Urahara presents himself as absentminded, teasing, and socially awkward. History

Urahara graduated early from Shin’ō Academy after one year, already possessing exceptional spiritual power, a Zanpakutō, and Shikai. Rather than attend the graduation ceremony, he chose the Second Division so he could focus on research and invention. 61 Yoruichi later promoted him to Third Seat and gave him responsibility over the Detention Unit and Maggot’s Nest. 41

His aptitude for research led Yoruichi to recommend him for the vacant Twelfth Division captaincy. Although he panicked at the prospect of leading Hiyori Sarugaki, he passed the captain examination and was formally appointed captain after Kirio Hikifune’s promotion. 74 87 As captain, he founded the Technology Development Bureau and recruited Mayuri Kurotsuchi from imprisonment. 73
