Background
Xiao Du began as Mu Yun's Weedle and trained alongside Namikaze long before becoming the team's principal attacker. Early practice focused on String Shot, simulated battles, and the safe control of Poison Sting; Mu Yun kept Antidotes ready because poorly controlled poison training could injure its user 30 32.
After evolving into Kakuna and then Beedrill, Xiao Du retained an intense desire to train even while immobilized by his cocoon body 33 35. Repeated combat, move practice, and Mu Yun's system-based enhancements transformed him from a comparatively foolish Weedle into a battle-hardened Pokémon capable of acting independently 206 298.
Appearance
Xiao Du is a golden-yellow Beedrill with calm scarlet eyes and silvery-white stingers. His presence has become visibly more intimidating after extensive combat experience 206.
- Golden carapace, which became more radiant upon reaching Elite Four Level 512
- Crimson or scarlet eyes 206 512
- Silver-white stingers used for X-Scissor, Poison Sting, and close-range strikes 206 224
- A mature, battle-ready aura that contrasts with his playful behavior around Mu Yun 206 508
Personality
Xiao Du is diligent, serious about training, and fiercely responsive to Mu Yun's commands. Even as Kakuna, he was frustrated by being unable to move because it prevented him from training 35. His accumulated combat experience made him decisive and fearless, to the point that Mu Yun can let him begin battles without direct commands 206 298.
Despite his combat maturity, Xiao Du is affectionate with Mu Yun and still shows a childish side in private. Around the rest of the team, he takes on an older-brother role, including being entrusted with the care of the newly hatched Xiao Yan 359 508. He also fights with the personal ambition of restoring Beedrill's glory and becoming the king of Bug Pokémon 226.
Abilities & Skills
Critical Hit Trait
Xiao Du's defining Trait turns every attack into a critical hit. Its second enhancement made those critical hits deal five times normal damage, or 750% of standard power 341.
- Originally replaced Sniper during his first Trait enhancement and raised critical-hit damage to 300% 97
- Combines with vital-point strikes to massively amplify moves such as Pursuit and Assurance 224
- Allows even resisted attacks to defeat stronger opponents when paired with speed, move proficiency, and type bonuses 179
Focus Energy and Swords Dance
Focus Energy is Xiao Du's primary setup technique, while Swords Dance further escalates his physical offense.
- Mastered Focus Energy improves flight speed, energy mobilization, and physical strength 97 102
- Can be activated almost instantly, allowing him to launch attacks before an opponent's Trainer can finish issuing commands 298
- Mastered Swords Dance raises physical power by 100% and speed by 50% for a period 341
- Mu Yun considers the combination of five layers of Focus Energy and Swords Dance one of Xiao Du's most destructive attack patterns 341
- Extended setup is generally unnecessary against weaker targets, while lengthy battles can expose Xiao Du's stamina limits 224 298
X-Scissor
X-Scissor is Xiao Du's signature Bug-type finishing move.
- He used it against Wang He's Steelix despite the enormous defensive gap, leaving faint marks after successive strikes 85
- Five attacks against Steelix raised its Perfected proficiency from 12/1000 to 60/1000, but nearly exhausted Xiao Du's energy reserves 85
- Defeated a newly evolved Level 21 Gyarados in one blow despite Gyarados resisting Bug-type attacks 179
- Instantly knocked out Shiftry through a critical hit, vital-point strike, and Bug's fourfold type advantage 298
- Secured Mu Yun's provincial tournament championship by incapacitating Lü Jiayi's Heracross before it could recover 226
Poison Techniques
Xiao Du possesses unusually toxic and corrosive poison, which Mu Yun generally avoids using in official battles unless necessary 85.
- Poison Sting — Failed to pierce Steelix directly, but the dispersed venom adhered to and corroded its metal body 85
- Twineedle + Poison Sting — Used as a close-range combination when direct damage could not overcome Ceruledge's armor 224
- Venoshock — Learned at Mastered proficiency; deals doubled damage to already poisoned or toxin-affected targets 131 132
- Poison Jab — Learned at Mastered proficiency after reaching Champion-level potential 234
- His poison could damage even Elite Four-level opponents when amplified by high Poison potency, Poison-type power bonuses, and critical-hit damage 426
Harden and Defensive Traits
Although built primarily for offense, Xiao Du has exceptional defensive tools.
- Harden activates faster than Wang He's specially trained Steelix could activate its own defensive technique 84
- Two uses of Harden gave him defense comparable to a Veteran-level physical-wall Pokémon during Wang He's Sandstorm assessment 84
- Divine Baptism provides 90% damage reduction and immunity to negative statuses beneath Divine Power 426 427
- His natural physical defense and stamina remain weaknesses in prolonged close combat, especially against durable opponents 224
Pursuit and U-turn
Xiao Du uses these moves to control range and capitalize on his speed.
- Pursuit rapidly advanced to Perfected proficiency during Ferrothorn-supported training, improving its strength, speed, attack speed, and Dark-type power 97
- Critical hits and vital-point strikes can raise Pursuit's effective power to 300% 224
- U-turn enables high-speed strikes, evasive repositioning, baiting, and legal switching without consuming a normal Trainer substitution 131 132
Hidden Power: Bug
Perfected Hidden Power: Bug greatly improved the quality of Xiao Du's Bug-type energy and served as a key step toward his Elite Four breakthrough 508.
- Raises all Bug-type move power by 200% 508
- Caused Bug-type energy to visibly gather around him as pale-green particles and wind 508
- Led Mu Yun to conclude that Hidden Power helps unlock the barrier to Elite Four Level 508
Break All Laws
Break All Laws is Xiao Du's Elite Four-level suppressive ability 535.
- Suppresses opponents' held-item spaces, status buffs, and ability effects 535
- Can interfere with energy mobilization; Patrick compared it to an amplified version of his Brain Control Wave 535
- Reduced Patrick's processing power by 30% even after Patrick's second brain enhancement 535
- May prevent ordinary Pokémon below Elite Four Level from releasing moves or mobilizing energy effectively 535
Story Role / Major Arcs
Wang He's Assessment
Xiao Du's training assessment with Wang He established his abnormal defensive and offensive potential. He endured intensified Sandstorm conditions, demonstrated Harden faster than Steelix's, and revealed X-Scissor to an increasingly bewildered Wang He 84 85.
Provincial Tournament
At the Songjiang River, Xiao Du one-shot a newly evolved Gyarados that should have resisted his Bug-type attack 179. He later defeated Lin Youqi's Grovyle, Liu Hesheng's Ceruledge through poison-based tactics, and Lü Jiayi's Heracross to win the Provincial Tournament for Mu Yun 206 224 226.
Training Camp and Elite Breakthrough
Xiao Du reached Elite Level by independently defeating Shiftry, then continued overwhelming lower-difficulty opponents while Mu Yun redirected additional experience toward Namikaze 298. Following further enhancement and battle training, he attained Totem Level, Master-level potential, and ultimately Elite Four Level through military sparring and relentless move repetition 341 469 511.

- Wang He — Trainer and evaluator who arranged Steelix sparring sessions and recognized Xiao Du's extraordinary move control, defense, and poison 83 85.
- Xiao Xin — Younger teammate whom Xiao Du helps guide; his hardened demeanor softened upon her arrival 232 567.
- Xiao Yan — Younger teammate placed in Xiao Du's care shortly after hatching because Mu Yun considers Xiao Du mature and dependable 359.
