Background / History

Song Wanyan took in Lin Xiaotian more than a month before the story begins because he resembled the younger brother from whom she had long been separated. When Lin returns to Long River Town after surviving the mist-filled rift, she receives him warmly, prepares food and a bath, and supports his wish to pursue Martial Dao despite the cost. 3

Behind this domestic façade, Song's body contains at least two opposing wills: a cold, spiritual self concerned with Lin's safety and a seductive demonic self interested in the extraordinary potential within him. Their powers produce a mysterious map-like pattern and later a hidden formation inside Lin's home. 4 5

The demonic persona engineers pressure around Lin to stimulate his Blood Qi, including using the Qin Household to make him fear for Song's safety. It ultimately intends to drain Lin's essence and blood to recover from its injuries and consume Song's original self. 16 17

Song's spiritual self warns Lin that she may someday “swallow [him] alive” and that ordinary Martial Dao cannot resolve her condition. She seals his memories after the warning, apparently to protect him, but his Blood Qi breaks the seal and restores his recollection. 14

When the demonic persona begins refining Lin through the Secret-Treasure Array Pattern, Song's spiritual self reveals that she had conserved her strength. She takes control, uses a Teleportation Talisman to escape with the demonic presence, and tells Lin that he may be able to rescue her after reaching Hidden Force. 18

Her apparent local history subsequently becomes suspect. Master Huang had already described his memories of Song, supposedly a girl who grew up in town, as hazy. Qin Yueyao later reports that her investigation outside Long River Town suggests Song's parents never existed, despite everyone in town knowing of them. Lin connects this discrepancy to Song's demonstrated memory-sealing ability and considers the possibility of town-wide memory alteration. 11 21 22

After Song's departure, Master Huang and the town's Lineages begin noticing blurred memories and inconsistencies in their longstanding fear of her supposed parents. Lin concludes that fabricated memories associated with Song are weakening in her absence. This loss of deterrence contributes to the Ouyang Household's willingness to pressure him and move against the Qin Household. 26 30 32

Her demonic counterpart is manipulative, predatory, and cruelly playful. It views Lin primarily as a source of Blood Qi, exploits Qin Ziyu's desire and fear, and intends to use Lin's blood to restore itself and destroy Song's spiritual self. 13 17 18

The original self's motives are not presented as entirely free of self-interest. The demonic persona accuses her of wanting to consume Lin while also helping him escape, and claims that she deliberately used the Qin Household situation to intensify his emotions and obtain nourishment from his Blood Qi. Lin later recognizes that both personas appear to need his Blood Qi, but remains willing to repay his normal sister's kindness and help her if their needs can be reconciled. 15 17 20

Song's spiritual self also expresses attachment to ordinary life in Long River Town. After warning Lin to leave, she walks slowly through the streets, admiring their bustle as though trying to preserve the scene in her memory before the demonic persona takes over. 15
