But once they tried to reduce its destructive power and improve its stability, things got difficult. To keep the range wide enough, Mawile pushed its energy output to the limit, yet neither its power nor its stability met the standards Baimu had set.

Altaria's Draco Meteor, for example, looked like fireworks amid the Mist. Touching it caused only a tolerable burning sensation, and it wouldn't suddenly explode into a cloud of choking white smoke.

By comparison, Mawile's Fairy Wind was strong enough to send people staggering, or even blow them clean away.

The move's shape and color made the difference obvious.

Fairy Wind whipped up a gale while producing deep-pink wisps of energy. Those wisps were what damaged the opponent.

Baimu wanted the wisps to disperse into pink points of light, making the move more stable and easier to follow with another. This wasn't some wild fantasy. He had seen it done before.

To that end, Mawile watched the demonstration video again and again, then practiced it just as many times.

After all, this was only the opening move.

Fairy Wind still had to flow into Magnet Rise to lift Mawile into the air, then Fire Fang released while spinning. Making all three moves connect smoothly without a break was the second challenge.

In battle, the aim was to put everything into each blow, making sure every punch, kick, and bite delivered maximum power.

Pokémon Contests were different.

Coordinators often limited a move's energy output for the sake of its appearance, sacrificing power so they could transition promptly to the next move and keep the performance pleasing to the eye.
