Background
Ichigo was born to Isshin Kurosaki—formerly Isshin Shiba, captain of the Tenth Division—and Masaki, a Quincy. His mixed lineage gave him spiritual power unlike that of ordinary people from birth. Masaki later died protecting the young Ichigo from a Hollow, an event that shaped his protective instincts. 90 243
For much of his life, Ichigo did not know his Soul Reaper, Quincy, or Shiba-family heritage. Yoruichi eventually reveals that Isshin lost his Soul Reaper powers while saving Masaki from Aizen’s scheme, and that Ichigo is related to Kukaku, Kaien, and Ganju Shiba. 243
Appearance
Ichigo is a teenage boy with messy orange hair. In combat, he wears a black Shihakushō and carries an exceptionally large, cleaver-like Zanpakutō. 118 214
- Messy orange hair.
- Broad, oversized Zanpakutō associated with his high spiritual power. 118
- Black Soul Reaper uniform while using his Soul Reaper powers. 118 214
- Carries Heaven Chain Zangetsu after attaining Bankai. 125
Personality
Ichigo is hot-tempered, blunt, and highly competitive, especially with Uryū Ishida. Their disagreements can escalate even during Hollow hunts, though Ichigo’s concern for Ishida’s safety remains clear. 214
His strongest trait is his refusal to abandon people in danger. He commits himself to saving Rukia despite the overwhelming strength of the Seireitei, and he accepts harsh training when Kisuke makes clear that reckless action would only get him killed. 94 104
Though initially impulsive, Ichigo learns to value preparation and emotional control. He argues that people should learn from past mistakes without allowing them to lose sight of present happiness, and he repeatedly chooses to fight alongside his companions rather than leave them behind. 93 132
Abilities & Skills
Zangetsu
Ichigo’s Zanpakutō, Zangetsu, is permanently in its released state. Its immense size reflects Ichigo’s unusually large spiritual power, though he initially lacks control over both his Reiatsu and his blade. 118 133
- Can manifest as a separate opponent through the Tenshintai. 88 133
- Forces Ichigo to confront his own instincts, combat style, and identity. 88

- Is later subdued by Ichigo during the Zanpakutō Rebellion. 272

- Allows him to reach Sōkyoku Hill in time to rescue Rukia. 125
- Its power is restored by the time of the Bount conflict. 132
Getsuga Tenshō
Ichigo can release a crescent-shaped Reishi attack from Zangetsu. 214
- Used against Menos Grande-class Hollows. 214
- Functions as a long-range extension of his sword strikes. 214
Spiritual Pressure and Combat Adaptation
Ichigo possesses exceptionally high Reiatsu, capable of sudden growth under extreme pressure. His battle with Renji produces a drastic increase in speed, power, and pain tolerance. 105
- Rapidly adapts to an opponent’s timing and blade speed. 88
- Learns to cushion incoming strikes and immediately counterattack. 88
- Can continue fighting despite severe injuries and exhaustion. 88 102

- Begins training under the Visoreds to control Hollowfication. 243 245
- Works to extend the duration for which he can maintain the form. 245
- Remains an unstable and emotionally difficult power for him to accept. 243 249
