Background / History

Werther originally lived in another world, where he spent six years working aboard a ship. During an encounter with a colossal golden carp and a silver-blue lightning vortex, his body was destroyed and his soul was left fragmented. He entered the consciousness of a starving boy, fought the child’s soul, and consumed it to restore himself before taking over the body and inheriting fragments of its memories. 1 2

He awakened near Loguetown in the body of a starving child around eight or nine years old. Rather than follow the body’s dream of becoming a pirate, Werther chose to become an adventurer free from both pirates and Marines. He survived through theft, deception, and technical skill, convincing the ship-parts merchant Red to employ and house him. 2

Werther joined Sword Intent Hall to build a practical foundation in swordsmanship. Under Rom Roy’s harsh instruction and Yadu Nisse’s guidance, he trained his body, learned dual-wielding, and developed his lightning-based abilities. Nisse later revealed his true name, Longliang, formally accepted Werther as his true disciple, and prepared him for survival training on Arabella Island. 6 8 10

On Arabella, Werther fought wild beasts, learned to endure bloodshed, built his own shelter, and created Secret Sword: Tsubame Gaeshi. Returning to Loguetown at thirteen, he joined Longliang’s hidden underworld assassination organization out of curiosity about killing humans. 11 12 13

Years of assassination work made Werther increasingly detached from killing. He reached the Steel Cutting stage, but lost Longliang, Roy, and An during the Sword Hall’s conflict with the Stuart family. He buried them together, burned the Sword Hall, and left Loguetown to continue as an adventurer. 16 18 19

Appearance

Werther first appears as a small, ordinary-looking child with short black hair, black eyes, and a fair complexion. At thirteen, he is approximately 1.4 meters tall with a lean build and smooth muscle definition that belies his physical strength. 2 14

  • Usually wears predominantly black clothing, including a high-collared coat, black trousers, and black shoes. 11
  • Wears three layered belts at his waist to carry his twin swords. 11
  • His white undershirt and pale complexion contrast with his otherwise dark attire. 11
  • His unsettling “Hehehe” laugh gives others the impression that he is dangerous or unstable. 2
  • Often fights bare-chested to avoid blood-soaked clothing restricting his movement. 24

Personality

Werther is pragmatic, observant, and intensely self-reliant. After reincarnating weak and starving, he prioritizes food, shelter, employment, training resources, and useful knowledge over dramatic ambitions. He repeatedly uses deception, bargaining, and technical expertise to secure what he needs. 2 4

He is deeply driven by freedom, exploration, fine food, and the opportunity to fight powerful opponents. Although he rejects the goals of becoming Pirate King or ruling the world, he openly recognizes a battle-loving side of himself and becomes exhilarated by lethal combat. 7 12

His years as an assassin severely erode his aversion to violence. Werther eventually describes killing as bringing him neither pleasure nor guilt, while maintaining that he enjoys fighting itself. He can be cruel, psychologically manipulative, and casually threatening, particularly toward enemies or people obstructing him. 16 39 43

Despite this brutality, Werther is capable of loyalty and selective compassion. He mourns his Sword Hall family, honors a dying girl’s wish to be buried with her parents, refuses to truly sell Catarina into slavery, and protects people who have shown him genuine kindness. 16 19 21 39

Abilities & Skills

Thunder Core

Werther possesses a unique internal source of lightning energy, which he believes originated when the lightning vortex altered his soul before reincarnation. It is not a Devil Fruit ability: seawater does not weaken him, and he cannot transform into lightning. 7

  • Produces pale-blue lightning through conscious control. 7
  • Strengthens alongside his physical condition and long-term training. 10 32
  • Can electrocute ordinary people and heat objects to extreme temperatures. 18
  • Becomes dangerous to Werther himself when intensified beyond his body’s limits. 9

Lightning Stimulation Method

Werther circulates restrained lightning through his body to recover from fatigue and accelerate physical development. 7

  • Low-intensity circulation can be maintained almost continuously with minimal stamina cost. 7
  • Improves training efficiency from more than threefold to fourfold, then fivefold through Lightning Thorn. 8 9 13
  • Greatly improves recovery, durability, and resistance to infection. 11 32
  • Excessive cellular stimulation causes crippling pain, muscle spasms, and unconsciousness. 9

Lightning Mode

Lightning Mode reinforces Werther’s muscles and bones, dramatically improving speed, reflexes, strength, and stamina. 9

  • Initially doubles his speed and reaction time while increasing strength and stamina by roughly half. 9
  • Can be channeled through his swords to enhance their sharpness and cutting power. 9
  • Allows high-speed movement, sudden directional changes, and extreme close-range pressure. 24 38
  • Maximum output causes severe pain, exhaustion, and physical strain. 24 25

Dual-Sword Swordsmanship

Werther chose dual-wielding despite Roy’s warning that two blades reduce the force of each individual strike. He developed his own style around overwhelming speed, rapid slashes, and lightning-enhanced cutting power. 8 12

