Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Gained sentience and attained human form 49 Lin Ling’s preserved paintings record his development from an ordinary sentient mushroom into a spirit able to take human form.
Human form, but weak cultivation 22 Despite taking human form, he is not yet a powerful demon; he remains vulnerable to cold and requires winter hibernation.
Improved cultivation 44 Gains control over the potency of his poison, allowing him to avoid harming Shi Changyuan; his hallucinations had previously been limited to dreams.

Appearance

Lin Ling’s human form is a delicate, strikingly beautiful youth whose appearance is often mistaken for that of a pampered aristocratic son rather than a wilderness spirit 4. His original form is a thumb-sized, milky-white mushroom growing in a clay flowerpot 2.

  • Slender build, fair skin, delicate features, and bright eyes 4.
  • Initially wears a foreign-style white robe with gold patterns, loose hair, bare feet, and a small braid over his right shoulder 4.
  • His skin is unusually sensitive to rough clothing fabrics 5.
  • His mushroom form is short and squat, with its cap making up roughly half its height 2.
  • His spores can cause his skin to flush red when they become unstable or emotionally affected 17 18.

Personality

Lin Ling is innocent, literal-minded, and profoundly unfamiliar with human politics, etiquette, and written language. He initially judges Shi Changyuan less for executions or court punishments than for repeatedly breaking his flowerpot, and he persistently demands fair compensation for it 1 2. His simple moral reasoning leads him to believe that people who are scolded must have done something bad, while a good mushroom would never do wrong 8.

He is affectionate, trusting, and quick to form attachments. Lin Ling entrusts Shi Changyuan with the flowerpot linked to his cultivation, treats the Emperor as a source of safety, and eventually recognizes that he does not want to leave him for cultivation 7 11 22. Although easily persuaded by food, gifts, and gentle coaxing, he ultimately rejects coercion: he stays with Shi Changyuan because he loves him, not because he is trapped 16 29.

Lin Ling is curious and increasingly eager to learn. He begins illiterate, studies in exchange for imperial dishes, develops a fondness for storybooks and romance tales, and later uses his literacy to carve names for other spirits and prepare wedding invitations 3 15 23 30. He remains playful, food-motivated, and prone to dramatic embarrassment when confronted with romantic implications 14 17 18.

Abilities & Skills

Dream Manipulation and Spore Illusions

Lin Ling uses hallucinogenic spores to enter and alter dreams.

  • Replaces Shi Changyuan’s recurring nightmare with an illusion of the Imperial Study 1.
  • Creates peaceful dreams that improve Shi Changyuan’s sleep 2 5.
  • Grows Good-Dream Mushrooms from his own spores for Shi Changyuan’s bedside 5 9.
  • His early hallucinations are limited to dreams; later cultivation improves his control over their strength 44.

Transformation

Lin Ling can shift between a human-like spirit form and his original mushroom form.

  • His original form is a thumb-sized, milky-white mushroom planted in a flowerpot 2.
  • He uses his human form to live openly in the palace under the cover identity of a hidden guard 4.
  • He can revert to mushroom form to conceal himself, including while resting in the palace 8.

Poisonous Spores

Lin Ling possesses poison capable of inducing numbness and hallucinations.

  • As an ordinary mushroom, he pricked a spy who then became numb, fell from a roof beam, and saw hallucinations 44.
  • He fears accidentally poisoning Shi Changyuan, but can regulate the poison after his cultivation improves 44.

Qinggong and Concealment

Despite his lack of combat experience, Lin Ling moves and hides exceptionally well.

  • He is adept at climbing palace walls and navigating roof beams 14.
  • A hidden guard considers his qinggong and concealment skill exceptional even among elite guards 14.

Cultivation and Hibernation

Lin Ling’s cultivation remains incomplete and is tied to his physical condition.

  • The survival of his cultivated Mushroom can affect his own cultivation, potentially causing harm or forcing him back into his original form 7.
  • Cold weather makes him sleepy, and he hibernates for most of winter 18 21.
  • He seeks places such as Kunlun Mountain and the Dragon Vein to cultivate, hoping to become stronger and shorten his hibernation 12 22.

Items

  • Sky-blue flowerpot — tribute flowerpot selected by Lin Ling as compensation for the one Shi Changyuan destroyed 3.

  • Fox mask — given and personally fastened by Shi Changyuan during the South City Temple Fair 10.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Dream Visitor and Flowerpot Dispute

Lin Ling begins as a mushroom spirit living on a beam in the Imperial Study. After Shi Changyuan destroys his flowerpot, he repeatedly enters the Emperor’s dreams to demand compensation, unintentionally easing the nightmares rooted in Shi Changyuan’s past 1 2. His insistence eventually earns him a new flowerpot and Shi Changyuan’s promise of protection as something belonging to the Emperor 3.

Hidden Guard of the Imperial Study

During an assassination attempt, Shi Changyuan rescues Lin Ling and publicly identifies him as a hidden guard to protect his supernatural identity 4. Lin Ling adapts poorly but enthusiastically to human clothing, palace routines, literacy lessons, food, and the responsibilities of observing the court from the rafters 5 6 15.

Cultivation and Return from the Dragon Vein

Lin Ling plans to leave for Kunlun Mountain to cultivate, but delays his journey at Shi Changyuan’s request 12. When the Dragon Vein becomes available as an alternative cultivation site, he accepts a seasonal arrangement: cultivate outside the palace during warmer months and return to Shi Changyuan for winter hibernation 22. He soon realizes he cannot bear a long separation and returns to the capital on his own 23.

Courtship and Mutual Devotion

As Lin Ling learns from romance stories, he gradually recognizes his attraction to Shi Changyuan. Their relationship develops through shared sleep, travel, study, gifts, and increasingly open physical affection 16 20 21 24. Lin Ling eventually attempts to steal a kiss, and Shi Changyuan tells him he never needs to do so secretly 41 42.

Empress of Great Li

Shi Changyuan announces in court that he will marry and take an empress, making his intention toward Lin Ling public 45. Lin Ling’s spirit elders approve of the union, and his preserved paintings become a personal betrothal gift revealing that he had quietly accompanied Shi Changyuan for years 27 49. Their wedding and investiture establish Lin Ling as the newlywed Empress 49 57.
