Background / History

Seven years before the present events, Yan Shaozhe clashed with Lin Fan after Ma Xiaotao’s Evil Fire lost control and nearly harmed someone. Yan offered compensation rather than addressing the underlying danger; Lin rejected it, and Elder Zhou subsequently took Lin away from Shrek Academy. Yan later regretted not disciplining Lin more severely at the time. 15 17

When Ma Xiaotao again lost control near Sea God Lake, Yan arrived after Lin Fan had protected Huo Yuhao and Wang Dong. He accepted responsibility for his disciple and entered the lake to retrieve her, but the academy’s response still centered on silencing the endangered freshmen with Soul Ascension Pills. Mu En held Yan responsible for failing to restrain Ma Xiaotao and ordered him to reflect. 1 7

Yan challenged Lin Fan after Lin demanded greater compensation for the victims. Confident that his Level 95 cultivation would surpass Lin’s Level 94, Yan wagered a year of salary against Lin’s claim. Lin redirected Yan’s attacks and shattered his Bright Phoenix Avatar, forcing Yan to honor the wager and later provide a Ten Thousand Year Soul Bone and five million Gold Soul Coins. 7 8 9

Yan attempted to undermine that compensation by withholding the promised spatial-attribute soul bone, replacing it with Gold Soul Coins and an unsuitable fire-attribute soul bone. Lin kept both the coins and the substitute soul bone, which he later gave to Leng Yaozhu. Yan thereafter ordered Du Weilun to monitor auctions for the bone, investigate Leng Yaozhu, and avoid confronting Lin openly until Xuan Zi returned. 15 16 17

Unable to defeat Lin directly, Yan used his influence to interfere with Lin’s teaching assignment and encouraged students to make the young teacher look incompetent. Most of the students refused, however, because they had known Lin as a classmate and had heard Ling Luocheng speak favorably of him. 21 22

After Xuan Zi returned to Shrek, Yan presented a grievance-filled account of Lin’s actions, emphasizing the lost soul bone and Ma Xiaotao’s condition. He later supported Xuan’s decision to deny Huo Yuhao’s team the Freshman Grand Competition victory and core-disciple rewards despite acknowledging that their Martial Soul Fusion Skill was stronger. 51 53 54

Yan’s attempts to preserve Shrek’s authority ultimately failed. Mu En restored Huo Yuhao’s team as the proper winners, Lin Fan left Shrek, and Ling Luocheng resigned despite Yan’s insistence that she owed the academy for its investment in her. When Xuan Zi lost an arm after attacking Lin, Yan escorted him for treatment under Mu En’s order. 56 57 60

Personality

Yan Shaozhe is proud of his status, cultivation, and position as dean. He initially treats Outer Court students as less important than Inner Court disciples, and he repeatedly prioritizes Ma Xiaotao’s interests and Shrek Academy’s reputation over accountability for the danger caused by her Evil Fire. 7 15

His defeats and public humiliations intensify his resentment toward Lin Fan. Since he cannot overcome Lin by force, Yan resorts to indirect retaliation: manipulating compensation, influencing students, conducting investigations, and appealing to senior authorities such as Xuan Zi. 17 21 51

He also displays an institution-first mindset. Yan invokes Shrek’s resources, glory, and past investment to pressure Ling Luocheng into staying, rather than directly addressing her accusation that Xuan Zi’s faulty intelligence nearly killed her. 57
