Background / History

In Luffy’s original timeline, Kaido had already fallen in Wano Country before the chat group’s events; the Straw Hats were preparing the Wano liberation feast three days after his defeat. The Kaido who later reaches Marineford is the historical version in the branching timeline created by Luffy’s return to the past. 2 4 19

During the altered Summit War, Su Lin purchased temporary Kaido-themed combat instruction and Roger-like Conqueror’s Haki, then impersonated Kaido to create spectacle and distract the Marines. The disguise convinced nearly everyone at Marineford that Kaido had trained Luffy, though the real Kaido remained elsewhere with his crew. 13 14

King discovered the televised impersonation and informed Kaido. Furious that someone had used his image, Kaido transformed into an Azure Dragon and flew toward Marineford ahead of his crew, intending to punish the impostor. Despite his anger, he admitted that the fake had convincingly captured his style and considered recruiting both the impostor and Luffy after defeating them. 15

Kaido reached Marineford after Su Lin had already abandoned the disguise. Unable to find Su Lin, he attacked Luffy after mistaking him for Su Lin’s ally, then proposed fighting Whitebeard, Sengoku, or Garp instead. 19

Luffy, in Nika form, confronted Kaido directly. Kaido fought in Azure Dragon form with lightning, flames, Haki, and techniques such as Thunder Bagua and Flame Bagua. Luffy’s prior experience fighting Kaido gave him an early advantage, but both combatants suffered serious injuries. 20

During Su Lin’s final spectacle, Kaido resumed fighting Luffy despite the interruption caused by Angel’s Feather healing. Luffy’s giant Nika-form elasticity allowed him to stretch and swing Kaido’s dragon body like a jump rope, while Su Lin’s summoning of another Kaido projection further confused the battlefield. 21

When Su Lin forced a ceasefire and the battlefield remained crowded with Luffy, Whitebeard, and Marine headquarters’ strongest forces, Kaido chose to withdraw rather than fight under unfavorable conditions. He intended to seek out his desired opponents individually later. 22 23

Appearance

Kaido is an imposing fighter who carries a spiked club and can assume an enormous Azure Dragon form. His arrival at Marineford and his battle with Gear Fifth Luffy are overwhelming enough to force weaker combatants and the Shichibukai away from the conflict’s center. 19 20

Personality

Kaido is battle-seeking, arrogant, and easily provoked by insults to his reputation. Upon learning of Su Lin’s impersonation, he immediately abandoned his ship’s route and flew to Marineford to personally punish the offender. 15

Despite his aggression, he is not reckless. He evaluates combat conditions pragmatically: he considered recruiting powerful opponents, recognized when Marineford had too many dangerous factions present, and withdrew rather than enter a battle he could not enjoy on his own terms. 15 19 23

Kaido is also readily entertained by powerful opposition. After recognizing Luffy’s strength, he declared that he would not be bored and immediately fought the awakened pirate at full strength. 20
