Background / History

The Imperial Study was Lin Ling’s birthplace and first home. Before taking human form, he lived as a thumb-sized white mushroom on one of its carved ceiling beams, observing Shi Changyuan’s rule and the fearful ministers below. He wished to leave for the deep mountains, but his flowerpot was shattered amid the Emperor’s outbursts in the study, prompting him to demand compensation through Shi Changyuan’s dreams. 1

Years earlier, during a difficult winter before the realm’s unification, a young Shi Changyuan used the study while recovering from an injury. Lin Ling, still hidden on the beams, quietly watched over him; this period was later preserved in Lin Ling’s paintings. 49

After Lin Ling was discovered during an assassination attempt, Shi Changyuan publicly established him as a hidden guard and allowed him to remain openly in the study. The room gradually changed from an intimidatingly silent workplace into a place where Lin Ling slept, talked, studied, ate, and kept Mushroom—the Good-Dream Mushroom he cultivated for Shi Changyuan. 4 8 22

Description

The Imperial Study contains elaborately carved roof beams, a dragon throne, Shi Changyuan’s desk, and spaces for memorials, letters, books, and palace attendants. It is formal and oppressive during official business, but becomes notably livelier when Lin Ling is present. 1 8 12 49

• Ceiling beams — Lin Ling’s original residence and preferred resting place; he once removed roof tiles to moonbathe, accidentally allowing rain to blur memorials. 1 7

Lin Ling’s Home and Cover Identity

Shi Changyuan presents Lin Ling as a hidden guard after saving him from an assassin in the Imperial Study. Lin Ling then openly occupies the roof beams, though he initially maintains the appearance of secretly returning there at night. 4 5 8

Place of Learning

Shi Changyuan teaches Lin Ling language, names, reading, and writing in the study after learning that the mushroom spirit is illiterate despite having been born among scholars and examination graduates. 3 6 22

• Lin Ling later studies there daily, motivated by promises of imperial cuisine and additional dishes for each extra character learned. 22

Dream Counterpart

Lin Ling can use hallucinogenic spores to alter Shi Changyuan’s nightmares. He repeatedly transforms the Emperor’s nightmare landscape into a bright, familiar version of the Imperial Study. 1 2

• The dream study initially serves as the setting for Lin Ling’s demands for a replacement flowerpot. 1
• Its disappearance when Lin Ling leaves reveals that the dreamscape is sustained by his presence and spores. 2

• Flowerpot dispute — Shi Changyuan accidentally destroys Lin Ling’s flowerpot in the study; Lin Ling begins entering his dreams to seek compensation. 1
