Background
Yu Xiaogang was born to Yu Yuanzhen, leader of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. When his Martial Soul mutated into Luo Sanpao, the clan considered him a disgrace, but Yu Yuanzhen defended him, named him young clan master, and invested the clan’s best resources in him. Xiaogang ultimately failed to meet those expectations, lost his position, and withdrew from the clan; despite this, Yu Yuanzhen continued to regard him as his son 91 92.
He built his identity around Martial Soul theory, particularly the maxim, “There are no useless Martial Souls, only useless Soul Masters.” He became known as the “Grandmaster,” served as a Spirit Hall Honorary Elder, and took Tang San as his disciple 40 41. His own cultivation, however, stalled at Rank 29, and Fang Fan later argued that his progress had depended heavily on Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan resources 41 42.
Twenty years before the present story, Xiaogang was involved with Liu Erlong. Their wedding was interrupted when Yu Luomian revealed their supposed uncle-niece relationship. Fang Fan later exposed that Xiaogang himself had written to Yu Luomian, and that he had preserved Liu Erlong as a possible fallback should his ambitions fail 43 44.
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is a middle-aged man who favors worn black robes and habitually stands with his hands behind his back, chin raised in an attempt to project scholarly dignity 40 69.
- His usual clothing is washed-faded and visibly aged. 69 108
- After Fang Fan’s confrontation and Liu Erlong’s slap, he is left bruised, swollen, and marked by a split lip. 69
- The Lucky Charm’s misfortunes leave him thin, filthy, injured, and so disheveled that Spirit Hall guards mistake him for a beggar. 94 95
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is deeply proud of his reputation as a theorist. When Fang Fan challenges his knowledge of Soul Beasts, criticizes his proposed development path for the Seven-Colored Light Sword, and exposes his stagnant cultivation, Xiaogang’s confidence collapses completely 40 41 42.
He avoids direct responsibility when confronted with painful truths. After Liu Erlong arrives, he blames Fang Fan for his humiliation and relies on her instinct to protect him; when she demands an explanation for their past, he attempts to flee rather than answer 42 44. His exposure reveals a tendency to preserve relationships, status, and future options without committing to them.
His father’s death transforms his humiliation into obsessive hatred of Fang Fan. Rather than seeking strength himself, he repeatedly looks to others—Bibi Dong, Tang Hao, Tang San, and the Clear Sky Sect—to pursue revenge on his behalf 91 96 108 118.
Abilities & Skills
Luo Sanpao
Yu Xiaogang’s mutated Martial Soul is Luo Sanpao. Its weak innate foundation is central to his lifelong frustration with cultivation.
- He possessed only 0.5 innate Soul Power. 41
- Luo Sanpao can emit purple flames infused with Soul Power. 94
- Xiaogang uses it to kill a maddened black bull during his journey to Spirit Hall. 94
- His Rank 29 cultivation severely limits his standing among high-level Soul Masters. 41 90
Martial Soul Theory
Yu Xiaogang presents himself as an authority on Martial Souls and Soul Beasts, but several of his conclusions are directly undermined.
