Background / History
Yamato is Kaido’s biological daughter. Kaido raised her as a son after she adopted Kozuki Oden as an idol, imitated his mannerisms, and insisted on being recognized as a man. King and Queen addressed her as “Young Master Yamato” under Kaido’s orders. Her attachment to Oden began with Oden’s diary and became a means of resisting the future Kaido imposed on her. 232
When Dawn arrived on Onigashima, Yamato interpreted him as the man Kaido intended her to marry and immediately attacked. After a twelve-hour fight, Dawn removed her explosive shackles, defeated her, and challenged her identification with Oden. A story placing Yamato in Oden’s life led her to reconsider Oden’s choices and recognize that imitating him had become another form of confinement. 229 232
Yamato accepted Dawn’s marriage proposal and gradually began identifying herself as Yamato rather than Oden. She later publicly introduced herself as “Davy D. Yamato, Dawn’s wife.” 232 254
Appearance
Yamato is a tall woman with long hair that shifts from snowy white at the crown to emerald green and sea-blue at the tips. She has prominent red horns, an inherited sign of Ancient Giant bloodline. 229 265
- Wore a hannya mask, loose sleeveless samurai robe, red pleated skirt, and Kaido-like shimenawa rope when first encountered. 229
- Carries the pitch-black spiked kanabo A-Ken. 229
- Her Human-Beast Form manifests snow-white fur, wolf ears, a wolf tail, beastlike eyes, and extreme cold. 230 357
- Black Maria’s medicine altered her transformation so that her Human-Beast Form no longer changes her facial appearance. 357
Personality
Yamato is battle-hungry, proud, and intensely eager to test herself against powerful opponents. She sought to challenge Hancock to establish her own importance, was disappointed that Brogy and Dorry fell quickly, and expressed excitement at the prospect of fighting an opponent stronger than Kaido. 234 242 265
She is fiercely loyal to Dawn and the people she considers family. She defends Dawn’s reputation, refuses Whitebeard’s demand to surrender Reiju, and remains behind to protect David’s Revenge when Dawn is absent. 254 351 357
Despite her confidence, Yamato can be impulsive and overly forceful. After freezing and shattering Sarah’s group, she worried that she had killed enemies Dawn had wanted alive. 274
