Ch. 901Four to Choose From
Key plot points and events
- While Stone and White Crane remain aboard to guard the ship, the others go ashore. Nami and Robin attract attention with their unusual clothing, then head off to shop.
- The island’s Demon Gate community shares labor, property, food, and housing. Members can eat freely at communal restaurants, and the elderly and children are given special consideration. Outsiders, however, must pay and appear wary of the Gate’s followers.
- Ye Chen and Kuina explore together, while Zoro heads straight to a tavern. Kuina is preoccupied with Haki: she has awakened Observation Haki but is frustrated that she cannot master Armament Haki.
- In a town square, Ye Chen and Kuina witness the Demon Gate overseeing a young woman’s marriage choice. Donna, who is around seventeen or eighteen, is expected to pick one of four much older or otherwise unsuitable men. She and her parents are distressed, while the prospective husbands boast about their status and how many women they already have.
- Ye Chen grows angry at the coercive arrangement.
Character developments
- Ye Chen approves of the community’s generosity toward members, especially its care for the elderly and children, but becomes sharply critical when its marriage customs deny Donna meaningful choice.
- Kuina remains intensely focused on swordsmanship and Haki, barely noticing the town around her. Her difficulty with Armament Haki highlights her drive to improve.
- Nami enjoys the attention her appearance draws; Robin quietly observes the island and its customs with an archaeologist’s curiosity.
- Zoro follows his usual solitary instincts and seeks out a tavern.
- Donna and her parents appear trapped and unhappy under the Demon Gate’s rules.
Significant themes
- Equality and its limits: The Demon Gate provides shared resources and social support, but its communal system also extends into deeply personal choices.
- Freedom versus authority: Donna’s forced “choice” exposes the coercive side of a society that otherwise seems orderly and generous.
- Contradictions in social ideals: Material equality and care for vulnerable people coexist with gender inequality and control over marriage.
Character interactions
- Ye Chen gently tries to draw Kuina’s attention to shopping, but she explains that her thoughts are fixed on Haki.
- Ye Chen questions a restaurant server about free meals and learns that the benefit is reserved for Demon Gate members.
- At the square, the men compete to persuade Donna by boasting about their rank, property, age, or other wives. Donna’s distress and her parents’ silence contrast with their self-satisfaction, prompting Ye Chen’s anger.
