Phoros stepped over the railroad ties on the slope. The rock ceiling above him grew lower and lower, the air more and more stifling, and the stench in it heavier and heavier.
The assault squad followed him, remaining alert.
There was a vast space ahead.
Phoros pressed himself sideways against the rock wall, gestured behind him for vigilance, then cautiously poked just a little of his head around the corner to observe.
The Astartes tightened their grips on their weapons.
They had entered the second level.
The Night Vision Goggles revealed the full extent of the second-level mine.
The second level was slightly smaller than the first, with a lower dome and narrower rock walls.
There were still iron cages, but far fewer of them, and fewer red life-sign dots inside them.
For some reason, the red dots on this level were much smaller than those on the previous one. Could the civilians be in poor condition?
Phoros took another slight step forward, exposing one eye.
Then he saw the iron cages inside.

Countless children crowded together.
Perhaps the Greenskins had deliberately gathered all the children in one place.
The children wore tattered clothes. The youngest were perhaps three or four, while the oldest were no more than ten or so. Huddled in piles at the corners of their cages, their eyes wide with panic and fear, they resembled a flock of terrified baby birds clustered together for warmth.
