Background / History

Seven years before the present events, Yan Shaozhe clashed with Lin Fan after Ma Xiaotao’s Evil Fire lost control and nearly harmed someone. Yan offered compensation rather than addressing the underlying danger; Lin rejected it, and Elder Zhou subsequently took Lin away from Shrek Academy. Yan later regretted not disciplining Lin more severely at the time. 15 17

When Ma Xiaotao again lost control near Sea God Lake, Yan arrived after Lin Fan had protected Huo Yuhao and Wang Dong. He accepted responsibility for his disciple and entered the lake to retrieve her, but the academy’s response still centered on silencing the endangered freshmen with Soul Ascension Pills. Mu En held Yan responsible for failing to restrain Ma Xiaotao and ordered him to reflect. 1 7

Yan accepted Lin Fan’s duel challenge after objecting to the compensation Lin was to receive. Confident that his Level 95 cultivation would surpass Lin’s Level 94, Yan wagered a year of salary against Lin’s claim. Lin redirected Yan’s attacks and shattered his Bright Phoenix Avatar, forcing Yan to honor the wager and later provide a Ten Thousand Year Soul Bone and five million Gold Soul Coins. 7 8 9

Yan attempted to undermine that compensation by withholding the promised spatial-attribute soul bone, replacing it with Gold Soul Coins and an unsuitable fire-attribute soul bone. Lin kept both the coins and the substitute soul bone, which he later gave to Leng Yaozhu. Yan thereafter ordered Du Weilun to monitor auctions for the bone, investigate Leng Yaozhu, and avoid confronting Lin openly until Xuan Zi returned. 15 16 17

Unable to defeat Lin directly, Yan used his influence to interfere with Lin’s teaching assignment and encouraged students to make the young teacher look incompetent. Most of the students refused, however, because they had known Lin as a classmate and had heard Ling Luocheng speak favorably of him. 21 22

Ling Luocheng later described most of Shrek’s teachers as supporting Yan, with opponents being marginalized. Yan and his associates also spread a hostile portrayal of Lin among the teachers, depicting him as a villain who had obtained his position through connections. Wang Yan knew of this reputation but also understood that Lin remained at Shrek because of Elder Zhou. 27 40

After Xuan Zi returned to Shrek, Yan presented a grievance-filled account of Lin’s actions, emphasizing the lost soul bone and Ma Xiaotao’s condition. He later supported Xuan’s decision to deny Huo Yuhao’s team the Freshman Grand Competition victory and core-disciple rewards despite acknowledging that their Martial Soul Fusion Skill was stronger. 51 53 54

Yan’s attempts to preserve Shrek’s authority ultimately failed. Mu En restored Huo Yuhao’s team as the proper winners, Lin Fan left Shrek, and Ling Luocheng resigned despite Yan’s insistence that she owed the academy for its investment in her. When Xuan Zi lost an arm after attacking Lin, Yan escorted him for treatment under Mu En’s order. 56 57 60

During subsequent tournament preparations, Yan asked Mu En how to select replacement members of the Shrek Seven Monsters and who should lead the team. Mu En ordered selection according to strength and appointed Xuan Zi as leader, partly to help restore his reputation. Yan agreed to arrange the selections and coordination training, confidently predicting that Xuan would lead Shrek to the championship and would not repeat the mistakes that had previously killed eight Inner Court disciples. 73

That assurance was later contradicted by the Death Messenger mission. Under Xuan Zi’s supervision, a corpse-explosion trap killed the main team members other than Ma Xiaotao and Dai Yueheng, who were critically injured and captured. Shrek’s depleted team subsequently lost its opening tournament match to Azure Abyss Academy, with Ling Luocheng and Leng Yaozhu overwhelming its representatives. No direct response from Yan to these events is shown in these chapters. 101 113 114

