Background
Mia lived at Wool's Orphanage as a chronically ill and physically frail child. Roy Smee treated her with medicine and became her principal source of comfort; his guilt over leaving his own daughter behind in a previous life made him especially protective of Mia 2 55.
After Roy left for Hogwarts, Mia became lonely and began secretly entering his room. There she discovered the Dark Magic books he had brought from Knockturn Alley, becoming absorbed in the forbidden knowledge they contained 55 63.
A blank book among Roy's belongings revealed Sebastian Sallow, a magically preserved copy of her ancestor's memories. Sebastian identified Mia as a Sallow descendant, told her of the abandoned family estate near Feldcroft and Vault 2026 at Gringotts, and offered to guide her through Slytherin's hidden legacy 63.
Appearance
Mia is a small, frail girl with golden hair and pale blue eyes. Her poor health gives her an unhealthy pallor, and she is often left bruised or exhausted after physical fights and uncontrolled magic 2 147 268.
- Golden hair 2
- Pale blue pupils, which can become black-red during severe Obscurus episodes 147 282
- Thin limbs and a sickly complexion due to her longstanding illness 55 268
- Her clothes were destroyed and her body severely burned during her first battle with Roy's attacks 147
Personality
Mia is intensely attached to Roy and fiercely protective of the people she considers family. She readily accepts Roy's request to look after Harry, later attacking Hermione on the assumption that Hermione was bullying him 84 267.
She is bold, curious, and impulsive. Mia explores dangerous family ruins, uses magic openly when frustrated, and pursues knowledge even when she does not fully understand its consequences 184 187. Her childhood innocence remains evident in her love of snacks, ice cream, attention, and practical magic such as cleaning spells 84 183 200.
Her experiences with abandonment, illness, Dark Magic, and the Obscurus have also made her suspicious and morally unstable. She is capable of manipulation—frequently invoking her illness to gain sympathy—and may resort to Unforgivable Curses when frightened or angry 173 215 268 281. When the Obscurus overwhelms her, much of her judgment and restraint disappear entirely 282.
Abilities & Skills
Obscurus
Mia contains an Obscurus: a mass of Dark Magic bound to her life force. Emotional distress can trigger black mist to leak from her body or erupt into a destructive transformation 173 174.
- Generates dense black mist capable of lifting rubble, striking targets, and tearing apart structures 147 282
- Rapidly regenerates after being damaged, allowing the mist to refill gaps in its defenses 147
- Can manifest corrosive Dark Magic whirlwinds that reshape the battlefield and interfere with victims' minds 282
- Evolved to drain and consume other people's life force during her rampage in Godric's Hollow 282
- Its power erodes her mind and worsens her instability when she draws upon it 151 282
- Cannot be removed all at once without killing Mia, as part of her life force is bound to it 190 198
Wandless Magic
Mia displayed instinctive magical talent before receiving formal education.
- Manipulated and crushed a mouse with invisible force while experimenting with magic 63
- Produced a small wandless Fiendfyre flame at only ten years old 63
- Cast Scourgify without a wand to clean Hermione Granger's stained dress 184
- Her unauthorized use of magic outside school risks Ministry consequences 184
Dark Magic
Sebastian trained Mia through his Memory Book, initially giving her access primarily to destructive and forbidden spells 84 145.
- Successfully produced a weak, poorly aimed Crucio during early training; she could not initially cast Avada Kedavra 84
- Learned Unforgivable Curses including Crucio, Imperio, and Avada Kedavra 84 268 281
- Uses additional Dark spells such as Flesh Separation, Blood Boiling, and Blood Decay during combat 282
- Her attempt to cast Imperio through a damaged wand backfired, knocking both herself and Harry unconscious 268
- Dumbledore restricted Sebastian from teaching her further Dark Magic and added safeguards to the Memory Book 174 177
Transfiguration
Mia possesses exceptional natural aptitude for Transfiguration despite her limited education.
- Solved McGonagall's Transfiguration puzzle exercises in under an hour 213
- Transfigured a triangular pyramid into a cube during private instruction 213
- Reached roughly first-year Hogwarts academic level through one-on-one lessons with McGonagall and Snape 218
Potions
Mia sought Potions lessons from Severus Snape before she was eligible to enroll at Hogwarts.
- Used her Obscurial condition and orphanhood to persuade Snape to admit her into his office 215
- Received treatment Potions brewed by Snape during her hospitalization 215
- Continued studying Potions privately under Snape before the school term began 218

- Wand — Her battered wand's exposed core malfunctioned during an attempted Imperio, releasing uncontrolled purple magic 268.

Relationships
- Roy Smee — Mia's guardian-like older brother and closest attachment. He treated her illness, built a home for them in Godric's Hollow, and repeatedly risks himself to protect her; Mia chooses to stay with him over the comfort of Hogwarts 2 147 176 177.
- Sebastian Sallow — Her ancestor's magical memory copy and first magical mentor. He revealed her Sallow heritage and taught her Dark Magic, though Dumbledore later restricted his instruction 63 174 177.
- Albus Dumbledore — Mia's legal guardian and a cautious mentor. He arranged reduced Ministry examinations, protects her from execution or confinement, and maintains a private pact not to reveal Sebastian's existence to Roy 174 176.
- Newt Scamander — Mia's caretaker and a specialist in Obscurials. He develops a gradual treatment plan intended to cleanse her Obscurus without taking her life 198 218.

- Minerva McGonagall — A protective teacher who nurtures Mia's Transfiguration talent while warning her not to take pride in bloodline supremacy 212 213.
- Severus Snape — Mia's reluctant Potions instructor and medical supporter. Though easily irritated by her persistence, he takes an interest in her potential and circumstances 215 218.
