Background / History

Harley formerly worked as a psychiatrist, a job she believes the Joker cost her. Their relationship was exploitative rather than loving; after leaving him, she becomes vulnerable to Gotham criminals who had feared the Joker’s protection. 25 28 84 145

She enters Li Ang’s life and immediately installs herself in his home, calling him “Daddy” and insisting on becoming Kara’s godmother. Though Kara rejects the claim, Harley grows sincerely protective of her and begins treating her as a daughter. 23 29 31

Li Ang helps Harley abandon her Joker-associated clown costume for a red-and-blue look with twin ponytails, lighter makeup, red lipstick, and a heart painted on her cheek. Harley regards the makeover as the birth of a “new” Harley Quinn separate from her past. 25

Appearance

Harley is a tall, long-legged blonde woman, described as approximately 1.7 meters tall. Her appearance shifts between casual elegance and flamboyant red-and-blue costuming. 23

  • Signature twin ponytails, often with red-and-blue tips. 25 103
  • Red-and-blue jacket and shorts, fishnet stockings, short boots, and a white corset-style top. 25
  • Lighter foundation than her former Joker-era makeup, with red lipstick, eyeliner, and a cheek heart. 25
  • Uses formal black-and-red gowns for special occasions. 103
  • Frequently carries a baseball bat. 31 84

Personality

Harley is impulsive, provocative, possessive, and driven by amusement. She readily starts fights, blurts out threats, and treats danger as entertainment, but she is also highly adaptable when a situation turns against her. 23 70 99

Her morality is erratic rather than conventionally malicious. Harley initially frames robbery and violent retaliation as helping Li Ang or “cleaning up” Gotham; later, she insists that eliminating anyone she labels bad would make her a good person. 29 70 She resists being called a hero even after the public credits her with making Gotham safer. 101 194

Harley is intensely loyal to those she accepts as family. Her attachment to Li Ang replaces her former dependence on Joker, while her concern for Kara, Ciri, and Rachel repeatedly shapes her actions. 78 84 146 148

Abilities & Skills

Enhanced Physiology

Poison Ivy’s serum grants Harley superior physical traits, allowing her to overwhelm ordinary gang members and perform acrobatic evasions.

  • Enhanced strength and speed. 27
  • Resistance to most toxins. 27
  • Exceptional agility; she dodges gunfire while airborne and moves like an acrobat. 26
  • Can defeat ordinary thugs with improvised weapons or her baseball bat. 26 31
  • Her physical advantages do not compensate for her lack of systematic combat training against skilled opponents such as Black Mask. 31 32

Telepathy

Li Ang’s enhancement awakens Harley’s ability to hear others’ thoughts.

  • Detected Poison Ivy’s jealousy immediately after gaining the power. 228
  • Initially treats the ability like a new toy, repeatedly using it on those around her. 228

Combat

Harley favors aggressive close-quarters attacks, improvisation, and overwhelming pressure.

  • Uses a baseball bat as her primary weapon and punctuates strikes with baseball-themed calls such as “Home run!” 26 31
  • Can coordinate with Poison Ivy, Black Canary, and Huntress in group battles. 31 77 100
  • Her direct attacks can be anticipated or countered by trained enemies and advanced technology. 31 84 100

Psychiatry and Manipulation

Harley retains professional psychiatric knowledge and uses it for intimidation and psychological games.

  • Exploits her former authority as a psychiatrist to declare Angela insane and commit her to Arkham Asylum. 145 146
  • Recognizes how to exploit curiosity, fear, and emotional vulnerabilities in others. 146 155
  • Can convincingly feign lingering attachment to Joker in order to mislead Hush. 73 74

  • Baseball bat — Harley’s preferred melee weapon; frequently destroyed or lost during stronger confrontations. 31 77 100
  • 1974 Ford — Bought by Harley for one dollar because it could carry Li Ang and the household more easily than a 1968 Alfa Romeo. 64
  • Red-and-blue costume — Her post-Joker identity, designed with Li Ang’s help. 25
  • Policewoman uniform and handcuffs — Used in a playful arrest scenario with Li Ang. 283

Relationships

  • Li Ang — Romantic partner and the central figure in Harley’s new life; her former fixation on Joker is replaced by devotion to him. 28 78 84

  • Rachel Roth — Another of Harley’s adopted daughters in practice; Harley refuses to let Angela meet Rachel and seeks to protect her from Trigon-related danger. 146 148
  • Joker — Former abuser and manipulator. Harley ultimately rejects him completely and refuses to free him. 28 76 78
  • Black Canary / Dinah Lance — Former territorial rival turned Birds of Prey ally; Harley is impressed by Canary Cry and recruits her into a team. 69 70
  • Huntress / Helena Bertinelli — Recruited by Harley into the Birds of Prey after Harley persuades the lone vigilante that cooperation is necessary in Gotham. 77
  • Batwoman / Kate Kane — Uneasy ally who comes to regard Harley as a good person despite Harley’s objections. 101 148
