A familiar face appeared in the mirror.
It was Yin Ge's face, no mistake about it.
But her left eye was glowing red, the bloodshot veins inside writhing madly. If one did not look closely, one might have thought they were some kind of blood-feeding worms.
Even more terrifyingly, her gaze seemed stuck to the mirror, desperately Peeping through it for all kinds of information.
Yin Ge used all her strength to tear her eyes away from the mirror. The writhing red veins scrambled back into her eyeball, and the agony was as though needles had pierced it.
Under the dim yellow light, Yin Ge collapsed helplessly onto the floor, gasping for breath. The tearing pain in her left eye left her drenched in sweat.
[Breaking news: On the night of December 9th, a Bride fell to her death in the city's Youth Road Residential Complex...]
The phone video continued looping through the room as Yin Ge struggled to look toward the phone on the floor.
"It's December 10th, 12:10 a.m. Has it only been ten minutes?"
She turned to look out the window. The sky was pitch-black, while the pain in her eye surged ever more violently like waves.
At last, she could no longer withstand the pain. Everything before her blurred again, and she gradually lost consciousness.
"Beep, beep, beep..."
The sounds of medical equipment woke Yin Ge from her slumber.
She slowly opened her eyes, only to find herself not in her own room, but in a hospital ward.
"You're awake!" A strong, resonant voice rang out.
Yin Ge turned her head and saw a tall, steady-looking man in uniform staring at her.
She pushed herself up from the hospital bed and instinctively rubbed her eyes.
The tall man poured a glass of water and handed it to Yin Ge.
"Thank you." Yin Ge set the water aside, then asked warily, "Where is this? Who are you?"
"This is the Neutrino Persona Order Center. My name is Qin Li. You were involved in a scientific case, and I'm here to learn about what happened." Qin Li explained patiently.
A scientific incident... the Neutrino Persona Order Center... Yin Ge pondered silently.
She knew Qin Li was referring to the Son of Heaven Game, but she could not make sense of what the Neutrino Persona Order Center meant.
Seeing the caution on Yin Ge's face, Qin Li snapped his fingers.
One of the ward's walls instantly broke apart into countless blue blocks. It seemed to be some sort of technology, and many different voices came from within those blocks.
"Hell, it was practically hell! I obtained a Commoner Divinity, but some idiot with a Son of Heaven Godhead falsely accused me of being the Killer."
"The Bride, the Bride was killed by her younger brother. I-I don't know how the game ended either. We obviously identified the wrong person back then."
"[Court Minister]... The person with the [Court Minister] Godhead saved us."
Although Yin Ge did not recognize any of those voices, judging from what they said, they were undoubtedly her neighbors.
"They're... still alive?" Yin Ge asked.
With a wave of Qin Li's hand, the blue blocks broke apart and reassembled, returning to their former shape as a wall. "It seems you don't know much about the Son of Heaven Game."
"In the Son of Heaven Game, the side with Godheads is called the Daylight Faction, while the side with Beasthood is called the Night Faction."
"If the Daylight Faction wins, everyone in that faction survives. The same goes for the other side."
"The Daylight Faction and the Night Faction?" Yin Ge narrowed her eyes slightly. "Are they named that because those with Godheads identify the Killer during the day, while the Killer—well, those with Beasthood—act at night?"
"Correct." Qin Li smiled faintly. "You're very smart. No wonder you managed to escape your very first Son of Heaven Game."
Yin Ge shook her head. "I only wanted to stay alive. Participating in the game was not my choice."
Yin Ge had no interest in the Daylight Faction or the Night Faction.
As for those so-called Godheads, Personhood, and Beasthood, Yin Ge vaguely felt there was some philosophical meaning behind them.
Yin Ge did not want to know.
But... was that possible?
She had no idea what was hidden inside her eye now. It seemed to have been brought out of the Son of Heaven Game.
She needed to learn enough information!
And since the Son of Heaven Game had descended upon her once, could it descend upon her a second time?
Walking the line between life and death did not feel good at all.
The man before her clearly knew something, and that Neutrino research institute was obviously a special organization.
Perhaps it knew and understood many things.
The best course of action now was naturally to pry some information out of him... Having made up her mind, Yin Ge said:
"I'm willing to explain what I know, but can I receive some answers in return? I'm very confused as well."
"With pleasure." Qin Li sat down on the sofa opposite the hospital bed.
"Where did the Son of Heaven Game come from?" After pondering for a moment, Yin Ge asked a question that was not particularly related to her own situation.
Where did the Son of Heaven Game come from?
Qin Li froze for a moment, then smiled. "I thought you would ask about Godheads, Personhood, and Beasthood."
He shook his head and continued without hesitation, "The origin of the Son of Heaven Game is not actually important."
"Some say it is a state produced by quantum entanglement. Others say it is the result of quantum tunneling and quantum fluctuations overlapping."
"But regardless of which explanation is correct, the Son of Heaven Game is a scientifically material phenomenon beyond our understanding."
"A scientific phenomenon? Materialism?" Yin Ge asked. "Something like this has already appeared, yet you still call it science? Isn't this theology? Or idealism?"
Yin Ge did not actually know much. She was merely asking out of curiosity.
To her surprise, Qin Li's expression became more serious. "Anything that can be perceived and analyzed has nothing to do with theology or idealism."
"When gods appear before material science, material scientists view them about the same way they view monkeys. Well, if that god is extremely powerful, then it is an extremely powerful monkey."
"Even if that god can destroy the universe or create all things, it still falls within the realm of material science, within the realm of objective existence."
"Even if hell appears, heaven appears, or Sun Wukong appears, the gap between all of that and modern science is merely a matter of distance."
"Just as our ancestors two thousand years ago, who worshipped thunder and lightning as deities, could not understand the science of today."
Qin Li paused before continuing:
"For example, the Son of Heaven Game is like that. A group of religious lunatics regard it as a miracle, while our institute carries on the discoveries of our ancestors, studying this so-called 'miracle.' We are gradually analyzing it, learning from it, and attempting to crack it."
"Crack it..." Yin Ge fell into a long silence at his words.
It was shocking.
But it also made a great deal of sense.
After Qin Li put it that way, Yin Ge no longer found the Son of Heaven Game strange or bizarre. Instead, it seemed like a rare monkey waiting to be studied on an operating table.
Only after a long while did she speak again. "Then is there any pattern to the appearance of the Son of Heaven Game?"
Qin Li looked regretful. "A pattern? None has been discovered so far. Based on the current situation alone, the Son of Heaven Game appears randomly in different places, and it has been appearing more and more frequently lately."
Yin Ge fell silent for a moment, then asked, "Can the game be avoided in advance?"
"If the Son of Heaven Game descends upon an area, the best current method is to seal it off." Qin Li sighed. "Only when the Daylight Faction wins will the Son of Heaven Game disappear."
"If the Night Faction wins, the game will continue to exist and draw people from an even wider area into it."
"Therefore, sealing off the area and preventing others from entering is the best approach."
