Nature and Role

Blood Qi is the foundation of early Martial Dao cultivation. Practitioners stimulate and strengthen it to temper their bodies, eventually breaking through into External Force; it also remains connected to the later Hidden Force stage 5.

The Martial Dao hierarchy described at the Huang Family Martial Hall is:

The Huang Family Martial Hall's Entrance Stake Method is specifically centered on Blood Qi circulation. Its mnemonic formula regulates breathing, stimulates vitality and blood, and exposes a practitioner's potential through painful, unnatural movements 7 8.

Ordinary Blood Qi potential is described as something gradually developed and awakened through cultivation methods rather than something that begins with fully realized Hidden Force potential. Lin suspects that his own Blood Qi falls outside this conventional understanding, but its exact origin and ultimate potential remain unknown 5.

Lin's abnormal Blood Qi should be distinguished from the vital energy used by martial practitioners generally. Its extraordinary absorption, recovery, purification, medicinal enhancement, and Void connection do not automatically raise his cultivation realm or transform his Root Bone into that of a prodigy. Its advantages instead support cultivation, strengthen his foundation, and allow combat performance beyond what his realm alone would suggest 21 28 39 42 47 48.

Blood Qi also functions as a reserve of nourishment. Healing and other demanding uses consume what Lin has stored, while food, medicinal preparations, and the mysterious Void connection replenish or supplement it. By Chapter 70, Lin identifies assimilated and transformed Void substances as the key component responsible for his medicinal upgrades 22 45 51 70.

Manifestations

Lin Xiaotian's Blood Qi can produce visible radiance during intense activation, absorption, or depletion, although some of its movements and connections are perceptible only to him.

• A faint bloody glow surrounds Lin while it absorbs Rift Mist; this glow is expelled waste blood and foul air rather than a protective barrier itself 1.
• During healing, blood-red light reappears as the Blood Qi absorbs mist and repairs his body 2.
• When forced to erupt against the seductive sister's influence, it manifests behind Lin as a chilling crimson “long river of blood” 17.
• While the Secret-Treasure Array Pattern drains him, thin blood-red strands flow from his body into the formation 18.
• During Bone Tempering practice, a faint layer of Blood Qi surfaces on his skin, giving his figure a hazy appearance 28.
• Rapid medicinal aura absorption produces increasingly conspicuous bloody radiance. His Blood Tempering breakthrough creates an outward shockwave and a disturbance that the Ouyang practitioners mistake for medicinal stimulation or overdrawing his Blood Qi 39.
• Bison Force channels Blood Qi into a membrane of force around his body; its later improvement is more pronounced in inward tempering than in the membrane's defensive strength 68.
• Pills being nurtured appear covered in a blood-red veil of mist 70.
• Lin perceives Nianci's circulating Blood Qi as rising tongues of flame and can sense an invisible connection between hers and his own; this particular radiance is invisible to others 70.

Background / History

Lin Xiaotian first discovers his abnormal Blood Qi after being thrown into a fissure filled with corrosive mist. Rather than dissolving him, the Blood Qi circulates like “rivers and seas,” pulls in the mist, and leaves his body intact while expelling impurities 1.

Its first clear ability is restoration. After Lin suffers serious injuries falling while attempting to escape the fissure, his Blood Qi absorbs more mist and heals the damage. He realizes, however, that the ability depends on the presence of Rift Mist for rapid recovery and should not be treated as permission to act recklessly 2.

Once Lin begins training at the Huang Family Martial Hall, the Blood Qi compensates for his lower-middle martial aptitude. It eases pressure on his joints during the Stake Skill, repairs strained muscles, and allows him to complete the stake trial by moving slowly enough for his injuries to recover between forms 9 10.

Song Wanyan's divided personas later reveal that Lin's Blood Qi is valuable enough to be cultivated and harvested. The seductive persona uses black mist and a prepared formation to stimulate it, intending to drain Lin's essence and blood to repair herself and consume Song's original consciousness 17 18.

The original Song Wanyan escapes with the possessing entity through a Teleportation Talisman, but the Secret-Treasure Array Pattern remains active. After draining Lin's Blood Qi, the array rises and crashes into his body. This event changes the Blood Qi and grants it the ability to nourish and improve medicinal pills 18 19.

After reaching Skin Tempering, Lin secretly heals injuries inflicted by Qin Yueyao and faces renewed hunger from the expenditure. Master Huang subsequently probes his body, recognizes the apparently bottomless capacity beneath his ordinary-looking Blood Qi, and secretly increases his daily medicinal broth allowance. Lin successfully upgrades the broth in a small gourd, turning the additional nourishment into a means of strengthening his foundation 21 22 23.

Repeated enhancement and consumption of medicines help Lin reach Bone Tempering, but further pills initially increase his Blood Qi reserves rather than advance his realm. This exposes the continuing limitation of his ordinary Root Bone. Meanwhile, Lin becomes puzzled because the medicinal effects produced by nourishment greatly exceed the apparent energy he expends 27 28 32.

