Appearance
- White robes and mask: Her robes are described as whiter than snow, with an even whiter mask. She keeps the mask on even while cultivating alone 132 146.
- Black hair: A strand of black hair hangs beside her ear, which she twirls during a discussion of the camp murders 133.
- Hands: Her hands are described as pale and delicate despite the destructive force of her palm strikes 161.
- Killing aura: After fighting on the front line, her surrounding Sha Qi becomes noticeably heavier, making others reluctant to approach 160.
Personality
Jian Ruyu is blunt, proud, and quick to confront people who provoke her. She is initially poor at verbal sparring with Zhao Feiyan, but readily joins in when Deng Qing turns Zhao’s insults against her. Appeals to rank and military discipline do little to restrain her when she believes someone has overstepped 124 161.
She favors tempering martial skill through conflict and dislikes Deng Qing’s tendency to retreat into safety after taking a risk. Nevertheless, she distinguishes courage from recklessness: she ultimately tells him to decide for himself when to hide and when to advance, explaining that her protection is meant to give him confidence rather than replace his judgment 148 162.
Her stern treatment of Deng Qing coexists with considerable generosity. She recognizes his theatrical flattery, teases him about it, and still provides instruction, recommendations, and protection. When renewed military demands threaten her promise to let him cultivate peacefully, she offers to escort him out of the Desolate Soil herself, despite the pressure this would place on her 133 135 151.
She also enjoys poetry. A couplet quoted by Deng Qing moves her enough that she searches multiple poetry collections for its source before finally asking him about it 152.
Abilities & Skills
Acupoint Sealing
Jian Ruyu can immobilize opponents by projecting force from her fingertips 161.
- Seals the acupoints of Feng Xiuquan’s thirteen personal guards in rapid succession without stopping her advance.
- Strikes through their encircling weapon formation from a distance.
- All thirteen guards are at Bone Tempering Fourth Layer 161.
Palm Techniques and Force Control
Her palm strikes combine overwhelming power with precise control over the force entering an opponent’s body 148 161 162.
- Ranged strikes: Blasts through Huang Bingyao’s attempted defense and throws him out of her tent with a palm strike through the air 148.
- Direct confrontation: Drives Furnace Realm Fourth Layer Feng Xiuquan back five steps while remaining unmoved; even the ground beneath her stays intact 161.
- Internal injury: Shatters Huang Changhe’s chest and damages his heart meridians with a concealed burst of force. She estimates that even a Ten-Ingredient Great Tonic Pill will not restore him in less than three to five days 161 162.
- Area control: Sends intersecting palm forces toward Deng Qing to cut off his escape routes while testing him 152.
Movement and Weapon Disruption
Jian Ruyu moves quickly enough to intercept fleeing experts and disrupt groups before they can respond 147 161.
- Overtakes Huang Changhe after his evasive footwork carries him thirty zhang away 161.
- Sends the surrounding guards’ weapons flying with a sweep of her sleeve 147.
- Bursts through a wooden cabin wall while rushing to rescue Deng Qing from a beast tide 132.
Martial Instruction
She teaches the Elephant-Throwing Method and can assess its execution through brief recorded exchanges 135.
- Elephant-Throwing Method: Cultivates both the internal and external body, improving strength and physical resilience 132 170.
- Cultivation guidance: Advises Deng Qing on widening his meridians and using Martial Origin Pills; she credits his results to his own ability rather than her advice alone 124.
- Roaming Dragon Steps: Offers this movement technique when Deng Qing identifies weaknesses in his mobility 135.
- Access to specialist instruction: Persuades Old Han to teach Deng Qing the more demanding Collapse Step 135 138.
Cultivation and Diagnostic Knowledge
- Five-Colored Mystic Light: While meditating, circulates a five-colored light from her abdomen around her body. It can gather into silk-like strands or spread into a gauze-like form; its combat function is not shown 132.
- Pulse examination: Checks Deng Qing for signs of Wasteland Blood contamination and finds none 152.
- Mutation risks: Explains that improperly refining Wasteland Blood can transform humans much as Wasteland Qi transforms animals 152.
- Environmental limits: Cannot safely enter the deepest concentrations of Wasteland Qi. She explains that abundant Qi-Blood makes higher-realm cultivators especially vulnerable to a Qi-Blood Storm 152 162.
Equipment & Items
- White mask — Worn in public and during private cultivation 132 138.