- He claims to know every Martial Soul and Soul Beast, yet cannot identify the Titan Snow Demon Ape of the Far North. 40 41
- He recommends developing Fang Fan’s Seven-Colored Light Sword as a control-type Martial Soul with vine-like Soul Rings. 41
- His assertion that weapon and beast Martial Souls cannot form a Martial Soul Fusion Skill is disproven when Fang Fan’s Seven-Colored Light Sword fuses with Zhu Zhuqing’s Hell Spirit Cat. 43
- Fang Fan challenges Xiaogang’s maxim by using Xiaogang’s own stalled cultivation and mutated Martial Soul as counterexamples. 41 42
Equipment
- Spirit Hall Honorary Elder Token — confirms his status and grants him access to Spirit Hall despite his condition upon arrival. 94 95
- Old coin pouch — carried during his journey to Spirit Hall; five Gold Soul Coins vanish after Fang Fan targets him with the Lucky Charm. 93 94
- Unsent letter to Bibi Dong — retained from their former relationship and carried as he travels to seek her help. 91
Relationships
- Yu Yuanzhen — father and former Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan leader. Yu Yuanzhen supported Xiaogang despite Luo Sanpao’s mutation; Xiaogang’s grief over his death drives his pursuit of revenge. 90 91
- Liu Erlong — former lover and estranged fiancée. Fang Fan reveals that Xiaogang alerted Yu Luomian to their wedding; Liu Erlong ultimately rejects him after realizing his evasiveness and self-serving motives. 43 44
- Tang San — disciple. Xiaogang praises Tang San’s growth but later pressures him to find Tang Hao and enlist the Clear Sky Sect against Fang Fan. 69 108
- Bibi Dong — former lover and hoped-for source of revenge. Xiaogang seeks her aid after Yu Yuanzhen’s death, but she coldly rejects him and has Chrysanthemum Douluo expel him from Spirit Hall. 91 96
- Fang Fan — enemy and source of Xiaogang’s public humiliation. Fang Fan dismantles his theories, exposes his history with Liu Erlong, indirectly contributes to Yu Yuanzhen’s death, and selects him as the Lucky Charm’s target. 41 44 90 93
- Flender — longtime associate who attempts to restrain Xiaogang when his fixation on revenge becomes dangerous. 108 109
- Tang Hao — Xiaogang views the Clear Sky Douluo as a possible weapon against Fang Fan and urges him to seek Clear Sky Sect support. 108 118
Story Role / Major Arcs
Confrontation with Fang Fan
Yu Xiaogang encounters Fang Fan in Heaven Dou City and attempts to recruit him as a disciple. He proposes developing the Seven-Colored Light Sword as a control-type Martial Soul, but Fang Fan exposes his ignorance of the Titan Snow Demon Ape, his Rank 29 stagnation, and the flaws in his theories 40 41.
The criticism breaks Xiaogang emotionally. He collapses in an alley and lashes out at Fang Fan, only to regain confidence when Liu Erlong arrives and assumes he has been bullied 42.
Exposure of His Past with Liu Erlong
When Liu Erlong attacks Fang Fan’s group, Fang Fan and Zhu Zhuqing counter her with the Seven-Colored Nether Slash. Fang Fan then reveals that Xiaogang notified Yu Luomian of Liu Erlong’s wedding location 43.
Cornered by Liu Erlong, Xiaogang admits he regretted marrying her and attempted to flee. Fang Fan further exposes that Xiaogang had intended to preserve Liu Erlong as a fallback. Liu Erlong slaps him and leaves him weeping in the alley 44.
Father’s Death and Revenge Obsession
After learning that Yu Yuanzhen was killed following his conflict with Fang Fan, Xiaogang returns to the devastated Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. At his father’s unmarked grave, he remembers Yu Yuanzhen’s support and swears to destroy Fang Fan at any cost 90 91.
He travels to Spirit Hall to seek Bibi Dong’s help, enduring a string of humiliating disasters caused by Fang Fan’s Lucky Charm. His Honorary Elder token eventually gains him an audience, but Bibi Dong rejects both his appeal to their past and his request for vengeance 93 94 96.
Return to Blue Tyrant Academy
Xiaogang returns to Blue Tyrant Academy physically weakened and politically isolated. Learning that Fang Fan has become the Pacifying-the-State King, he redirects his hopes toward Tang Hao and the Clear Sky Sect, alarming Tang San, Liu Erlong, and Flender 108 109.
By the time Tang Hao declares Fang Fan an immediate target, Xiaogang openly supports killing Fang Fan and Du Busi, accepting that he cannot achieve revenge through his own strength. 118

Trivia
- Yu Xiaogang’s famous theory is contradicted twice in rapid succession: first by his inability to identify the Titan Snow Demon Ape, then by Fang Fan and Zhu Zhuqing’s weapon-and-beast Martial Soul Fusion Skill. 41 43
- Fang Fan chooses Xiaogang as the target of the Lucky Charm for two months, causing a prolonged chain of absurd accidents and humiliations. 93 94
- Despite having left the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan for decades, Xiaogang becomes the strongest remaining person at its abandoned headquarters because the elite Soul Masters have fled and he is still Rank 29. 90