  • Reached Cutting Steel by sensing the “breathing” of objects. 16
  • Reached the fourth swordsmanship stage, allowing him to cut rare substances harder than steel. 35
  • Projects extremely fast, highly destructive sword aura capable of cutting trees, rock, and earth. 35
  • His swordsmanship is more specialized than Vice Admiral Onigumo’s versatile but broadly balanced fighting style. 38

Secret Sword: Tsubame Gaeshi

Werther’s signature sword technique combines brief maximum-intensity Lightning Mode with simultaneous dual-blade slashes. 12

  • Produces intersecting sword trails or sword energies that strike at extreme speed. 12 15
  • Its stronger variation, Swallow Reversal, creates four intersecting slashes. 24
  • Can decisively overpower powerful opponents, including Gat’s awakened Lion Form. 24
  • Leaves Werther temporarily weakened after use, making repeated activation dangerous. 15

Electromagnetic Techniques

Werther applies lightning’s electromagnetic properties to both movement and weapon control. 24

  • Throws lightning-charged swords as spinning sword wheels. 24 29
  • Recalls thrown swords with electromagnetic force. 24
  • Uses Electromagnetic Cannon, a lightning- and Armament Haki-coated kick with enormous destructive power. 35 38
  • Electromagnetic movement can become hazardous in metal-heavy environments, as shown when he crashed into a wall while recalling his swords. 29

Haki

Werther obtained Haki training materials through an auction and later discovered superior methods within Black Iron Rock Island’s ruins. 24 34

  • Armament Haki — His strongest Haki discipline; by the end of his two-year training, he considers himself capable of competing with most opponents short of exceptional masters. 35
  • Observation Haki — Possesses danger perception and has trained the ability, but considers himself poorly talented in it. 15 35
  • Conqueror’s Haki — Has not pursued it, believing that recognizing his limits is one of his strengths. 35

Shipbuilding and Survival

Werther possesses practical knowledge of ship components, machinery, wilderness survival, cooking, and field medicine. 2 10 11

  • Earned employment from Red by manufacturing ship components. 2
  • Built a functioning shelter, furniture, storage equipment, and defenses while stranded on Arabella Island. 11
  • Treats his own wounds and carries basic medical supplies. 11
  • Studies ancient writing, Haki methods, swordsmanship theory, and medical texts. 22 32 34

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Twin swords — Werther’s long-used custom blades, forged to channel lightning. They accompanied him from his early training through his fight with Onigumo, who ultimately cut both swords in half. 9 38
  • Blood Scorpion — A Fifty Ryo Wazamono formerly wielded by An. Its uneven blade causes exceptional pain to anyone it cuts; Werther later gave it to Tashigi in accordance with Roy’s final wish. 14 20
  • Electrical ship — A compact Adam Wood vessel powered by batteries and electric propellers. It can only be activated by supplying the precise electrical energy known to Werther. 19 23 42
  • Xun — A wind instrument Werther crafted from Adam wood and played at Longliang, Roy, and An’s graves. 19
  • Rare red metal — An exceptionally durable unrefined metal recovered from beneath Fish-Man Island, intended as the primary material for new swords. 41 42
  • Haki and swordsmanship records — Includes an auction-bought Haki notebook and copied writings from Black Iron Rock Island’s forbidden ruins. 24 34

Relationships

  • Longliang / Yadu Nisse — Werther’s true master and the founder of Sword Hall. Longliang accepted him as his fifth and final disciple, entrusted him with his mission, and remained a central influence after his death. 10 18 35
  • Rom Roy — Senior martial brother, early instructor, intelligence-selling partner, and drinking companion. Their relationship was marked by constant insults, harsh training, and genuine brotherly loyalty until Roy’s death. 6 13 18
  • Olivia An — Senior sister and Roy’s wife. An taught Werther torture and interrogation methods; both shared an unsettling comfort with cruelty before her death in the Stuart conflict. 9 16 18
  • Rabbit — Werther’s closest companion and frequent training partner. Rabbit saved him on Black Iron Rock Island, led him to ancient ruins, and later comforted him after the loss of his swords. 31 32 38
  • Ferdinand — Merchant, intelligence partner, and supplier of rare materials. Werther distrusts and intimidates him, but the two maintain a mutually useful alliance. 29 39 41
  • CatarinaFerdinand’s sister and Werther’s combat ally against Garde. She openly criticizes Werther’s behavior and remains wary of his threats. 29 41
  • Tashigi — Marine swordswoman chosen by Werther as Blood Scorpion’s new owner because of her devotion to swords. 20
  • Capone Bege — Defeated enemy whom Werther spared after recognizing his courage, leaving him with a cross-shaped chest scar and an invitation to return stronger. 45
  • Red — Ship-parts merchant who gave Werther his first stable job and lodging after his reincarnation. 2
