Background

Yu Xiaogang is the son of Yu Yuanzhen, the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s leader. His flawed martial soul prevented him from attaining the strength expected of his clan background, leaving him at level 29 despite his reputation as a “Grandmaster” of Soul Master theory 5 25.

At Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy, he maintains connections with the headmaster and spends time researching in the library. He intervenes when the academy gate guard humiliates Lin Yue, Tang San, and Old Jack, dismissing the guard and threatening to report him 4.

After learning that Lin Yue and Tang San possess Innate Full Soul Power, Yu Xiaogang resolves to take them as disciples. His private motive is to use their potential achievements to restore his own reputation as a theoretical master 4.

He has published the Ten Core Competitive Theories of Martial Souls, which he invokes as proof of his theoretical authority when attempting to recruit Tang San 10.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is deeply insecure about his cultivation, status, and past humiliation. He presents himself with the confidence of an authoritative master, but reacts angrily when Lin Yue questions his theories or exposes his level-29 cultivation 4 5.

His desire to mentor gifted children is mixed with self-interest. He sees Tang San and Lin Yue as a means to prove his theories and reclaim recognition from those who once dismissed him 4 10. Even after Tang Yin repeatedly rejects him, he interprets her hostility as the pride expected of a genius and continues seeking ways to recruit her 10.

He can show courage when faced with danger. During the encounter with the Red Flood Dragon Blood Lizard, he shields Tang Yin and urges her to survive, hoping that her future accomplishments will vindicate him before his father and clan 25.

His resentment also leads him to welcome others’ attempts to humiliate Lin Yue. During Feng Xiaolin’s initial confrontation with the children, he hopes Feng will defeat them so that he can intervene afterward and persuade them to accept his mentorship. Despite using Feng’s hostility for his own purposes, he considers Feng unworthy of becoming involved with his intended disciple 6.

Yu Xiaogang places considerable importance on hierarchy and respect for elders. When Tang Yin condemns Tang Hao, he rebukes her for disrespecting the Clear Sky Douluo and invokes the traditional obligations toward heaven, earth, sovereign, parents, and teachers. His admiration for Tang Hao prevents him from recognizing the depth of Tang Yin’s grievance 113 114.

Attempted Recruitment at Nuoding Academy

Yu Xiaogang first encounters Lin Yue and Tang San at Nuoding Academy’s entrance. He quickly suspects Tang San possesses Twin Martial Souls, then attempts to establish authority by praising her while degrading Lin Yue. This instead turns both children against him 4 5.

After Feng Xiaolin interrupts the encounter, Yu Xiaogang watches the ensuing duel in the hope that a defeat will make the children more receptive to his promises of guidance. Lin Yue’s performance instead exposes the limitations of Yu Xiaogang’s own combat ability 6.

Learning that the work-study students lack bedding, he purchases supplies and approaches Tang San while she is sweeping the academy grounds. His criticism of her sleeping arrangements and promise that she can surpass Lin Yue aggravate her hostility. She refuses his gifts, and her anger triggers a system commission for Lin Yue to teach Yu Xiaogang a lesson 10.

Conflict over Tang Yin’s Development

He repeatedly argues that Blue Silver Grass is inherently weak and should be strengthened through poison-attribute spirit rings. Lin Yue rejects this approach, prioritizing the martial soul’s life-oriented potential and Tang Yin’s long-term growth 20.

Yu Xiaogang’s errors become increasingly public after he dismisses the Jade Bamboo Grove and fails to recognize its interconnected root system. Tang Yin later proves the effectiveness of her nearly seven-hundred-year Jade Bamboo Grove spirit ring by using Growth to bind him effortlessly 21 23.

Soul Hunting Forest Crisis

When the Red Flood Dragon Blood Lizard overwhelms Su Yan, Yu Xiaogang attempts to protect Tang Yin despite his fear. He survives after Lin Yue and Tang Yin conceal the true circumstances of the monster’s defeat with restorative potions and a fabricated explanation 25 27.

Continued Obsession with Tang Yin

After Tang Yin’s absorption of the Life Marrow Spirit Bone evolves her Blue Silver Grass, Yu Xiaogang obsessively documents her changes as evidence for new martial-soul-evolution theories. He remains determined to become her teacher despite her continued indifference and hostility 31 35.

Parallel-World Contrast

In the original world, Tang San becomes Yu Xiaogang’s disciple and trusts his guidance. Watching Tang Yin’s alternate-life memories, however, Tang San sees Lin Yue dismantle Yu Xiaogang’s assumptions about Twin Martial Souls and Blue Silver Grass, prompting him to question whether his master’s knowledge is truly reliable 47 51 52.

Tang San’s comparisons extend to material support. Lin Yue supplies Tang Yin with food, money, equipment, and cultivation resources, whereas Tang San must devote substantial effort to earning money and preparing his own weapons. He privately questions whether his teacher is less capable of making money than a six-year-old child 46 51.

After seeing the Life Marrow Spirit Bone, Tang San concludes that a powerful life-compatible Spirit Bone is the key to evolving Blue Silver Grass and plans to ask Yu Xiaogang to locate one. He also seeks money for Whale Rubber, but Yu Xiaogang doubts its effect on Spirit Ring absorption and lends money only reluctantly. Tang San subsequently discovers that Spirit Hall has purchased the available supply, deepening his resentment over the support and opportunities he lacks 53 91.

Witness to Tang Hao’s Revelation

After the return from Star Dou Forest, Tang Hao recruits Yu Xiaogang as a witness when revealing his identity and Tang Yin’s family origins. Yu Xiaogang enthusiastically announces that her father is the renowned Clear Sky Douluo and praises his accomplishments, failing to notice that the revelation is distressing rather than reassuring to her 113.

Tang Hao asks Yu Xiaogang to act as a guide and accompany Tang Yin to Heaven Dou Imperial City. Yu Xiaogang interprets this request as recognition of his theoretical knowledge, clan background, and character, as well as tacit permission to become her teacher. Tang Hao’s own motives include drawing the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan into his plans and exploiting Yu Xiaogang’s past connection with Bibi Dong to obtain guidance on Twin Martial Soul cultivation 113.

When Tang Yin condemns Tang Hao for watching without helping Lin Yue during a near-fatal crisis, Yu Xiaogang rebukes her for disrespecting her father. She ignores him, reasserts that she is Tang Yin rather than Tang San, and declares that she would abandon the Clear Sky Hammer and sever ties with the Clear Sky Sect rather than accept its demands. She leaves both men behind, rejecting the authority Yu Xiaogang had expected Tang Hao’s support to provide 114.
