In theory, the longer a fight dragged on, the greater Evil Thief's chances of winning.
Nameless had won mainly because the thing had no brains. It copied abilities outright without even trying to modify them.
If Evil Thief had turned into a giant python while retaining its draconic traits, it would have become a flood dragon. Snake-Slaying Night Hawk could kill a snake in an instant, but not a flood dragon. Nameless would have been in serious trouble.

Just as Nameless was about to move on, he noticed Evil Thief's corpse on the ground gradually turning to vapor. At last, it dissolved into the surrounding darkness.
He had the faint sense that the darkness had accepted him, and he could immediately see much farther. He also sensed that, once Evil Thief's power was purified, it gave rise to a new power. If he had to name it, he would call it "aspiration."
