Background

The Xiao Clan declined after the death of Xiao Lin, formerly one of the Jia Ma Empire's ten great Dou Wang experts. The clan subsequently left the Imperial Capital for Wu Tan City, where it retained a large number of disciples but lacked the resources and standing it once possessed. 2

Its marriage agreement with the Nalan Clan became a crucial political safeguard. The Nalan Clan's prestige deterred Wu Tan City's Oba and Jia Lie Clans from provoking the Xiao Clan, while also strengthening Xiao Zhan's position as clan leader. 4 16

Nalan Chenfeng's first stay

Nalan Chenfeng arrives as a Nalan Clan representative and guest, reinforcing the relationship between the two families. During the annual test, Xiao Yan is celebrated as the clan's five-year-old genius after reaching the Second Stage of Dou Qi, while Xiao Yu and Xiao Ning also demonstrate their cultivation. 2 3

Chenfeng's presence provides immediate political protection: the Oba and Jia Lie Clans avoid provoking the Xiao Clan while he remains in Wu Tan City. 4

Xiao Yan's rise and public defeat

At nine, Xiao Yan reaches Seven-Stage Dou Qi and becomes the center of the younger generation's admiration. The marriage alliance is openly regarded as beneficial to both Xiao Yan and the Xiao Clan. 15

Chenfeng later defeats Xiao Yan in a public spar and reveals himself as a ten-year-old Dou Zhe. The Xiao Clan elders conclude that the Nalan connection makes Xiao Zhan's leadership more difficult to challenge. 16
