Background / History

Son Gohan is the son of Son Goku and Chi-Chi, named in honor of Goku’s late grandfather. At four years old, he is polite, gentle, fearless in flight, and firmly committed to his dream of becoming a scholar rather than a martial artist 1 2.

Initially, Wuling respects Gohan’s wish to study and refuses to force martial arts upon him. The impending arrival of Vegeta and Nappa changes that choice: after Gohan understands that Goku, Chi-Chi, and Wuling could die, he agrees to train so he can protect his family 1 6.

Wuling entrusts Gohan to Piccolo because he knows his own attachment would prevent him from training the boy harshly. Under Piccolo’s survival training and sparring, Gohan becomes tougher, more disciplined, and less prone to tears; he also receives a demon-marked orange uniform and a sword 7 10 11.

On Namek, the Grand Elder unlocks Gohan’s latent potential. When Frieza brutally injures Piccolo, Gohan’s rage allows him to overpower Frieza temporarily and fire an amplified Masenko; Piccolo recognizes that Gohan’s potential exceeds the other fighters’ 27 29. His greatest flaw is the intensity of his grief and rage when people close to him are harmed. Frieza’s attack on Piccolo, Wuling’s apparent death, and Wuling Cell’s threat each provoke frighteningly ruthless outbursts from him 29 35 99. Training gradually gives him greater discipline: he learns to maintain Super Saiyan calmly, stabilizes Super Saiyan 4, and later fights Broly through patience and strategy rather than overwhelming force 93 115 151.
