Although he originally intended to remain at the academy for another six years so that research would not be interrupted, he ultimately graduated early with the other prodigies. He skipped the graduation ceremony, stating that he would join the Second Division and continue researching instead 14 21.

Yoruichi later promoted him to Third Seat of the Second Division and assigned him to oversee the Surveillance Corps. When Kirio Hikifune left for Squad Zero, Yoruichi nominated him to replace her as Captain of the Twelfth Division, citing both his research interests and his suitability for the post. He passed the captain assessment despite arriving late and behaving awkwardly during his inauguration 43 56 61.

During the Hollowfication crisis, Central 46 accused Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi of conducting the experiment. After Shinji revealed that Aizen was responsible, Yoruichi rescued Urahara and Tessai; Urahara then devised a plan to protect the Hollowfied victims with Spiritual-Pressure-Severing Gigai and flee Soul Society 67 69.

In the World of the Living, he established Urahara Shop as a base for research, training, and preparation against future threats. Following the war against Aizen, the new Central 46 pardoned him, and he returned to Soul Society to continue experimental work beneath the Sōkyoku 79 316.

Urahara presents himself as playful, evasive, and unserious. He skips formal occasions, arrives late to his own captaincy inauguration, and routinely masks concern or calculation with jokes, theatrical reactions, and a foolish grin 21 61.

Beneath that façade, he is a pragmatic strategist with a strong sense of responsibility. He recognizes when Ichigo is too weak to save Rukia, establishes a strict training schedule rather than indulging Ichigo's impatience, and prepares contingencies for looming threats such as Aizen and the Arrancar 79 83 261.

His curiosity can become reckless. He creates experiments and tests to expose weaknesses in his allies, yet sometimes gives them broad instructions without knowing exactly how they will proceed 130.
