Background / History
Rachel's biological mother, Arella—later living as Angela—was once a cult saintess who helped summon Trigon. After becoming pregnant with his child and learning that he was a dimensional demon god, she fled with Rachel to Azarath, sealed Rachel's memories, and eventually returned with her to Earth. 148 149
Rachel later remembered studying Azarath Magic as a child and witnessing Azarath's destruction by Trigon. The recovered memories revealed that she is half human and half demon, carrying Trigon's bloodline. 149
Before joining Li Ang's household, Rachel lived with an adoptive mother and was exceptionally quiet and timid. In Detroit, she began seeing another version of herself in mirrors, suffered nightmares, and survived an attempted cult sacrifice when the cultist turned to ash. 52 60
Her magic publicly erupted during the conflict with Bane. Though Rachel feared Kara and Ciri would reject her, they accepted her as another extraordinary girl rather than treating her as a monster. 58 60 After her adoptive mother was murdered during her kidnapping, Li Ang took her in; Rachel later formally became his goddaughter. 94 105
Appearance
Rachel is a purple-haired girl whose appearance changes sharply when her demonic power surfaces. She later commonly conceals herself beneath a hooded uniform. 94 276
- Purple hair that can flutter without wind during magical outbursts. 94
- Eyes turn completely black when her magic destabilizes. 58 94
- Black patterns may spread across her face during severe loss of control. 58
- Her alternate form includes additional eyes on her forehead. 187
- Later hides bloodshot eyes beneath her hood due to Trigon's constant mental harassment. 276
Personality
Rachel initially presents as timid, withdrawn, and afraid of being seen as a “freak.” She hesitates to approach others, fears her powers, and is especially sensitive to rejection because of her frightening appearance and demonic heritage. 52 60 187
Her acceptance by Kara, Ciri, Li Ang, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the household gives her a strong attachment to chosen family. She repeatedly rejects Trigon's claim that her bloodline defines her, ultimately choosing Li Ang as her father and his household as her home. 181 252
Trauma and magical responsibility make her more reserved and mature over time. She is willing to leave school, abandon Earth temporarily, remain in Hell, and endure Trigon's voice if it protects others, but she ultimately accepts that self-isolation is not the same as belonging. 188 242 252
