Loa rubbed his chin, in no hurry to point out the holes in that story. "But leaving aside how you knew there were still souls in dead bodies, if all you wanted was to help her recover, aren't there plenty of living people here?"
Loa meant the surviving residents of Whole Cake Island. They far outnumbered the Undead Soldiers who had disappeared lately. If Katakuri needed that much soul energy, couldn't he simply kill them?
Katakuri was no saint. For Charlotte Linlin's sake, Loa had no doubt he could feed everyone else to her without batting an eye.
"I took Mom out for a walk," Katakuri said calmly. "She suddenly pointed at an island full of Zombies and burst into tears, like a child crying over a toy she couldn't have. So I brought back a few things from that island, including several Zombies..."

Loa nodded. The Undead in World of Warcraft were different from the Zombies in Resident Evil. The latter were nothing but walking corpses, empty shells driven by a virus. The former were true Undead, with souls of their own.
Thanks to Caesar and Crocodile, those souls had been shattered, and the people turned into Zombies had lost their reason. Even so, fragments of human souls did remain inside them. Otherwise, those soldiers who had nearly earned themselves a raise would never have been able to lure them with the scent of souls.
It was the nature of a soul. Instinct!
It sought anything that could make it whole again, so it could fill itself out and be reborn through Nirvana...
