Background / History

Fan Sheng teaches Tiger-Subduing Fist to Celebration Hall’s apprentices and explains its cultivation requirements. When the starving Deng Qing tries to secure food by knocking himself unconscious against a pillar, Fan sees through the act but relays Li Dashan’s offer of work and meals. He later verifies Deng’s breakthrough, registers him as a Named Disciple, and explains the costs and dangers of advancing at the hall 1 2 4 5 6.

Initially a Named Disciple himself, Fan earns his living by supervising apprentices and performing miscellaneous duties. He introduces Deng to the distinction between Internal and External Cultivation Methods and takes him to Tu Wei to study the Violet Palace Method 6.

During the Donghuang Cult’s riot, Fan reaches North Warehouse with several Celebration Hall disciples after fighting through the disorder. He commends Deng Qing, Li Cheng, Zhou Tie, and Wang Wei for preserving the Redwood Powder, then leaves Deng to guard the warehouse while taking the others to pursue the cult fighters 10 11.

After Deng kills the wanted Donghuang Cult fighter Mountain-Crossing Wind, Fan helps divide the credit among the men involved. His share helps him become an Initiate Disciple. He continues to advise Deng as food provisions tighten, warning him that connections affect hall decisions but that forcing a breakthrough without enough Qi-Blood could damage his foundation 12 20.

Fan uses his new status to secure Deng a place on the medicine-retrieval expedition to Blackwind Ravine. He gives Deng his old Leather Armor and recommends renting Silver Crow Handwraps to reduce the danger of fighting armed opponents barehanded. During the dispute with the Golden Saber Sect, he encourages Deng to face Song Que and obtains Zhang Yan’s public assurance that the hall will reward victory, cover injuries, and impose no punishment for defeat. After Deng wins, Fan celebrates with him and later delivers the promised Medicinal Bath voucher and ten taels 13 14 17 19.

When Celebration Hall reduces its provisions, Fan arranges in advance for Zhang Yan to support Deng if he reaches Skin Refining Second Layer. He waits up late on the night of Deng’s breakthrough, then immediately goes out through the snow to secure Zhang Yan’s intervention. He subsequently announces Deng’s inclusion as an additional Attendant under special circumstances 25.

Fan suffers a left-shoulder injury before the campaign against the Donghuang Cult strongholds. During the Mountain God Temple battle, his exchange with Monk Tang reopens the wound, though his saber blow also forces the monk backward. The injury has mostly healed by the time he later visits Deng 33 34 38.

Fan lends Deng thirty taels for cultivation and later helps arrange a place for him among Li Dashan’s attendants at a Dongting County banquet. Deng repays the loan after reaching the Third Layer. When Li unexpectedly promotes Deng directly to Personal Disciple, Fan initially struggles with the sudden change in their standing; a private conversation restores their closeness 38 42 51 52.

His discomfort is not simply jealousy over Deng surpassing him: he suspects that Deng privately sought Li Dashan’s favor without confiding in him. Once Deng denies this and affirms that Fan will always be his senior brother, Fan accepts his sincerity and agrees to research the experiences of Li Dashan’s previous Personal Disciples 52.

Fan subsequently investigates Zhang Quan, initially known to Deng as Zhang Bo, at Deng’s request and finds records of Li Dashan’s former Personal Disciples. He copies the important details of eight disciples into a booklet rather than removing the original records. His investigation identifies Zhang Quan as a former frontier-army cook who began cultivating in his thirties and eventually reached the Bone-Forging Realm; Fan repeatedly advises reconciliation if the dispute is only a misunderstanding 89 90.

When Zhang Quan comes to Celebration Hall demanding an explanation for the Black Jade sale, Li Dashan sends Fan to fetch Deng. Fan returns with Deng’s farewell letter and reads it aloud before the assembled group. He becomes visibly indignant while reading its account of Zhang Quan’s threats and coercion. After Li Dashan brings Deng back, Fan and Zhang Yan welcome him home, share a meal and wine with him, and discuss the approaching Battle of Liangshan 92 94.

Before Deng leaves for Liangshan, Fan rides after the departing party to lend him his own Soft Armor. Explaining that Everjoy County is comparatively safe while Liangshan is dangerous, he insists that Deng accept it and return it to him in person. He then rides back to Everjoy County 102.

Personality

Fan is candid about both opportunity and risk. He tells Deng when hall politics make an allowance unlikely, cautions him against reckless cultivation, and urges him to seek help from friends or their master when facing a stronger enemy 20 89. His support is practical: he offers instruction, money, information, introductions, and protective gear 2 38 42 90 102.

He also has a playful manner with Deng, joking about his reliance on pig offal and accepting their friendship after Deng’s promotion unsettles him 45 52.

Fan recognizes diligence and hardship rather than dismissing progress as luck. After confirming Deng’s first breakthrough, he tells him that only Deng himself knows how much suffering it required. Deng later regards him as honest and kind 5 52.

His generosity is tempered by practical judgment. The thirty-tael loan both helps a friend and reflects his confidence in Deng’s future after hearing that Deng killed Monk Tang. Although Fan has a family to support, he is reluctant to let Deng reimburse every expense incurred on his behalf 38 42 89.

He values courage as well as caution. After Deng declines Song Que’s public challenge, Fan worries that the refusal has harmed Deng’s prospects with Li Dashan, arguing that a martial artist may lose but should not lack the courage to compete 49.
