit Hall. 117 118
Personality
Tang San initially presents himself as calm, cautious, and reluctant to involve himself in strangers’ disputes. At the Rose Hotel, he attempts to leave rather than escalate Dai Mubai’s confrontation with Zhu Zhuqing and Fang Fan. 3
He naturally assumes a coordinating role among the Shrek applicants, requesting each person’s martial soul and combat specialty before proposing a plan against Zhao Wuji. 8 However, defeat and humiliation at Fang Fan’s hands turn his resentment into open hostility. He uses Blue Silver Grass, hidden weapons, and movement techniques in attempts to restrain or kill Fang Fan. 11 13
Tang San is fiercely attached to Xiao Wu, reacts with grief when she leaves Shrek, and later remains conflicted over his father’s concealed past and weakened condition. 17 18 117 By the time he learns of Ah Yin’s death, his grief hardens into hatred of Spirit Hall and a desire to grow strong enough that he can no longer be humiliated or overpowered. 118 119
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
Tang San’s visible martial soul is Blue Silver Grass, which he employs as a control-type Soul Master. 7 8
- Blue Silver Entanglement — summons barbed vines from the ground to bind a target; Tang San used it to trap Fang Fan during Zhao Wuji and Dai Mubai’s simultaneous attack. 11
- His control techniques can be destroyed by Fang Fan’s seven-colored sword energy. 13
Hidden Weapons
Tang San uses concealed Tang Sect weapons with rapid finger techniques and Soul Power-enhanced throws.
- Uses Piercing Bone Nails, Flying Needles, Willow Leaf Darts, and Money Darts in volleys from multiple directions. 12 13
- Dragon Beard Needles — hair-thin weapons designed to penetrate Soul Power barriers and burrow through the bloodstream toward meridians and vital points. 13 64
- His Dragon Beard Needles penetrated Tang Hao’s defense through a pre-existing hand wound, disrupting the Titled Douluo’s Soul Power control. 64
- Fang Fan evaded Tang San’s earlier hidden-weapon barrage by shifting among seven-colored flying swords. 13
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
A movement technique that leaves unpredictable afterimages and enables erratic changes of direction. 12
- Used while launching hidden weapons against Fang Fan. 12 13
- Failed to create enough distance once Fang Fan emerged behind him through sword light. 13
Purple Demon Eye and Mysterious Jade Hand
Tang San uses Purple Demon Eye to enhance his vision and Mysterious Jade Hand as a defensive technique.
- Purple Demon Eye allowed him to barely perceive Fang Fan’s nearly invisible Seven-Colored Light Sword. 4
- Mysterious Jade Hand blocked Fang Fan’s flying kick from shattering his hands, but could not stop the impact from injuring his arms, chest, and internal organs. 11 12
Eight Spider Lances
Tang San gained the Eight Spider Lances, an External Soul Bone, after hunting a Ten Thousand Year Man-Faced Demon Spider. 69
- The eight crystalline spider legs unfold from his back when activated. 69
- He later trains to coordinate the External Soul Bone with Blue Silver Grass and his hidden weapons. 108
Equipment
- Sleeve Arrows — concealed mechanisms Tang San reaches for during combat. 9 13
- Tang Sect hidden weapons — including Piercing Bone Nails, Flying Needles, Willow Leaf Darts, Money Darts, and Dragon Beard Needles. 12 13 64
- Eight Spider Lances — External Soul Bone obtained in Star Dou Forest. 69
Relationships
- Tang Hao — father and secret protector. Tang Hao watches over Tang San from the shadows, later reveals himself as the Clear Sky Douluo, and recounts Ah Yin’s death. Tang San accidentally injures him with Dragon Beard Needles during the Beast Tide. 14 64 65 117
- Ah Yin — mother; a transformed Hundred-Thousand-Year Blue Silver Emperor who died after being hunted by Spirit Hall for her Soul Ring and Soul Bone. 117 118
- Xiao Wu — closest companion and protector. She defends Tang San during his clashes with Fang Fan, but flees Shrek after fearing Tang Hao has identified her as a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast. 12 17 18
- Yu Xiaogang — teacher. Tang San respects him and trains according to his methods, but becomes unsettled by Xiaogang’s increasingly obsessive demands for revenge against Fang Fan. 69 108
- Fang Fan — principal adversary. Tang San attempts to bind and ambush him during the Shrek test, then suffers severe injuries, repeated slaps, and public humiliation in return. 11 13 14
- Dai Mubai — Shrek associate and fellow opponent of Fang Fan. Tang San joins Dai Mubai and Zhao Wuji’s attack during the entrance test. 11 12
- Flender and Zhao Wuji — Shrek’s dean and teacher. They help lead Tang San away from Tang Hao, Da Ming, Er Ming, and the Beast Tide after Tang San recognizes his father. 64 65
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shrek entrance test
Tang San arrives in Suotuo City with Xiao Wu and enrolls at Shrek Academy as a Rank 29 Soul Grandmaster. 3 7 During the fourth test, he tries to organize Zhu Zhuqing, Ning Rongrong, Xiao Wu, and Fang Fan against Zhao Wuji, but Zhu Zhuqing rejects his authority in favor of Fang Fan. 8
Tang San witnesses Fang Fan overwhelm Zhao Wuji with a single sword strike and recognizes that he cannot block or evade such an attack in his current state. 9 After Fang Fan’s attacks nearly strike him and Xiao Wu, Tang San uses Blue Silver Entanglement to restrain Fang Fan for Zhao Wuji and Dai Mubai’s killing blow. Fang Fan escapes, counters with a flying kick, and leaves Tang San severely injured. 10 11
Conflict with Fang Fan
After recovering enough to stand, Tang San attacks Fang Fan with hidden weapons and Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track while Xiao Wu, Zhao Wuji, and Dai Mubai join the assault. 12 Fang Fan later destroys his Blue Silver Grass, evades his Dragon Beard Needles, and slaps him twice before stomping his face into the ground. 13 14
Tang Hao’s intervention exposes him as Tang San’s father, but Du Busi forces Tang Hao to withdraw. Tang San remains physically injured and humiliated following the confrontation. 14 15 17
Xiao Wu’s departure and Star Dou Forest
While Tang San is bedridden, Xiao Wu leaves Shrek for Star Dou Forest, fearing that Tang Hao intends to use her as Tang San’s future Soul Ring and Soul Bone. Tang San tries to follow her despite his injuries but cannot speak or move effectively. 17 18
Tang San later breaks through Rank 30 and acquires the Eight Spider Lances. 69 During Tang Hao’s retreat from Da Ming, Er Ming, and a Beast Tide, Tang San mistakes his blood-covered father for an enemy and attacks him with hidden weapons, including Dragon Beard Needles. 63 64 He realizes Tang Hao’s identity only after hearing him call “Xiao San.” 65
Truth of his heritage
Tang Hao eventually returns to Blue Tyrant Academy and explains his identity as a Rank 95 Titled Douluo of the Clear Sky Sect, as well as Ah Yin’s identity and death. 117 Tang San responds with hatred toward Spirit Hall and joins Yu Xiaogang in viewing Fang Fan as an immediate threat. 118 119