Personality

Yan Shaozhe is proud of his status, cultivation, and position as dean. He initially treats Outer Court students as less important than Inner Court disciples, and he repeatedly prioritizes Ma Xiaotao’s interests and Shrek Academy’s reputation over accountability for the danger caused by her Evil Fire. 7 15

His defeats and public humiliations intensify his resentment toward Lin Fan. Since he cannot overcome Lin by force, Yan resorts to indirect retaliation: manipulating compensation, influencing students, conducting investigations, and appealing to senior authorities such as Xuan Zi. 17 21 51

He also displays an institution-first mindset. Yan invokes Shrek’s resources, glory, and past investment to pressure Ling Luocheng into staying, rather than directly addressing her accusation that Xuan Zi’s faulty intelligence nearly killed her. 57

Yan’s hostility includes openly anticipating harm to Lin: when Xuan Zi launches his sneak attack, Yan visibly expects it to injure his adversary. His confidence in senior academy figures nevertheless persists after Xuan’s defeat, as he later insists that Xuan has learned from his previous failures and will safely lead Shrek to a tournament victory. 59 73

Duel for Compensation

Yan accepts Lin Fan’s challenge to settle their dispute over compensation. Despite possessing a higher cultivation level, he loses decisively, suffers public humiliation before Mu En and Du Weilun, and becomes obligated to provide Lin with money and a Ten Thousand Year Soul Bone. 7 8 9

Retaliation Against Lin Fan

After the duel, Yan avoids direct battle and instead uses administrative pressure. He manipulates the soul-bone compensation, orders investigations into Leng Yaozhu, and attempts to sabotage Lin’s teaching work through student interference. 15 17 21

His influence also extends to teacher factionalism and Lin’s reputation within the academy. Ling Luocheng describes opponents of Yan as marginalized, while Wang Yan is aware of the hostile image of Lin circulated under Yan and his associates’ direction. 27 40

Freshman Grand Competition

Yan accepts Xuan Zi’s decision to deny Huo Yuhao’s team their deserved victory and core-disciple positions. When Lin publicly challenges the ruling, Yan sides with Xuan and the academy officials rather than allowing an impartial re-evaluation. 53 54

He is subsequently stunned when Lin physically slaps Xuan Zi, having not expected their first meeting in seven years to begin with such an open attack on a senior academy figure. 55

Shrek’s Internal Collapse

Yan joins Zhou Yi and Xuan Zi in demanding punishment for Lin Fan and Huo Yuhao’s group. His attempt to keep Ling Luocheng in Shrek fails, while Lin’s departure, Ling’s resignation, and the withdrawal of Huo Yuhao, Wang Dong, and Xiao Xiao expose the limits of Yan’s authority. 56 57

Yan expects Xuan Zi’s subsequent sneak attack to injure Lin, but instead witnesses the consequences of Lin’s overwhelming spatial power. After Xuan loses an arm, Yan obeys Mu En’s order to take him to Elder Zhuang for treatment. 59 60

Continental Tournament Preparations and Failed Assurances

Yan helps organize the replacement Shrek Seven Monsters for the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament. He endorses Xuan Zi as team leader and assures Mu En that Xuan will not repeat the negligence responsible for the earlier deaths of eight Inner Court disciples. 73

The later Death Messenger ambush and Shrek’s first-round elimination overturn these expectations. Ma Xiaotao is among those critically injured and captured during the mission, while former Shrek student Ling Luocheng and the outsider Yan had rebuked, Leng Yaozhu, become the decisive fighters in Azure Abyss Academy’s victory over Shrek. 101 114

Refutation of Lin Fan’s Supposed Cultivation Limit

Yan’s claim that Lin could never advance beyond Level 94 becomes a recurring justification for dismissing Lin’s future potential. When Lin reaches Level 95, the future Sea God Pavilion observers explicitly recall Yan’s prediction and recognize that it has failed, with Lin’s newly awakened Time Martial Soul identified as the likely reason he overcame the bottleneck. 8 20 75
