Background / History

Yu Xiaogang returned to Notting Academy during Tang San and Bai Ye’s enrollment. Drawn by both children’s Innate Full Soul Power, he hoped that training them into Titled Douluo would prove his theories and secure his reputation. He verified their Spirit Hall certificates, intervened against the academy doorman, and correctly deduced that Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass and Innate Full Soul Power indicated Twin Martial Souls. 1

Tang San accepted him as teacher after Yu Xiaogang explained twin and mutated martial souls. Bai Ye refused him twice, objecting to Tang San treating a teacher as a father and dismissing Yu Xiaogang’s authority; the rejection left Yu Xiaogang angry and determined to see Bai Ye fail without his guidance. 1

After Bai Ye repeatedly defeated Tang San, Yu Xiaogang became Tang San’s principal source of reassurance. He encouraged Tang San to treat the losses as motivation, discovered Tang San’s Clear Sky Hammer, and inferred that Tang Hao was the Clear Sky Douluo. Tang Hao later approved Tang San’s choice of teacher while warning Yu Xiaogang not to overstep his role as Tang San’s father. 3 4

Yu Xiaogang’s standing at Notting Academy collapsed when Bai Ye challenged the origin and precision of the “423-year” first-ring limit in the Ten Core Theories of Martial Souls. Yu Xiaogang admitted that the data came from Spirit Hall materials but could not answer Bai Ye’s accusation that he had claimed others’ research as his own; Headmaster Yuri subsequently ordered him to begin teaching classes. 5

He continued to insist that Bai Ye’s Millennium First Ring was impossible until Bai Ye absorbed it successfully. Later, Yu Xiaogang supported Tang San’s attempt to absorb a Millennium Datura Snake ring despite having no proven precedent for pairing a beast-type ring with Blue Silver Grass. The attempt nearly killed Tang San, leaving Yu Xiaogang guilt-ridden and suicidal until Tang San forgave him after Tang Hao saved him. 6 7 8

Unable to tolerate regular teaching at Notting Academy, Yu Xiaogang eventually left with Tang San; Xiao Wu accompanied them. He is deeply paternal toward Tang San, consoling him after defeats, calling him “Little San,” and physically shielding him from Zhao Wuji despite the overwhelming difference in strength. 4 18 His protectiveness is complicated by pride and overconfidence: he repeatedly frames Tang San as destined to surpass Bai Ye, even when evidence contradicts him. 4 6 10
