"A baby?" Bugard shook his head. "I don't remember anything about that. In the stories my grandfather told me, the person he mentioned most often was a lady called Marnia. She owned the Black Star and was the wife of an important figure."
"An important figure?"
"Yes."
A reminiscent look crossed Bugard's face. "Grandfather once said that the esteemed lady was the wife of an important figure. That gentleman was a descendant of one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who followed Emperor Roselle."
So there was a connection like that.
Hmm.
If he was a descendant of one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, then it made sense for Marnia to possess Roselle's Treasure.
Sifa gathered his thoughts and continued, "Then did Mr. Selis ever mention any descendants of Lady Marnia?"
"Lady Marnia had descendants?" Bugard asked in return, then shook his head. "No, I don't remember anything like that. Grandfather never mentioned it to me."
"He might have told my father, but unfortunately, my father is no longer alive."
Sifa already knew this, so he posed another question. "Does Mr. Selis have any other descendants? Did your grandfather have any brothers or sisters?"
After all, Bugard was Selis's great-grandson, with too many years separating them. If Bugard's grandfather had any siblings who were still alive, Sifa should be able to learn more from them.
Bugard smiled. "Unfortunately, my grandfather had no brothers or sisters. He was an orphan. My late father told me that Great-grandfather adopted him when he was very young."
"Adopted?"
"Yes."
Bugard nodded gently. "Apparently, Great-grandmother couldn't have children because of some health issues, so she and Great-grandfather adopted a lucky child from an orphanage. That was my grandfather."
This took Sifa by surprise. Bugard's grandfather had actually been adopted. In other words,
