Background
Yiyangzi was a Mystic Gate cultivator of the Ancient Era who inherited the Black Emperor’s lineage and served as her Cang River envoy. Though commonly regarded as a Ghost Cultivator because of his ghostly body and realm, he considers himself an orthodox Mystic Gate practitioner. 232 765
He survived the collapse of the Ancient Heavenly Court by withdrawing into the Yin-Yang Realm. The realm—believed by some to have been created by the Black Emperor—became both his refuge and the basis of his continued existence. There he safeguarded the Six Heavens Yin Instrument and the dust-covered remains of thousands of ancient immortals connected to the Black Emperor’s faction. 172 175 582
Heaven and Earth rejected Yiyangzi after the fall of the Ancient Heavenly Court. Mysterious Capital Palace’s warning, “Myriad Tribulations Keep Yin Spirits from Sainthood,” meant that attempting to cross into the Longevity Realm would likely destroy his accumulated cultivation. 179 765
To resist the depletion of his ghost lifespan, Yiyangzi created the Nine Nether Reincarnation Art. It let him repeatedly reincarnate within the Yin-Yang Realm, but reincarnated bodies began weak, while returning to his original self consumed his remaining lifespan rapidly. 179 321
When the Yin-Yang Realm faced internal collapse and external assault, Yiyangzi finally emerged after more than two centuries of absence. He defended the realm against High Person Mùlián, Yuwen Rui, and other invaders, but the crisis exposed the limits of his prolonged seclusion and reincarnation method. 179 180 181
Zhongyuan later found him guarding the Six Heavens Yin Instrument and the ancient dead. Admitting that he could not protect them forever or reach Longevity through the Nine Nether Reincarnation Art alone, Yiyangzi asked Zhongyuan to preserve them. Zhongyuan instead entrusted him with the Xiangliu mask, allowing him to conceal himself from Heaven and Earth and reenter the wider world. 175
Appearance
In his restored Dharma King guise, Yiyangzi wears plain white robes, a golden crown, and black gauze over his face. 179
After leaving the Yin-Yang Realm, his incarnation is markedly less imposing: a short, plump, ragged old Daoist whose worldly behavior contrasts with his ancient reputation. 199
- A ghostly, emperor-like bearing when manifesting his full authority. 673
- A pale ghostfire aura and powerful yin-energy presence. 175
- A shabby and eccentric appearance while traveling with Su Che in Jiankang. 199
- His scattered soul-body can reduce his usable strength to the Eighth or Ninth Grade. 200
Personality
Yiyangzi is proud of his Mystic Gate identity and resents being equated with conventional Ghost Cultivators. His disdain for the Beimang Ghost Ancestor stems primarily from sectarian and philosophical pride: Yiyangzi secluded himself to study and preserve an inheritance, while the Ghost Ancestor built a following and intervened in mortal dynasties. 232
Despite his pride, he is deeply loyal. His millennia-long vigil over the ancient disciples and the Six Heavens Yin Instrument reveals a willingness to endure isolation, decline, and the certainty of his own death rather than abandon those entrusted to him. 175
Outside the Yin-Yang Realm, he is mischievous, evasive, and conspicuously worldly. He jokes with Su Che, asks after Jiankang’s brothels, and often disguises his intentions beneath vulgar humor. 199 239
As Su Che’s senior and occasional instructor, Yiyangzi is candid about the dangers of ambition. He recognizes Su Che’s potential to create a new Netherworld, but warns him not to become trapped by Zhongyuan’s obsession with restoring the Ancient Heavenly Court. 327
Abilities & Skills
Nine Nether Reincarnation Art
A self-created reincarnation art derived from Black Emperor lineage teachings and supported by the Yin-Yang Realm and Six Heavens Yin Instrument. 179 321
- Stripping Away — Removes unwanted elements from the root of one’s origin. 321
- Sealing — Isolates and reinforces what has been stripped away so it no longer affects the cultivator. 321
