Origin and Nature

Evil Beasts are born from negative emotions, and their individual powers are tied to the emotions that created them. Rust states that this origin determines an Evil Beast's abilities; Lion Cadre identifies himself as the resentment of a zoo lion that starved to death, while Sage's essence is described as human rejection 46 133.

Their appearances are not fixed indicators of identity. Sage states that an Evil Beast's outward form is merely “decoration,” and several have concealed themselves in human bodies or possessed human hosts 123 133.

Most Evil Beasts possess an instinct to destroy and an ingrained hostility toward Magical Girls, whom they regard as mortal enemies 133 184. They also prey on humans for life force and magical power; the purity of children and the immense power of Magical Girls make them especially desirable targets 7 56.

Evil Beasts have no universal physical form. They may appear as beasts, humanoid monsters, shadows, black mist, or outwardly ordinary humans.

An Evil Beast's magic is highly individual. Their abilities may reflect the negative emotion behind their creation and can include physical enhancement, possession, force fields, mental pressure, gravity manipulation, ice, lightning traps, long-range attacks, and social manipulation 46 123 219 224.

Intelligent Evil Beasts can hide among humans, inhabit human identities, or enter a host as black mist.

Feeding and Life-Force Conversion

Evil Beasts consume humans, life energy, and magical power to survive or grow stronger. Code-named Evil Beasts can use conversion formations that annihilate living beings within their range and turn their lives into magical energy 7 56 67.

Residual magic may remain after an Evil Beast is destroyed. Lu Ming has absorbed the remnants of Wendigo, Rust, and One-Eye, an ability that alarms Evil Beasts because even the Empress cannot normally absorb their power 25 46 169.

Emergence Patterns

Tang Zhiqing identifies three principal ways Evil Beasts appear:

1. They are summoned by evil organizations to attack humans.

• Death Spiral — An Evil Beast organization led by Sage. Its members attempted to use Haiyang as nourishment, employing a huge conversion formation to drain human life force and restore Sage's strength 46 67 133.
• Rabbit Bone — A major danger-level organization that has grown stronger while Death Spiral declined. Its Code-named members gathered in Haiyang to exploit Sage's legacy, draw in weaker Evil Beasts, seek the Divinely Blessed Land, and destroy local Magical Girls 165 181 218.
• The Witch — An exceptionally powerful independent Evil Beast who belongs to neither the Magical Girls nor ordinary Evil Beast factions. She destroys other Evil Beasts, refuses to eat ordinary humans, and is believed to have been born from the negative emotions of Magical Girls worldwide 172 177 184 222.

• Early Haiyang attacks — Death Spiral deploys Evil Beasts to hunt Lu Ming after identifying him as a Star Bearer. Lu Ming unexpectedly commands one attacking Evil Beast to stop, revealing an abnormal connection between him and their kind 7 17 18.
• Death Spiral conflict — Rust and Lion Cadre attack Haiyang while advancing their leader's plan. Rust is destroyed by Lu Ming, while Lion Cadre's warning exposes Sage's intended evolution through the city's life force 41 46.
