"Sorry for the trouble." Taigong Wang bowed respectfully.
A breeze scattered the mist in the high heavens. Peace settled over heaven and earth. Two young Daoist attendants stood at the top of the steps.
Golden Horn Boy returned the bow with a smile. "No need for courtesy, Taigong. The Grand Master is waiting for you inside."
Silver Horn Boy sighed. "Your timing is remarkable, Taigong. The Grand Master suddenly left to travel some time ago and only returned a little while ago."
They spoke casually, as though discussing something perfectly ordinary.
Taigong Wang paused. He instinctively clenched a hand, then stepped through the doors and passed through hall after hall.
Following memories from centuries ago, he reached a quiet chamber lined with precious bottles and filled with the fragrance of elixirs. At its center stood an Eight Trigrams Furnace, beneath which flames burned like rosy clouds.
An old man with white hair and beard watched the shifting vapors within the furnace. His back was straight, his hands clasped behind him.
Taigong Wang bowed respectfully, but before he could speak, Daode Heavenly Venerable turned to face him.
"Jiang Shang."
Taigong Wang's hands and feet went cold. His body trembled uncontrollably, and fear surged into his eyes.
His memories told him that the Daoist before him was unmistakably Daode Heavenly Venerable, Taishang of Immortal Paradise.
Yet somehow, his face had begun to overlap with Heavenly Venerable Yuanshi's.
Every feature was identical.
Meng Qi's eyes were unfathomable. The flames behind him suddenly leaped up, illuminating the chamber, and a faint smile touched his lips.
"So you've come."
Taigong Wang stared at the Daoist before him for a long time without speaking.
At last, he gave a bitter smile. His arms fell limp at his sides.
"The Three Pure Ones