- Ghost Reincarnation — Preserves his consciousness by allowing rebirth as ghostly creatures. 179
- Limitation — Reincarnated bodies possess weak magical power; resuming his original form rapidly drains his ghost lifespan. 179
- Resurrection limit — Despite centuries of effort, Yiyangzi has never successfully awakened a single deceased disciple of the Black Emperor lineage. 626
Ghost Mastery and Netherworld Arts
Yiyangzi is renowned as the Central Land’s foremost ghost master and Nether Lord, able to command ghosts through the principles of life, death, and incompleteness. 150
- Commands vast hosts of yin souls and ghostly manifestations. 180
- Uses refined talisman arts, illusions, and suppression methods even while weakened. 200 201
- Understands the metaphysical distinction between the Mystic Gate’s Netherworld—continuation after death—and the Buddhist conception of hell as karmic judgment. 151
- Treats ghosts not merely as servants, but as beings with whom a true Nether Lord must establish spiritual unity. 246
Black Emperor Lineage
Yiyangzi’s inherited arts and treasures were perfected through Ancient Era conflict, though his path remains constrained by Heaven and Earth’s rejection. 765
- Azure Origin Sky-Burning Parasol — Uses moonlight as fuel to unleash immortal-burning azure flames and manifest an umbrella-canopy world of mountains, rivers, creatures, and ghostly phenomena. 180
- Yin-Yang Laws — Explains and applies the balance of yin and yang, emphasizing that a Netherworld is necessary wherever a Heavenly Court exists. 241
- Nine Heavenly Human Arts — Teaches Su Che that the Nine Arts are the root from which the world’s major cultivation lineages and lesser paths emerge. 342
Cultivation Guidance
Yiyangzi possesses vast knowledge of the Secret Register of the Yin Heaven of Zhoujue, the General Compendium of the Six Heavenly Hells, Reverted Elixir formation, and the Black Emperor’s ancient inheritance. 232 233
- Guides Su Che in understanding the Dark Python Dharma manifestation and its eventual refinement through Ninth Nether Soul-Burning Yinflame. 233
- Explains the Virtue of Houtu, ghost refinement, and the duties of a Nether Lord. 246
- Warns Su Che of the gulf between Void Step cultivators, who manipulate existing laws, and Longevity Realm cultivators, who can alter the principles of Heaven and Earth themselves. 885
Equipment
- Six Heavens Yin Instrument — Bronze armillary sphere forged by the Black Emperor; preserves the spirits and remains of ancient disciples and is central to Yiyangzi’s reincarnation and resurrection efforts. 175 321
- Azure Origin Sky-Burning Parasol — Black Emperor treasure that gathers moonlight and releases azure immortal-burning fire. 180
- Xiangliu Mask — Given by Zhongyuan; conceals Yiyangzi from Heaven and Earth and gives him another chance to contend for Longevity. 175
- Hidden Dragon Soaring Canopy — A swift Elemental Magnetism-powered flying vessel used while traveling with Su Che. 239
Relationships
- Su Che — Mentor-like elder ally. Yiyangzi guides Su Che’s Mystic Gate and Netherworld cultivation, while Su Che accompanies him through Jiankang, Jade Sun Mountain, and later political conflicts. 232 241 246 885
- Zhongyuan — Ancient associate and senior. Zhongyuan recognizes Yiyangzi’s long vigil, gives him the Xiangliu mask, and agrees to protect the Six Heavens Yin Instrument and the ancient disciples. 175
- Black Emperor Zhi Guangji — Former master and source of Yiyangzi’s inheritance, treasures, and obligations. 175 232 765
- Yulizi — Same-generation cultivator from a parallel Ancient Era lineage; Yiyangzi regards Su Che as eligible to call him “Martial Uncle.” 232 408
- Young Lord Xue — Loyal confidant who managed the Yin-Yang Realm for 230 years in an effort to buy the Dharma King time to overcome his fate. 179
- Beimang Ghost Ancestor — Rival in reputation rather than personal enemy. Yiyangzi objects to being categorized with him, though he states that he bears no direct grudge. 181 232
- High Person Mùlián — Buddhist adversary whose vow to convert the Yin-Yang Realm into a Buddhist sanctuary directly threatened Yiyangzi’s foundation. 167 172
