Background / History

Shunde serves at Shi Changyuan’s side as his chief eunuch. He is accustomed to interpreting the Emperor’s volatile moods and elliptical orders, though even he cannot always discern their intended object; when commanded to “smash it,” he respectfully asks for clarification and withdraws when none is given 3.

As Lin Ling becomes part of palace life, Shunde quietly accommodates him without demanding explanations about his unusual origin. He supplies flowerpots, arranges clothing, manages attendants, and gradually regards Lin Ling as someone important enough to serve alongside the Emperor 9 31.

Personality

Shunde is cautious, discreet, and highly perceptive. He lowers his eyes, minimizes his presence, and knows when not to hear or see sensitive matters in the Imperial Study 4 6.

He is also practical and quietly supportive of Shi Changyuan’s attachment to Lin Ling. Although often anxious about the Emperor’s temper or Lin Ling’s unpredictable behavior, he facilitates their daily life rather than opposing it 11 12 31.

Lin Ling’s Arrival

When Shi Changyuan’s moods worsen following Lin Ling’s absences, Shunde becomes a direct witness to the Emperor’s unusual attachment. He receives vague commands, observes the flowerpots prepared for Lin Ling, and later obeys the order to remove the old turtle—an action prompted by Shi Changyuan’s frustration 3 4.

After the assassination attempt reveals Lin Ling’s presence in the Imperial Study, Shunde prepares clothes for him and accepts the official explanation that Lin Ling is a hidden guard. He does not challenge the story despite recognizing Lin Ling’s special treatment 6 5.

Lin Ling’s Integration into Palace Life

Shunde arranges Lin Ling’s conspicuously luxurious “secret guard” uniform and privately concludes that Lin Ling is more likely being prepared as a future empress than treated as an ordinary guard 5.

He remains nervous when Lin Ling approaches Shi Changyuan immediately after a bloody court execution, but observes that the Emperor responds with restraint. Shunde offers the Emperor a handkerchief and watches as Shi Changyuan cleans his hands before Lin Ling 11.
