Lin Ling is innocent, literal-minded, and profoundly unfamiliar with human politics, etiquette, and written language. He initially judges Shi Changyuan less for executions or court punishments than for repeatedly breaking his flowerpot, and he persistently demands fair compensation for it 1 2. His simple moral reasoning leads him to believe that people who are scolded must have done something bad, while a good mushroom would never do wrong 8.

He is affectionate, trusting, and quick to form attachments. Lin Ling entrusts Shi Changyuan with the flowerpot linked to his cultivation, treats the Emperor as a source of safety, and eventually recognizes that he does not want to leave him for cultivation 7 11 22.
