Background and History
Saiyan invasion
Vegeta arrives with Nappa after Raditz’s death and displays no grief for their fallen comrade. Viewing Earth as a world to be conquered and sold, he orders the extermination of its human population. 6
After Nappa is defeated, Vegeta challenges Goku while dismissing him as a low-class Saiyan. Goku’s Kaioken overturns Vegeta’s assumptions about birth and strength, forcing him to use an Artificial Full Moon and become a Great Ape. 13 14
Son Wuling’s Mini Destructo Disc removes Vegeta’s tail and strips away his Great Ape form. Wuling defeats him, but Goku chooses to spare him; Vegeta leaves Earth swearing revenge on Goku and Wuling. 14
Namek conflict
Seeking immortality and freedom from Frieza, Vegeta travels to Namek after recovering from his defeat on Earth. He learns ki suppression but acknowledges that his foundation remains inferior to Goku’s and Wuling’s. 20
His Earth training raises his power beyond 24,000, allowing him to kill Cui and later Dodoria. However, the sudden growth of Piccolo, Gohan, Videl, Goku, and Wuling leaves him increasingly desperate and humiliated. 22 24 27 28
Frieza kills Vegeta after Vegeta exposes Goku as a possible Super Saiyan. Near death, Vegeta reveals that Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta out of fear of the Super Saiyan legend and asks Goku to avenge the Saiyans. 30 31
Life on Earth and the Cell crisis
Vegeta later resides among Earth’s defenders and becomes entangled in a rivalry with Videl, who seeks to surpass him after their fight on Namek. Their rematch ends without a decisive victor, though Vegeta becomes stronger during the battle. 45 52 54
After awakening Super Saiyan, Vegeta wagers that Son Wuling will lose their duel. Wuling defeats him with the World-Shaking Palm, and Vegeta is forced to honor the condition of dressing as a woman for a day. 57 58 59
During the Wuling Cell crisis, Vegeta joins Piccolo, Trunks, and Android 17 in pursuing Cell. Though shaken by the Evil Containment Wave, he refuses to withdraw and continues hunting Cell. 73 76
Divine training and later growth
Vegeta gradually becomes more cooperative with the group, helping decide that weaker fighters should remain away from Cell’s battlefield and training alongside Goku, Gohan, and Broly. 106 140
He reaches Super Saiyan 4, later trains under Whis, and begins destruction-focused Ultra Ego training with Beerus. Whis identifies Vegeta’s excessive tension and tendency to overthink as obstacles to Ultra Instinct. 141 184 257
Kusu’s later training exposes the instability of Vegeta’s foundation. Although he nearly loses control and recognizes that the supreme realm may be beyond him, he refuses to surrender and reaffirms his purpose as a protector of Bulma, Trunks, Bulla, and Earth. 271 272
Appearance
Vegeta is a compact Saiyan warrior with sharply upright black hair and a stern, handsome face. He is initially introduced in blue battle armor with white gloves and boots. 5
- Usually wears Saiyan battle armor or combat suits.
- Gains golden hair and aura as a Super Saiyan. 57
- His tail is permanently removed after his Great Ape battle on Earth. 14
- His Super Saiyan 4 Red form combines black fur with divine energy. 228
Personality
Vegeta is intensely prideful and measures himself against Goku, Wuling, Gohan, and later the younger generation. He initially believes Saiyan birth and status determine a warrior’s worth, making Goku’s growth and Videl’s resistance especially humiliating to him. 13 27 30
His pride does not make him cowardly. Even when completely outmatched by Seraph Gabriel, he continues attacking until he is knocked unconscious; when fusion becomes the only option, he accepts it despite his long-standing aversion to fusing with Goku. 317
Over time, his hostility softens into reluctant cooperation and protectiveness. He praises Gohan and Rose as exemplary children, warns Gohan about Android 21, and ultimately chooses his family and Earth as reasons to continue training rather than submit to despair. 160 272
Abilities & Skills
Ki Control and Energy Attacks
Vegeta learns to suppress his battle power after his first defeat on Earth, reducing the usefulness of Scouters against him. 20
- Galick Gun — his signature purple energy wave; used against Goku, Videl, Wuling Cell, and other opponents. 13 27 75
- Energy Blast / Prince’s Battle Style — rapid barrages of ki attacks. 27
- Energy Control Bullet — uses a controlled ki shot to deflect Videl’s Destructo Disc. 27
- Flight — used throughout his battles and travel. 13 14
Artificial Full Moon
Vegeta can generate an energy sphere containing Blutz Waves to force a Saiyan with a tail into Great Ape form.
- Requires 17-million-hertz Blutz Waves. 14
- Great Ape transformation multiplies battle power tenfold. 14
- Vegeta can no longer use this ability because his tail was permanently severed. 14
Saiyan Transformations
Vegeta’s later power growth centers on refining and combining Saiyan transformations rather than relying solely on raw battle power.
- Super Saiyan — a fiftyfold increase over base power. 57
- Super Saiyan 2 — attained before Bulla’s birth. 140
- Super Saiyan 4 — achieved through Ultra Instinct Domain training. 141
- Super Saiyan God — acquired during God Realm training under Whis. 184
- Super Saiyan 4 Red — Super Saiyan 4 empowered by divine energy. 228
Fusion Dance
After initially rejecting the Metamoran Fusion Dance as embarrassing, Vegeta eventually performs it successfully with Goku. 128 156
- Gogeta — formed with Goku during the battle against Seraph Gabriel. 317
- As Gogeta, he accesses Super Saiyan 4 Red Hair alongside Internalized Ultra Instinct and Internalized Ultra Ego. 317
Relationships
- Son Goku — lifelong rival and fellow Saiyan. Vegeta repeatedly calls him a low-class warrior, but eventually accepts fusion with him when survival demands it. 13 317
- Son Wuling — initially an enemy and the source of many humiliations; later a training partner, reluctant ally, and rival. Wuling defeats Vegeta on Earth, removes his tail, and enforces their costume wager. 14 58 59
- Bulma — his partner and the mother of Trunks and Bulla. Their relationship becomes evident through their shared home and family life. 52 140 272
- Trunks and Bulla — his children. Vegeta encourages Trunks to become strong independently and is supported by both children when his training falters. 160 272
- Videl — a hostile rival who fights Vegeta on Namek and later challenges him again on Earth. Her taunts frequently invoke his wager with Wuling. 27 52 54
- Frieza — former superior and the destroyer of Planet Vegeta. Frieza kills Vegeta on Namek after Vegeta attempts to provoke him into fighting Goku. 30 31
- Nappa — fellow Saiyan subordinate during the invasion of Earth; Vegeta commands him without sentiment. 6
Trivia
- Vegeta’s Great Ape transformation is permanently unavailable because Son Wuling prevented his tail from growing back. 14
- He loses a wager to Son Wuling that requires him to wear women’s clothing for one day; Goku technically fulfills the same condition with a swimsuit hidden beneath his normal clothes. 59
- He initially refuses the Fusion Dance partly because he considers its movements more humiliating than his earlier costume punishment. 128
