Background / History

Born into the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, Yu Xiaogang suffered a harmful innate Martial Soul mutation that left him with only half a rank of Innate Soul Power. He remained permanently stalled at Rank 29 and was eventually expelled from the clan and removed from its genealogy. His need to prove he was not useless became the driving force behind his theoretical research 2 67 68.

He gained continent-wide recognition as the Grandmaster through his Martial Soul theories, including the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul. His work also spread knowledge formerly concentrated among powerful clans and factions, benefiting lower-class Soul Masters; however, he lacked personal experience absorbing a third Soul Ring 2.

At Notting Academy, Yu Xiaogang recognized Tang San and Lu Shi as exceptional work-study students with Innate Full Soul Power and Waste Martial Souls. He successfully took Tang San as a disciple, but Lu Shi rejected him and challenged both his cultivation and research credentials 2.

Lu Shi then manipulated Yu Xiaogang with fabricated “ancient tome” theories concerning attribute compatibility and Martial Soul mutation. Yu Xiaogang traded his Soul Beast reference book for this information, accepted it as genuine, and later treated its ideas as the foundation for Tang San’s poison-focused cultivation path 3 6.

Yu Xiaogang later joined Shrek Academy, where he publicly presented Tang San as the proof of his theories. His authority was increasingly undermined when Zhu Zhuqing safely absorbed a Soul Ring beyond his stated age limit, validating Lu Shi’s newer theory instead 44 66 68.

Tang San’s repeated poison-attribute Soul Ring absorptions severely damaged his meridians. Yu Xiaogang avoided responsibility by attributing the problem to unresolved Martial Soul Backlash and recommended further dangerous treatment based on multi-attribute Soul Ring absorption 45 46.

After Tang Hao attacked him for Tang San’s condition, Yu Xiaogang survived but was left physically and psychologically unstable. Public exposure of his weak innate Soul Power and defective Martial Soul later drove him from Imperial Academy back to Notting, where he became obsessed with finding another prodigy to train into a tournament champion 94 95 111.

When Tang San learned that Yu Xiaogang had falsely claimed Lu Shi’s Attribute Compatibility Theory as his own, he turned on his former teacher. Tang San crippled Yu Xiaogang’s meridians, leaving him unable to use Soul Power, and subjected him to prolonged humiliation and abuse 115 116 117.

Yu Xiaogang ultimately left Notting alone to seek Flender in Heaven Dou City. Reduced to relying on the weakened Luo Sanpao for survival, he was robbed by a Black-backed Gorilla and later intercepted outside Heaven Dou City by criminals acting under Tang San’s orders 118 128 132.

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang was initially a middle-aged man with an average build, an unkempt beard and stubble, and a deliberately mysterious manner of dress 2 44.

• Wore a gray robe and black scarf during his first meeting with Lu Shi 2.
• Had a stiff expression, disheveled facial hair, and notably weak Soul Power fluctuations 44.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang’s scholarly ambition is inseparable from his insecurity. Years of ridicule over his defective Martial Soul and low Innate Soul Power left him desperate to establish himself as someone whose theories could surpass the power he personally lacked 2 68.

He is highly protective of his reputation and reacts poorly when his authority is questioned. His excitement over Oscar’s Innate Full Soul Power, Tang San’s potential, and Lu Shi’s discoveries consistently stems from their potential to validate or expand his own status as a theorist 44 67 68.

Although he presents himself as humble and selfless before Tang San, he conceals that key parts of his guidance came from Lu Shi’s fabricated records. When Tang San’s cultivation failed, Yu Xiaogang improvised explanations that shifted blame away from his poison-attribute theory 6 45 46.

Martial Soul: Luo Sanpao

Yu Xiaogang’s Martial Soul, Luo Sanpao, is the defective result of his Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Martial Soul mutation. It manifests as an out-of-body creature resembling a pig-like dog 3 6 68.

• Its first Soul Skill releases a powerful, foul-smelling gas blast with a shockwave effect 6 68.
• Luo Sanpao’s attack capacity is limited and can be replenished with white radishes 6.

Recruitment at Notting Academy

Yu Xiaogang attempts to recruit Lu Shi after identifying his Innate Full Soul Power and unusual Martial Soul. Lu Shi refuses, exposes Yu Xiaogang’s lack of practical cultivation experience, and feeds him misleading theories in exchange for a valuable Soul Beast reference book 2 3.

Tang San’s Poison Cultivation

Using the ideas obtained from Lu Shi, Yu Xiaogang directs Tang San toward venomous Soul Rings. Tang San initially gains control and poison abilities, but the repeated incompatible choices alter his body and eventually damage his meridians 6 14 45.

Shrek and the Collapse of His Authority

Yu Xiaogang arrives at Shrek Academy as Tang San’s teacher and Flender’s former companion. He tries to establish Tang San as the ultimate success of his research, but Lu Shi’s theories and Zhu Zhuqing’s successful high-age Soul Ring absorption publicly undermine his authority 44 66 68.

Loss of Tang San

Tang Hao’s distrust escalates into a near-fatal assault on Yu Xiaogang. Though Tang San initially remains loyal, he later learns the truth about Yu Xiaogang’s borrowed theory and destructive guidance, then permanently cripples and abandons him 94 114 115.

Exile and Decline

Yu Xiaogang leaves Notting Academy alone, hoping to reach Flender in Heaven Dou City. Without Soul Power or physical security, he becomes dependent on Luo Sanpao and suffers repeated humiliation and exploitation during the journey 118 128 132.