During the Ouyang mine expedition, Master Huang reveals that observing Lin's unusual Blood Qi inspired his comprehension of Blood-Qi Resonance. He teaches the technique to Lin, who refines it against wild beasts and learns to transmit its penetrating force through a blade. In the medicinal field, Lin absorbs the herbs' aura to repair weaknesses left beneath previously healed injuries, then releases his suppressed breakthrough into Blood Tempering 34 35 38 39.

Intimacy with Ouyang Nianci strengthens Lin's Blood Qi and allows him to perceive an additional source of energy extending into a boundless realm beyond time and space. At the Xiao Household, he investigates this connection further, discovering scorching energy and a need for yin energy to harmonize his Blood Qi. Attempting to probe its mysterious root with his consciousness nearly burns that consciousness away and leaves him recovering for three days 45 47.

The Xiao Household's Gale Step and Bison Force reveal another application: his Blood Qi draws special substances from the Void to overcome the techniques' acclimation requirements and improve their practical effects. Its combination with Blood-Qi Resonance subsequently enables him to challenge External Force opponents despite remaining at Blood Tempering 48 57 67.

His relationship with Nianci also demonstrates that the unusual Blood Qi can benefit another person. Their mingled Blood Qi strengthens her and raises her Martial Dao potential. After she burns her blood and qi in a fight with Second Uncle, renewed intimacy further purifies Lin's Blood Qi, and subsequent pill treatment helps restore her weakened foundation. During this treatment, Lin finally identifies transformed Void substances as the mechanism behind his medicinal enhancement 64 66 67 68 70.

Abilities & Properties

Rift Mist Absorption

Blood Qi can draw in and process the corrosive mist found in the fissure.

• Absorbs Rift Mist through each circulation of Blood Qi 1.
• Expels absorbed impurities as waste blood and foul air, producing a blood-red glow around Lin 1.
• Initially reaches a limit: Lin senses that it wants to absorb more, but his ordinary body cannot contain further intake 2.

Blood Qi repairs Lin's damaged body and supports his recovery from harsh training.

Blood-Qi Resonance

Blood-Qi Resonance is a learned application of Blood Qi rather than an automatically acquired property of Lin's abnormal energy. Master Huang comprehends it through observing Lin and subsequently teaches it to him 34.

• Amplifies attack power and adds penetrating force capable of striking deeper into a target 34.
• Can be transmitted through fists and palms, then through weapons after additional practice 34 35.
• In the medicinal field, force travels through Lin's blade into a beast and detonates internally, turning a superficial cut into a fatal attack 39.
• Can also reinforce movement. Lin estimates that adding it to his enhanced Gale Step provides at least another ten percent improvement, and later uses it to accelerate his departure from the Xiao Household 48 56.

Interaction with Ouyang Nianci reveals that Lin's Blood Qi can affect another person's cultivation as well as his own.

Costs and Limitations

• Blood Qi requires large quantities of food, medicinal soup, and pills to replenish Lin's growing energy needs 14 19.
• Healing is initially much more effective when Rift Mist is available; without it, serious injuries cannot be repaired immediately. Later accumulation of supreme-grade medicinal power greatly improves recovery speed 2 9 32.
• Using Blood Qi for healing, pill nourishment, or formation interaction drains Lin's qi and blood. The later discovery of its Void connection reveals an additional energy source rather than proving that the ability creates energy from nothing 19 45 70.
• Its extraordinary nature must remain concealed. Lin considers it a secret dangerous enough to bring disaster if discovered 19.
• It cannot overcome overwhelming differences in direct combat power; during the seductive sister's attack, it preserves Lin's mind but cannot free him from the formation or stop the draining process on its own 18.
• Blood Qi reserves are finite in practice. Repeated injuries and healing consume stored nourishment, including during the coordinated Xiao Household arena assault 22 51.
• Ordinary Root Bone remains a realm-progression limitation. At Bone Tempering, further enhanced pills initially increase his reserves instead of advancing him into Blood Tempering 28 32.
• Healing takes time. Sustained damage can accumulate faster than recovery, and attacks strong enough to cripple or kill him immediately remain dangerous 39 45.
• At Blood Tempering, Lin's raw physical strength initially remains below that of External Force practitioners. Abnormal recovery, improved techniques, and Blood-Qi Resonance allow him to contend with them but do not erase the realm gap 42 47 57.
• Prolonged or consecutive battles against stronger External Force opponents can consume enough Blood Qi to endanger his life. Lin's early hopes of defeating Internal Force through trickery are explicitly recognized as wishful thinking 45 47.
• Probing the mysterious Void root with his consciousness causes severe burning pain and nearly destroys that consciousness. Healing medicine and approximately three days of recovery are required 47.
• It cannot directly rewrite or upgrade martial manuals, even though it can improve technique performance through bodily adaptation and attribute absorption 48.
• Its need for yin–yang balance and its stimulation of desire can complicate Lin's judgment, relationships, and attempts to help others 47 53 64 66.
• Burning blood and qi is a separate, hazardous means of temporarily increasing power. Nianci's use of the Bloodburst Pill risks consuming her foundation and potential so severely that recovery could take long enough to be effectively permanent 66 67.
• Uncle Ming suspects that Lin's extraordinary progress may be exhausting his health or potential, but the narrative does not establish that this suspicion correctly explains Lin's unusual Blood Qi 56.
