Cultivation Mechanics
Inner Tempering follows Qi Circulation and Force Infusion in the Golden Ape Fist's foundational sequence. Qi Circulation coordinates breathing with blood and qi; Force Infusion applies that stirred blood and qi to muscular exertion; perfected Force Infusion begins the body's Inner Tempering. 8 12
It is the stage at which an apprentice genuinely surpasses ordinary physical limits. A newly advanced practitioner can strike with roughly four hundred jin of force, while the upper end of the stage reaches approximately five to six hundred jin. Speed, reflexes, and bodily responsiveness also exceed ordinary human capability. 8 17
Effects
- Blood and qi become denser and can be summoned in powerful reserves. 17
- The body begins internally transforming, producing greatly increased strength and endurance. 8 17
- Su Xinghe's breakthrough heightened his hearing, smell, taste, and vision enough to detect an unfamiliar scent while surrounded by incense-sleeping guards. 17
- The realm is still below Ninth Grade Martial Warrior status; an Inner Tempering practitioner cannot reliably injure a Body Tempering martial warrior with bare fists alone. 18
Advancement Requirements
- Golden Ape Fist — Its Qi Circulation, Force Infusion, and Inner Tempering sections form the required foundation for the breakthrough. 8
- Nutrition and recovery — Repeated cultivation rapidly consumes blood and qi, causing severe hunger and requiring food, rest, or medicine. 9 33
- Listening to Tides Art — Su Xinghe's spiritual cultivation increases the efficiency of his blood-and-qi training by roughly thirty percent. 26
- Bone-Strengthening Soup — While active, the soup doubles Su Xinghe's Inner Tempering progress per Golden Ape Fist cycle, but lasts only about one hour. 30
- Qi-Replenishing Pills — The pills restore qi and blood for additional practice, though Elder Xie warns that excessive use can damage a practitioner's foundation. 32 33
Institutional Role
Great River Gang Contract
Veteran's Trade House used Inner Tempering as the primary benchmark for Su Xinghe's contract after transmitting Golden Ape Fist. 7
| Requirement | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Fail to reach Inner Tempering within three months | Serve the Great River Gang for twenty years. 7 |
| Reach Inner Tempering within three months | Become manager of Veteran's Trade House with a monthly salary of ten taels. 7 |
| Become a Martial Warrior within one year | Become a Trade House guest official, receive one hundred taels per month, a private courtyard, and freedom to choose assignments. 7 |
White Ape Martial Academy
White Ape Martial Academy gives new disciples three months to reach Inner Tempering. Those who fail must either leave or pay for a registered-disciple position. 29
Su Xinghe later conceals that he had already entered the Ninth Grade Realm, publicly demonstrating only enough strength to be recognized as an Inner Tempering practitioner and promoted to Inner Disciple. 35 43
