Background

Shan Yao became a jockey at eighteen and made her official debut at nineteen. Despite maintaining a respectable win rate, she spent four years largely restricted to unpopular pacemakers and weaker stakes mounts. Owners commonly favored established male jockeys for leading horses, while Shan Yao’s lower physical strength was treated as a disadvantage in the final drive. 10 17
