Background and History

Baimu arrives in Orre as a sixteen-year-old orphaned and undocumented transmigrator. He begins with little money, education, influence, or access to Pokémon. In Pyrite Town, he works as an outer member of the Quicksand Team, accepting the organization’s protection despite its criminal activities and exploitative hierarchy. He refuses to keep money earned directly through intimidation, revealing a moral boundary that he struggles to preserve within the organization. 1

The activation of the Trainer Life Simulator gives Baimu his first realistic path toward becoming a Trainer. His first simulated life follows a Bug Catcher who earns only three Badges before the Indigo League begins. Baimu studies the run’s failures and chooses a Pokémon clue and String Shot as rewards, discovering that simulator rewards can influence later attempts. 2

Baimu’s second major challenge is the Quicksand Team’s team-member assessment. During the trial, he protects a frail participant from Shibata and later risks his own chance of passing to rescue injured competitors. He encounters an abandoned Aron, initially treats it cautiously, and eventually gains its cooperation by offering iron. 3 5 6

When Shibata’s violence triggers a confrontation in the mine, Baimu helps Aron rescue the injured. He later returns for Aron after it is badly wounded by Rhyhorn, carrying it out through smoke, collapsing tunnels, and repeated attacks. His refusal to place Aron in a Poké Ball without knowing whether it would consent becomes an early foundation of their partnership. 8 9

After the assessment, Baimu becomes an official Quicksand Team member and joins the Sand Group. He exchanges the organization’s Pokémon reward for money so he can feed and rehabilitate Aron. He also begins attending the Quicksand Team’s literacy class, intending to overcome his limited education and eventually escape Pyrite Town. 11 12 18

Baimu’s first direct test from Sand Group leadership comes from Cang Zhilang, who forces him to fight Machamp. Baimu is defeated almost immediately but surrenders before Aron is seriously injured. Cang then offers him a chance to become a Squad Leader by participating in the coming battle against the Hound Team. 13 14

To prepare for the competition, Baimu obtains Chansey as a healer and temporarily accepts Vibrava from Liu Ge. He trains the three Pokémon for unrestricted wilderness combat, emphasizing coordination and specialized roles rather than raw strength. Aron serves as the durable close-range fighter, Vibrava as mobile ranged support, and Chansey as the team’s healer and control specialist. 21 26

During the televised competition, Baimu relies on ambushes, disguises, smoke, terrain, radar manipulation, and psychological pressure. He rescues Quicksand Team members while defeating several Hound Team opponents. His battle with Jian becomes the turning point: after defeating Jian and learning that Otsuka has been tortured, Baimu chooses a prolonged punishment rather than a quick death. 32 41

Baimu later rescues Otsuka and encourages him to pursue education and leave Pyrite Town. The Quicksand Team wins the competition, and Baimu’s tips, bonuses, captured Pokémon, and sales make him wealthy by local standards. He honors his promise to Huo Wu, sells other captured Pokémon through negotiation, and refuses to sell Jian’s three drug-affected Pokémon. 43 45 49

Liu Ge subsequently accepts Baimu into his faction and appoints him Squad Leader. The promotion gives Baimu protection, money, housing, transportation, and the authority to build a squad, but also draws him deeper into the Quicksand Team’s factional politics. 46 48

Appearance

Baimu is a physically strong teenager who is notably taller and more imposing than many people his age. He has black hair and is capable of carrying multiple injured people through the mine despite exhaustion and injury. During Quicksand Team operations, he commonly wears the organization’s uniform and uses masks or other equipment when concealment is necessary. 3 7 46

  • Sixteen years old at the beginning of the story. 1
  • Taller than Shibata and physically stronger than most people his age. 3
  • Black-haired. 46
  • Frequently keeps Aron outside its Poké Ball. 12
  • Battles in environments where Trainers are expected to remain close enough to be physically attacked alongside their Pokémon. 15

Personality

Baimu is practical, cautious, and highly adaptable. He evaluates danger, money, social status, and possible escape routes before making decisions. His first priority is survival, but he repeatedly acts against his immediate interests to rescue injured people or Pokémon. 1 6 8 9

He is analytical rather than blindly courageous. Baimu uses surrender when a fight cannot be won, admits when he misjudges a situation, and prefers traps or positioning to direct contests of strength. His confidence becomes more forceful after joining the Sand Group, where he uses intimidation and calculated threats to prevent others from exploiting him. 14 17

Baimu has a strong but flexible moral code. He dislikes extortion, values honest exchanges, keeps his promises, and refuses to sell Jian’s drug-affected Pokémon. At the same time, the brutality of Pyrite Town gradually hardens him; his decision to prolong Jian’s death shows how vengeance can coexist with his compassion. 1 41 45 49

Education becomes one of Baimu’s main tools for independence. He attends literacy classes despite mockery and encourages Otsuka to seek schooling, viewing literacy as necessary for travel, maps, communication, and escape from Pyrite Town’s narrow social order. 17 18 43

Abilities and Skills

Tactical Planning

Baimu excels at turning unfavorable situations into opportunities through preparation and deception.

