Penguin once said.
James Gordon was perhaps the only good man in Gotham City.
Yet unfortunately, a place like Gotham could not accommodate even a single good man.
From detective to commissioner, no one knew how many assassinations and assaults James Gordon had experienced.
Although Commissioner Gordon remained a good man today, he had undoubtedly grown much more smooth and worldly, no longer as reckless as he had been in his youth.
Yet his hatred for evil remained unchanged.
Inside the interrogation room at the Gotham Police Department, he sat alone across from Li Ang, taking his statement.
Once the statement was finished, James Gordon immediately asked, "Li Ang, you should tell me the truth."
In the statement just now, Li Ang had claimed complete ignorance of everything.
"I know the Iceberg Lounge is Penguin's criminal base, and this matter definitely relates to his illegal activities."
"As long as you agree to become my informant..."
Before James Gordon could finish, Li Ang interrupted him.
"Commissioner Gordon, you are a good man."
Over the years, countless people had said these words to James Gordon, causing him to instantly sense that something was amiss.
"When Kara and I first arrived in this city, we received your help."
"Now, through hard work, we've finally managed to survive in Gotham City, and that hasn't been easy."
"She is studying properly, and I am working hard, all so that she can grow up healthy and happy."
If it were his younger days, James Gordon would have undoubtedly used every means possible, even coercion and bribery, to make Li Ang help him.
Yet Commissioner Gordon today understood Li Ang's words.
He could not ruin Li Ang and Kara.
This was the worldly wisdom he had learned.
Seeing James Gordon's expression soften, Li Ang immediately smiled and said, "Of course, I am also a law-abiding citizen. The moment anything happens, I will call the police right away."
Given this out, James Gordon nodded and said, "You may leave."
Li Ang stood up, extended a hand, and said, "Thank you, Commissioner Gordon."
James Gordon said nothing, merely watching him before finally reaching out to shake his hand.
Leaving the police station, it was already late at night.
Li Ang went to take a look at the Iceberg Lounge. It was not open today, and the cleanup had been completed at top speed.
Since he was not working, he simply went straight home.
The current Diamond District was jittery with tension, so despite the late hour, not a single robber was to be seen on the streets.
Under normal circumstances, Li Ang would have likely been cornered several times.
Of course, someone as smart as he would certainly not go out.
After all, a certain demographic possessed an astonishing talent in the dark night; as long as they didn't bare their teeth, they could achieve the effect of invisibility.
Whoever saw them found them a headache.
Thump, thump, thump.
With Li Ang's current bodily enhancement and acute five senses, he suddenly heard the sound of a cape rustling in the dark night.
Looking up, a black figure happened to cross the rooftop.
"Batman."
Li Ang felt nothing toward him, but perhaps due to working at the Iceberg Lounge, it made him tighten his posture and hurry back home.
Gotham at night belonged to the spandex-clad freaks; he neither wore spandex nor was a freak.
"Godfather!"
As soon as the door opened, Kara came out of her room.
Although children were prone to sleep, Kara possessed extraordinary innate talent after all, requiring only a brief slumber to become completely energized.
"It looks like you're all better."
Seeing Kara regain her liveliness, Li Ang was incomparably delighted.
Kara covered her ears with both hands and then said, "With a pop, it vanished, though I can try to hear it."
Ahem.
Li Ang hurriedly walked over and put his arm around Kara, leading her to the sofa.
"Kara, did you forget our agreement?"
Seeing Li Ang looking so nervous, Kara immediately smiled. "Of course not, I won't use my superpowers casually."
Kara had already decided not to use her mind-reading ability lightly.
Because after listening for so long, she discovered not only that the world was noisy, but that human hearts were very dark.
This was Gotham, after all...
The period of time Kara spent listening had nearly driven her to depression.
Almost everyone was thinking about how to scheme against those around them, or plotting a 'crime'.
Therefore, upon mastering the ability, Kara had immediately 'blocked out' these noises.
Under Li Ang's gentle guidance, Kara told him all about this.
Li Ang rejoiced that he hadn't been having random thoughts at the time, otherwise his persona in front of Kara would have collapsed completely.
"Human hearts conceal the corruption of the entire world, so it's best not to try and know what others are thinking."
Li Ang admonished Kara.
The ancients said to judge by actions rather than motives, and there was still truth to that.
As long as one was human, the inner mind would always have a dark side.
Still, Li Ang didn't say much more, preparing instead to set an example himself.
His bad habits had already vanished quite a bit, save for when there was truly no alternative, for after all, to eat and to lust are human nature.
The next day, Kara hurried off to study at Gotham High School.
The principal's threat was no joke.
If Li Ang had money, he could have used it to pave the way so Kara didn't have to attend classes on schedule.
Clearly, however, he did not.
Li Ang rested at home, going nowhere at all.
By afternoon, Kara came home from school, and Li Ang cooked dinner for her.
Kara tossed her schoolbag onto a chair and said, "Godfather, the school has an outdoor activity this weekend, and the teacher asked if I'm participating."
"Why not participate?"
Li Ang asked rhetorically while following a video to make egg fried rice.
Though he couldn't cook elaborate dishes, boiling rice was something Li Ang could manage.
So after getting the rice cooked, he specifically learned how to make egg fried rice...
As for stir-frying dishes, that would have to wait for the future.
Kara's body seemed swallowed by the old sofa, and she deliberately fidgeted with it as she said, "They're all too childish."
"Don't you have any friends?"
"None. We don't even have any common topics."
Kara said without the slightest hesitation.
Compared to a Kara who had experienced the destruction of Krypton and fled all the way, even her peers in Gotham were indeed far too childish.
"That's perfect then. Outdoor activities are meant for you to make friends; maybe you'll find some common topics."
Li Ang scooped the egg fried rice out of the wok.
He felt Kara was a lot like him.
When he was studying in his past life, Li Ang had also hated green camps, outings, and activities like that.
Yet once he grew up, he knew that appropriate group activities still needed to be attended.
"Godfather, why do I feel like you're trying to send me away?"
Kara said with a suspicious expression.
Ahem.
Li Ang suspected Kara was reading minds again.
Yet he could not show it.
He knew a French girl who had studied in China, spoke fluent Chinese, and most importantly, had a sweet appearance and a gorgeous head of black hair that made her feel very approachable, not to mention long legs.
Naturally, Li Ang wanted to find a time when the 'deadweight' Kara wasn't around to ask her out for a meeting.
Kara didn't know Li Ang regarded her as deadweight, but she was already very familiar with that expression.
Seeing the pint-sized wise guy she was, Kara earnestly advised, "You really should find me a godmother, otherwise people will genuinely think you're a creep."
"..."
Li Ang hastily served up the egg fried rice, blocking her mouth.
