The Looting Emperor retreated at tremendous speed. Though he had suspected something like this, actually seeing so many arms still made his scalp prickle.
The arms came in every size. The largest could seize stars and pluck the moon; the smallest were only a few centimeters long.
As they surged toward him, they looked like some luxuriant plant.
But if they caught him, the Looting Emperor reckoned even he would be torn to pieces in an instant, then devoured without a scrap left.
That was no alarmist exaggeration. It was a fact of the Compression Layer. The creatures here possessed terrifying strength; tearing apart a body like his would be effortless.
The creatures of the Compression Layer were not creatures in the conventional sense.
Most had no discernible food chain. Many ate only once every few thousand years, and their births often depended on countless coincidences.
One might, for example, happen to arise beside a substance rich in energy, absorb that energy, and slowly grow.
As a result, many creatures had no instinct to feed. Their so-called attacks happened only because someone was nearby and got swept up in their unconscious activity.
The Looting Emperor realized these arms were likely just such a creature. He had no intention of fighting them. Instead, he put all his effort into getting away, out of their reach.
He guessed that a severed arm had happened to land beside some high-energy substance. Though its owner had died, the arm itself had become active and mutated into this bizarre form.