- Jade pendant — Trembles and rings to alert her to urgent Deployment Office business 132.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Enrollment Recommendation
Jian Ruyu chooses Deng Qing as her first enrollment recommendation candidate. Zhao Feiyan challenges the choice by bringing Chen Xiaotian to compete for the remaining recommendation, expecting his reputation and ability to secure victory. Deng Qing defeats him decisively, preserving Jian Ruyu’s recommendation and surprising her with his recent advancement to Bone Tempering Two 124.
Afterward, she directs Deng Qing to serve as an assistant administrator in the Desolate Soil, explaining that his performance will support his enrollment assessment 124.
Inspector Assessment and Beast Tide
When Deng Qing records no points during his patrols and claims that Huang Yunfan has threatened him, Jian Ruyu explicitly asserts that he has her backing. She warns that failing to become a Senior Inspector will damage his prospects and refuses to accept intimidation as an excuse for inaction 130.
After learning that an Inspector has attracted a beast tide with Wasteland Beast flesh and blood, she immediately rushes out and later carries Deng Qing back to camp. She discovers that his apparent critical injuries are an act and knowingly maintains the pretense while he settles his conflict with Huang Yunfan and Song Wuji 132 133.
Deng Qing’s recordings subsequently establish his second-place Inspector result. Recognizing his rapid mastery of the Elephant-Throwing Method, Jian Ruyu accepts one hundred Merit Vouchers from him and arranges advanced movement instruction. Securing Old Han’s cooperation requires fifty vouchers and a personal favor; Old Han later admits that he underestimated Deng Qing’s talent 135 138.
Front-Line Conflict and Wasteland Vein Credit
Jian Ruyu contributes directly to fighting the Donghuang Cult. Old Han states that the command forces have claimed five kills after she severely wounded the cult elders involved. She also questions how the cult has matched the Command Center’s success in pinning Wasteland Veins despite the latter’s access to the Martial Dao Institute’s latest research 146.
When Deng Qing reveals that he pinned the seventh vein’s tail, she warns him that others could steal the achievement by obtaining his blood for verification. Rather than allow the Command Center to dictate terms, she solicits competing offers and negotiates with Feng Xiuquan 148.
| Benefit secured for Deng Qing | Details |
|---|---|
| Cultivation pills | Ten Great Fortune Pills and five Azure Fish Pills 148 |
| Cultivation room | Access to a dedicated Cultivation Room 148 |
| Official recognition | A commandant’s Honorary Merit Rank at the Principal Eighth Rank 148 |
| Zhang Yan’s reassignment | Arranges a transfer to the Deployment Office, though Zhang Yan later declines it 148 149 |
| Safer duties | Accommodates Deng Qing’s request to tend Strange Horses rather than continue dangerous missions 148 149 |
When Deng Qing’s blood becomes necessary for the next operation, she negotiates access to the Xiao Family’s baleful veins as compensation. She also gives him the genuine option of leaving under her protection rather than participating 151.
Public Protection and the Underground Palace
After Deng Qing reports an ambush by suspected Donghuang Cult members and Huang Changhe’s possible involvement, Jian Ruyu acknowledges that his deductions do not constitute usable evidence. She nevertheless confronts Huang Changhe publicly, immobilizes Feng Xiuquan’s guards, repels the commander, and gravely injures Huang Changhe 160 161.
She later explains that the public display was intended to establish a visible deterrent against anyone targeting Deng Qing. Old Han warns that her conduct may bring complaints to the higher authorities, but she refuses to judge her support solely by whether Deng Qing is worth the political risk 162.
At the Nameless Underground Palace, she explains the remaining Wasteland Qi hazards and encourages Deng Qing to enter once the route becomes accessible to Bone-Forging cultivators. She stays outside as he joins Xiao Jinglin and the other entrants 162.
Relationships
- Deng Qing — Student, recommendation candidate, and protected junior. Their relationship develops into substantial mutual trust, with Deng Qing turning to her first over his Wasteland Vein achievement and later threats to his life 124 148 160.
- Old Han — Fellow senior figure and frequent collaborator. She pressures him into teaching Deng Qing, while he supports her against the Command Center and questions the risks she takes for her student 138 146 162.
- Zhao Feiyan — Rival elder who mocks her and contests her recommendation through Chen Xiaotian 124.
- Feng Xiuquan — Wartime superior and recurring political opponent. His attempts to pressure her, appropriate achievements, and restrain her protection of Deng Qing culminate in a public clash 146 148 161.
- Huang Changhe — Hostile elder whom she suspects of coveting Deng Qing’s achievement and later confronts over his alleged involvement in targeting him 148 160 161.
- Xiao Jinglin — Introduces him to Deng Qing before their joint mission after arranging access to the Xiao Family’s baleful veins 151.
