Ch. 321The Seduced Profession Characteristic
Plot points and events
- Evan devastates Greenfire’s army of experimental monsters with Toxic Blood, which rapidly corrodes them. He then spreads viruses and spores, turning their remains into vivid green mushrooms and other plague growths.
- Greenfire and Byron No. 1 are shocked by the attack’s power and speculate that Evan’s Bloodthirsty Species trait—and a blessing from the Pale Moon—let him store and combine potion side effects, plagues, and viruses.
- Evan hurls the living growths at the two men. Greenfire drains their vitality with his own ability, enjoying their plague-tainted essence.
- Greenfire summons a Greenflame Dancer, whose curse targets Evan’s Demon Hunter Profession Characteristic by seducing it. The Panel reveals that the Characteristic resents Evan’s dismissal of it and claims to have found someone who understands it.
- The dancer’s descended-being status makes her immune to ordinary Beyonder Characteristics; she also destroys the Garden of Life’s children on contact. Her curse suppresses Evan’s Demon Hunter Sight, transformation, and Toxic Blood.
- Evan remains largely unfazed: his other Beyonder Characteristics do not depend on his profession, so the loss of those abilities does not disable him. He jokes that his supposedly “third-rate” Characteristic has proved useful after all.
Character developments and interactions
- Evan shows how potent and unconventional his abilities are, but also his composure and adaptability when his main combat tools are suppressed. His joking response contrasts with the increasingly bizarre danger around him.
- Greenfire shifts from greedily coveting Evan’s transforming Cane to fearing his power, then eagerly tries the plague growths’ vitality before using the dancer against him.
- Byron No. 1 stays more analytical and cautious, warning Greenfire about the growths and theorizing about Evan’s powers.
- Evan and his Demon Hunter Characteristic are revealed to have a strained, almost comic relationship: the Characteristic is offended by Evan and appears to have an independent will.
Significant themes
- Power and adaptation: Evan’s strength comes from combining abilities in unexpected ways, and his broader collection of traits lets him adapt when one is disabled.
- The costs and limits of power: Evan’s terrifying attacks draw on dangerous forces, while Greenfire’s curse demonstrates that even formidable abilities have counters.
- Bizarre personhood and agency: The Demon Hunter Characteristic behaves like a resentful, autonomous personality, blurring the line between power and identity.
- Monstrosity and decay: The battle’s vivid plague growths and Greenfire’s delight in consuming their vitality make corruption and grotesque vitality central to the scene.
