"You... deserve to die."
The chilling voice came from a corpse on the ground, as though it had risen from the depths of hell.
"Even if you sound ten times more sinister, I'm not going to die."
The speaking corpse was Charlotte Carl. She was still alive, and she had taken on a form that looked like a cross between a lizard and a human. She apparently had a Zoan Devil Fruit.
Werther had wondered why she had covered for her subordinates while they fled without hesitation.
Now it made sense. This wasn't their first time. When they met an enemy they couldn't beat, Charlotte Carl held them off while her subordinates escaped. Then she pretended to die in battle and escaped herself.
Unfortunately, none of the five understood the importance of acting. Charlotte Carl had delivered her line so naturally that she sounded fiercely loyal, but her subordinates had retreated just as naturally.
That was the problem. If they were truly brothers-in-arms, shouldn't they have at least shouted something like "Boss, you go first"? Instead, they had simply fled. It was far too jarring.
Werther looked at the severed head speaking to him and felt his mouth twitch.
In some ways, Charlotte Carl was even tougher than Kaido. Kaido certainly couldn't hold a conversation after losing his head.
Blue Light flashed, and Werther hacked Charlotte Carl's headless body to pieces as it rose.
"Hmph. You can't kill me. Even Akainu's magma couldn't do it."
Werther drove Intent Blood into Charlotte Carl's head. As she screamed, he stared at her in surprise.
Intent Blood hadn't absorbed even a trace of life force. That had never happened before.
"Think those two Cursed Swords can kill me? I'm already half-dead. Swords that drain life force won't do a thing to me."
Werther
