Background / History

Imu was one of the original Twenty Kings and secretly ruled the World Government from the Empty Throne for eight hundred years. The throne publicly symbolized equality and the absence of dictatorship, while Imu’s existence remained known only to select Celestial Dragons, the God’s Knights, and the Five Elders 137 214.

Eight centuries earlier, Nefertari Lily opposed Imu’s ambition to become an immortal dictator and scattered the Poneglyphs to preserve the world’s suppressed history. Imu erased Lily from official records and maintained hostility toward the Nefertari bloodline descended from her younger brother 263. Imu also retained memories of ancient adversaries including Davy Jones, Joy Boy, and Nika, repeatedly addressing Dawn as “Davy Jones” 177 464.

Appearance

Imu usually appeared as a slender figure concealed beneath flowing darkness and a black cloak, with the face obscured and only ringed or whirlpool-like eyes visible 213 214.

Personality

Imu is cold, authoritarian, and intensely protective of the eight-hundred-year order built around the World Government. He suppresses information that could undermine that order, including Dawn’s declaration of his existence and the deaths of Celestial Dragons during the Mary Geoise attack 137.

He treats followers as disposable instruments. Imu converted Marines and pirates into Blackening Soldiers, used Harald, Shamrock, Gunko, and Saturn as vessels, and abandoned Saturn once the Deep Sea Mark became a liability 177 240 383 400. Despite this detachment, Imu reacts angrily to insult, becomes destabilized by reminders of Lily, and is unwilling to accept Dawn’s defiance 177 464.

Dawn publicly named Imu as Nerona Imu, exposing the possibility that the Empty Throne had concealed an eight-hundred-year dictatorship 136. The World Government then censored the incident, while Imu’s existence began to spread doubt among Marines and officials 137.

Conflict Through Proxies

Imu initially fought Dawn through marked vessels rather than appearing directly. Harald’s resistance weakened Imu’s control, allowing Dawn to extract and destroy Harald’s Spirit Body, which inflicted pain on Imu remotely 177 178. Imu later negotiated with Dawn through Shamrock, trading three Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits to preserve the God’s Knight’s life before launching a surprise attack through him 239 240.

Hive Island and Saturn’s Death

Imu converted the forces on Hive Island into Blackening Soldiers and used Saint Saturn as his vessel. Dawn discovered that the Five Elders’ powers were Devil Fruit-based and exploited a brief moment of direct contact to suppress Imu’s control over Saturn 383 398 400. Imu finally confronted Dawn in person after losing the God’s Knights and Five Elders. Their battle lasted ten days and ten nights, devastating Mary Geoise, Red Port, the sea floor, and an unnamed New World sea 461 464.

The accumulated deaths of Imu’s marked servants caused severe backlash. Imu fled to Totto Land to seize the Infinite Energy reactor for Uranus, but Vivi’s resemblance to Lily further destabilized him 464. Dawn trapped Imu within a darkness sphere, suppressed his abilities, sealed him through physical contact, and stabbed him through the heart with Kikoku, ending his rule 464.
