Status in Orre

Wild Pokémon are exceptionally scarce in inland Orre, where most Trainers must rely on costly imported Pokémon. This scarcity makes acquiring even one partner a major barrier for poor residents of Pyrite Town. 1

Pokémon are expensive to maintain properly. Food, nutritional supplements, massages, and post-battle treatment make a poorly funded Trainer likely to neglect or replace partners rather than raise them responsibly. Strong, already-trained Pokémon consequently command high prices in Pyrite Town. 1 11

Pokémon are also treated as commercial assets. Chansey was captured from the wild by hunters and sold after being confined and returned by previous buyers, while competitors in the Hound Team match seized, exchanged, and sold one another's Poké Balls. 22 23 45

Individuality and autonomy

Pokémon are intelligent individuals capable of understanding speech, judging human behavior, and acting independently of their Trainers.

• Aron understood Baimu's request for help in the Jade Mine and agreed to rescue unconscious participants in exchange for an iron ingot. 6
• Rhyhorn ignored Shibata's order to kill Cheng Hong, demonstrating that possession does not guarantee obedience. 5
• Aron reacted fearfully to Baimu's Poké Ball after the mine escape, suggesting trauma connected to a former Trainer or abandonment. 7

Pokémon employ individualized move sets rather than a universal skill list. Aron's known techniques include Iron Defense, Dig, Iron Head, Endeavor, and Rock Tomb, while Vibrava uses moves including Dragon Breath, Earth Power, Bug Buzz, Sand Tomb, and Rock Slide. 12 25 26

• Dig enabled Aron to evade Graveler's Rollout and launch surprise attacks from underground. 16 17
• Rock Tomb restricts movement and lowers an opponent's speed, making it valuable despite being less destructive than Rock Slide. 26
• Dragon Breath allowed Vibrava to paralyze opponents during coordinated ambushes. 34

Healing and support

Chansey's support-oriented move set is unusually valuable in an environment where most Trainers prioritize direct offense. 24

• Heal Pulse restores injured allies and helped Chansey recognize that she could contribute without hurting anyone. 23
• Soft-Boiled allowed Chansey to survive concentrated attacks during the battle with Jian. 38

Relationship with Trainers

• Baimu — Treats Aron, Chansey, and Vibrava as partners whose trust must be earned. His willingness to rescue Aron, accommodate Chansey's fear of combat, and negotiate rather than command Vibrava shapes his team’s loyalty. 9 23 24
• Shibata — Fails to establish a genuine bond with Rhyhorn, which ignores his order and later becomes a liability during his pursuit of Baimu. 5 9

Role in the Hound Team competition

Baimu's team uses specialized roles: Aron serves as a durable front-line defender, Vibrava provides aerial mobility and long-range offense, and Chansey supplies healing, sleep-based control, and later psychic restraint. 25 34 40

Aron's evolution into Lairon becomes the decisive turning point against Jian's drug-enhanced Bewear and Mightyena. Lairon immediately displays greater stability, speed, strength, appetite, and territorial instincts after evolving. 40 44 50
