The old Mexicans the bartender had mentioned were a group of Mexicans selling liquor in the old district.
A lot of so-called public intellectuals liked to spin tales about how hardworking Chinese people could make big money in America.
In reality, hardworking people were everywhere here.
Take Mexicans, for example.
Most of them were undocumented immigrants who had crossed the border, and they asked for even less money. The competition was brutal.
Most importantly, they spoke English, making them far more capable than many immigrants who could barely communicate.
And the old Mexicans had guts. They dared to do anything.
Like this illegal liquor factory before them, which operated only at night and dumped endless supplies of alcohol into clubs and bars.
A steady stream of dollars flowed in here. Without protection, the place would have been robbed countless times already.
"Wait, where are the old Mexicans we were promised? And where's the job?"
Li Ang and Frank had been watching from the black sedan parked in the alley for quite a while.
The rolling shutter of the illegal factory ahead was open, and there were lights inside, but not a single person had appeared.
"Did the hardworking old Mexicans slack off too?"
At Li Ang's words, Frank snorted. "Those old Mexicans are a bunch of blind idiots. They're not hardworking at all."
In many people's eyes, outsiders were disgusting because they stole too many job opportunities.
"Let's go take a look."
Li Ang unfastened his seat belt, opened the door, and prepared to get out.
"Wait."
Frank immediately called out, "This is Demon Gang territory. Take this."
He skillfully opened the glove compartment, pulled out a Glock, and handed it to Li Ang.
I'm a good guy. Shouldn't I be issued a USP?
Li Ang silently accepted it and tucked it into his waistband, where no one would see it.
Then Frank got out as well, and the two walked side by side.
With a big guy like Frank beside him, Li Ang inexplicably felt at ease.
Since they were on another gang's turf, they approached carefully.
"Not a sound."
The two exchanged a glance and went straight to the rolling shutter.
When they came closer, they saw an old Mexican lying on the ground, apparently sleeping peacefully.
But he definitely had not fallen asleep naturally.
Because quite a few others were sprawled around inside, all of them knocked out cold.
Their appearances were rather ugly, though. Some had huge lumps on their heads, while others had bruised and swollen faces.
"What happened?"
Frank immediately drew his pistol.
He might have been a big guy, but in Gotham, if a gun could solve a problem, brute force was never the answer.
"Be careful."
Li Ang signaled for him not to move and listened for a moment.
He heard faint breathing from inside, followed by gurgling sounds.
Someone was drinking?
For something like this to happen at a liquor dealer's place, someone had clearly come to drink without wanting to pay.
So the simplest solution was to knock everyone down. Then there would be no need to pay.
He had to admit.
That was very Gotham!
So he exchanged another look with Frank, and the two walked inside.
The person inside seemed not to have noticed them. Even when they stood right in front of her, she was still gulping down liquor.
"Is that... Harley Quinn?"
Frank recognized her at a glance.
Li Ang, on the other hand, stared for a long time. Harley Quinn really did look like she was dressed for a circus—her black-and-red bodysuit, the hood over her head...
"Who are you? Dressed so old-fashioned, you definitely aren't Puddin's men."
Harley Quinn finally glanced at them.
Frank looked at his neat suit, which made him appear so mature and composed.
Then he looked at Li Ang's casual outfit. She was definitely calling him old-fashioned!
Li Ang twitched his lips and said, "I was wondering who it was. That clown outfit of yours went out of style in the nineties. Wearing it now is just pathetic."
"Even circuses these days wouldn't hire you, ma'am."
"Fuck!"
Harley Quinn smashed a liquor bottle and sprang to her feet.
She stared at Li Ang for a long while.
"Burp~"
Just as Frank thought she was about to attack, she let out a drunken burp, then Harley Quinn began waving her arms and dancing around like a lunatic.
"You're right! Are you some kind of fashion master?"
Harley Quinn began circling Li Ang, then poked his arm with one slender finger. "Hey, how about you help me change my look and win Puddin' back? He's had a change of heart. He doesn't love me anymore!"
The sudden shift left Frank stunned. He had already been prepared to fight.
Though he definitely was no match for Harley Quinn, he had resolved not to go down too easily.
But hearing Harley Quinn's words, Li Ang understood her situation.
So the simp had been dumped.
No wonder she was drinking alone.
Li Ang said, "No."
"No? What do you mean, no?"
Harley Quinn looked a little angry, making Frank extremely nervous as he kept giving Li Ang meaningful looks.
Li Ang said, "You can't win Joker back. He never loved you in the first place."
"How is that possible?!"
At Li Ang's words, Harley Quinn screamed.
"You have no idea what he said to me! He said he'd love me forever, until the seas ran dry and the rocks crumbled. He also said..."
She stopped, then shook her head. "He said a lot more, anyway. A lot. If he doesn't love me, then who does he love?"
Harley Quinn's face was filled with murderous intent, as though she were about to beat up the other woman.
Li Ang calmly said, "Batman, of course."
"Joker has spent his entire life locked in a twisted love-hate relationship with Batman. How could he possibly change his heart because of you?"
Harley Quinn, her face full of killing intent, froze at that answer.
A woman consumed by doubt immediately began considering the cause and effect. As she searched her memories, it really did seem to be true.
Because no matter what Joker did, it was always to oppose Batman.
Whenever Batman appeared, Joker smiled happily.
"Ah!!"
"I'll never love you again! Never!"
Harley Quinn completely lost it and somersaulted backward out the door.
Bang!
Then she planted her head straight into the ground.
"Phew!"
Before long, the sound of her snoring reached them.
"Did she... drink too much?"
Frank asked.
"Looks like it."
Li Ang looked over the scene. Harley Quinn had no idea how much she had drunk. Her alcohol tolerance was terrifying.
"What do we do now?"
Frank asked Li Ang.
"Carry her to the car first. If we leave her here, someone will take advantage of her."
Li Ang said.
Frank obeyed without question, but he did not move. "You carry her. I don't dare."
He was afraid Harley Quinn was only pretending to sleep. If he touched her, his fingers would probably be smashed to pieces.
But he was not afraid of Harley Quinn. He was afraid of Joker.
Even Penguin Cobblepot found Joker to be a huge headache.
No ordinary person could handle a crazy beauty like her!
Not wanting to waste time, Li Ang picked Harley Quinn up.
She looked skinny, but the flesh was all where it ought to be. With his eye for such things, Li Ang estimated that her figure was astonishing—her circus-like outfit simply did not show it.