  • Uses terrain, smoke, light, height, and underground movement to avoid stronger opponents. 8 9 32
  • Exploits enemy assumptions through disguises, bait, false weakness, and staged injuries. 33 35
  • Relocates repeatedly to manipulate radar patterns and draw opponents into prepared traps. 36
  • Studies enemy behavior and changes plans when an approach fails. 17 37 40

Physical Strength and Endurance

Baimu is unusually strong for his age and can continue operating while injured or exhausted.

  • Protects weaker participants during the assessment. 3
  • Carries two injured people while helping Cheng Hong escape the mine. 7 8
  • Overpowers Otsuka in a physical confrontation. 15
  • Survives the desert competition while conserving water and caring for injured companions. 42 44

His physical ability is still far below that of high-level Pokémon and faction leaders; Machamp defeats him in two punches even while heavily restricting itself. 14

Pokémon Command

Baimu develops quickly as a Trainer despite beginning with no formal battling experience.

  • Commands Aron through defensive, underground, and close-range tactics. 16 17
  • Combines Aron’s Dig and Rock Tomb with Vibrava’s aerial attacks and Chansey’s support abilities. 24 26 32 41
  • Protects Chansey while allowing it to develop confidence at its own pace. 35 36 39
  • Treats Pokémon as partners with independent wishes rather than disposable tools. 9 12 22 49

Psychological Manipulation

Baimu uses fear and uncertainty to control hostile situations, particularly when direct combat is dangerous.

  • Forces a hostile Quicksand Team group into cooperation by threatening to sabotage their battle. 15
  • Coerces Huo Wu into operating the radar and acting as bait. 33 35
  • Uses opponents’ attachment to their Pokémon and their fear of death to secure surrender or information. 32 34 41

Pokémon Sensitivity

Baimu can sometimes perceive Pokémon that others fail to notice. He hears Chansey’s cry from inside a cage even though Otsuka cannot, allowing him to find and choose the Pokémon. 22

Pokémon Partners and Team

  • Aron/Lairon — Baimu’s first partner from the mine. Initially abandoned and suspicious of Poké Balls, Aron gradually develops deep trust in Baimu. It learns Endeavor and Rock Tomb, reaches Level 33, and later evolves into Lairon during the battle with Jian. 5 12 26 41
  • Chansey — A Level 30 healer purchased after being returned twice by previous owners. Baimu values its healing ability despite its poor reputation as a battler. Chansey uses Sing and Heal Pulse, eventually treating injured humans and Pokémon during the competition. 22 25 35 36 41
  • Vibrava — A large temporary partner lent by Liu Ge. Baimu earns its cooperation by defeating it through coordination between Aron and Chansey. Vibrava provides aerial mobility, ranged attacks, and powerful moves such as Dragon Breath, Earth Power, Rock Slide, Bug Buzz, and Stomping Tantrum. 21 24 26
  • Jian’s three drug-affected Pokémon — Baimu takes custody of them rather than selling them. He intends to keep them within the organization and find them a better future despite their reduced market value and uncertain ability to accept a new Trainer. 41 49 50

  • Chansey — A shy, compassionate partner whom Baimu protects and encourages. He helps Chansey overcome its fear of battle and recognizes its value as a healer. 22 25 35 36
  • Vibrava — A temporary partner lent by Liu Ge. Baimu earns its cooperation through a fair battle rather than authority, and Vibrava becomes an important part of his competition team. 24 26
  • Cheng Hong — A loyal colleague and close companion from the mine assessment. Cheng Hong refuses to betray Baimu, assists his escape, and later remains part of his trusted circle. 5 9 21 50

  • Lairon and Chansey — Baimu’s Pokémon partners share a close team bond, with Lairon acting as a dependable protector and Chansey as a nurturing support partner. 24 26 48

Story Role and Major Arcs

Survival in Pyrite Town

Baimu begins as a poor outer member trying to obtain a Pokémon and improve his position within the Quicksand Team. The simulator provides an escape route from a society where wealth, connections, and faction membership determine access to opportunity. 1

The Mine Assessment

The assessment establishes Baimu’s willingness to protect others even when doing so threatens his own advancement. His rescue of injured participants and Aron turns him from an isolated survivor into a person others begin to trust. 3 11

Joining the Sand Group

Baimu’s official membership introduces him to the Quicksand Team’s factional hierarchy. He pursues education, strengthens Aron, and learns that protection from powerful leaders always carries political costs. 11 18

The Hound Team Competition

Baimu enters a six-hour wilderness competition designed as both factional warfare and paid entertainment for wealthy spectators. His traps and coordinated Pokémon tactics defeat multiple Hound Team members, while his rescues and kept promises establish his reputation for reliability. 21 32 45

The Jian Conflict

Jian represents the violence and spectacle of Pyrite Town at its worst. After Jian tortures allies and uses drug-enhanced Pokémon, Baimu defeats him, extracts information, and allows him to die slowly. The victory earns Baimu enormous tips but also pushes him closer to the brutality he condemns. 37 42

Squad Leader Promotion

After the competition, Baimu joins Liu Ge’s faction and becomes a Squad Leader. He gains money, housing, transportation, and authority while becoming more deeply involved in conflicts among the Quicksand, Hound, Crystal, and other groups. 45 48
