Background / History

The Emperor created the Astartes using his gene-tech and the genetic templates of the twenty Primarchs. Each Primarch originally commanded a superhuman Legion, nine of which later defected to Chaos during the Horus Heresy 1.

Astartes are recruited during adolescence and undergo nineteen standardized organ-transplant procedures before inheriting their Chapter’s gene-seed and bloodline. The process is extraordinarily dangerous, with survival odds described as roughly one in ten thousand 147 197. They are transformed into warriors intended to fight for their entire lives, rather than ordinary human soldiers.

Despite their engineered bodies and military conditioning, Astartes retain emotions, memories, loyalty, grief, and personal relationships. Tyrennius’s squadmate mourns his death, while the Blood Angels carefully recover his remains and equipment for burial on Baal 51 61. Their physical transformation therefore removes much of ordinary human life without completely erasing their humanity.

In the current era, loyalist Astartes Chapters serve as the Imperium’s elite military force against Chaos, xenos, and other threats. Once a Chapter joins a campaign, mortal armies normally defer strategic authority to its commanders 76. Traitor Astartes retain much of the same genetic and martial heritage but may become corrupted, possessed, or devoted to Chaos 1 174.

Appearance

A standard Astartes stands around two and a half meters tall and possesses an extremely broad, muscular build. An unarmored warrior weighs roughly 300 kilograms, while an Astartes in Ceramite Power Armor may approach one ton 34 44.

Distinguishing features include:

  • Massive, heavily modified physiques.
  • Strength sufficient to crush human bodies and tear through armor.
  • Chapter-specific Power Armor, colors, insignia, and heraldry.
  • Enhanced faces and imposing features; Blood Angels are particularly known for handsome appearances, often with golden hair and blue eyes 36 283.
  • Extensive battle honors and armor damage accumulated over centuries of warfare.
  • Astartes helmets equipped with optics, sensors, and external voice systems.
  • Specialized armor variants, including Terminator Armor and mortal-adapted Power Armor.

Physiology

Astartes physiology provides overwhelming advantages over ordinary humans.

  • They possess extraordinary strength, speed, reflexes, endurance, and resistance to injury 35 44.
  • Their tactical discipline and battlefield instincts are described as being embedded in their gene-seed 40 91.
  • Catalepsean Nodes allow them to remain awake for extremely long periods by alternating activity between the brain’s hemispheres 94.
  • They are sterile and cannot maintain ordinary human reproduction 336.
  • Their bodies remain vulnerable to sufficiently powerful weapons, including heavy anti-armor missiles, overwhelming psychic attacks, and concentrated enemy force 26 101.
  • Astartes cannot fly under their own power and require ships, transports, or other vehicles for rapid deployment 39.

Abilities & Skills

Superhuman Combat Ability

Astartes are designed as weapons of war. Ordinary humans and standard infantry weapons are generally incapable of stopping them.

  • A Blood Angel massacred hundreds of cultists with a Chainsword and bare-handed strikes 34 36.
  • Ceramite armor ignored massed autogun and laser fire during Tyrennius’s assault on a Chaos ritual 45.
  • Astartes can fight elite enemies, daemons, Tyranids, and other superhuman warriors in close combat.
  • Their strength allows them to break through fortifications, tear apart vehicles, and destroy physical or psychic barriers 162.
  • Their enhanced reflexes allow them to react to attacks that would overwhelm ordinary humans 163.

Tactical Instincts and Discipline

Astartes possess extensive combat training and battlefield awareness. Tyrennius selected concealed routes through unfamiliar tunnels, maintained formation, and immediately integrated Lin En’s early-warning ability into the squad’s tactics 40.

Applications include:

  • Coordinated squad movement.
  • Formation fighting and mutual protection.
  • Silent movement through difficult terrain.
  • Rapid battlefield assessment.
  • Tactical command of mortal and Astartes forces.
  • Coordinated assaults involving infantry, vehicles, artillery, and aircraft.
  • Continued combat despite severe injury and depleted ammunition 110 113.

Gene-seed and Chapter Heritage

Every Astartes inherits the gene-seed of a Primarch-descended Chapter. This creates biological and cultural continuity across generations.

  • Gene-seed preserves the Chapter’s genetic lineage.
  • The Blood Angels pass on memories and combat knowledge through their gene-seed 53.
  • Chapter identity influences armor, traditions, tactics, and psychological burdens.
  • Blood Angels inherit the legacy of Sanguinius, including the Black Rage and a strong tradition of sacrifice 37 48.
  • Astartes remain connected to fallen brothers through recovered equipment, burial rites, and Chapter records 51 53.

Power Armor

Power Armor multiplies an Astartes’s strength and protects the warrior from most conventional weapons.

  • Ceramite plating resists autoguns, lasers, and ordinary melee weapons 44 45.
  • Servo systems allow armored warriors to move and fight despite the armor’s enormous weight.
  • Armor monitors physical condition and provides battlefield information 77.
  • Helmets include optics, targeting systems, communications, and environmental protection.
  • Emergency armor systems can provide medical treatment or stimulants during critical battles 48.
  • Specialized models include Terminator Armor and Chapter-specific master-crafted suits.

Command and Specialist Roles

Astartes can serve as both battlefield warriors and specialist officers. Specialist officers are ranked at Sergeant level and may command ordinary Astartes 122.

Rank / Role Function
Chapter Master Commands an entire Chapter
Captain Commands a Company
Lieutenant Serves as a deputy company commander and may command part of a Company
Sergeant Commands a squad; specialist officers such as Chaplains, Librarians, Apothecaries, and Techmarines hold equivalent rank
Veteran Experienced battle-brother, often assigned to elite formations
Battle-Brother Standard fully inducted Astartes warrior
Recruit Astartes still undergoing training and advancement

Chapter Specialization

Astartes Chapters and Companies develop different battlefield identities.

  • The Blood Angels emphasize nobility, close combat, sacrifice, and devotion to Sanguinius 37 48.
  • The Ultramarines emphasize discipline, organization, coordinated warfare, and military doctrine.
  • Within the Ultramarines, the First Company consists of veteran Terminators, the Third specializes in anti-xenos warfare, the Fourth in defense, and the Fifth in coordinated infantry operations 97.
  • Successor Chapters may develop radically different combat cultures, such as the speed-focused Mantis Warriors or the close-combat-oriented Flesh Tearers 232 285.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Blood Angel Rescue and Tyrennius

A Blood Angels Astartes first appears directly while tracking Aeldari pirates and responding to reports of a Chaos cult attempting to open a Warp Rift 34. He single-handedly clears the cultist forces, protects the cave entrance, and allows Cecilia, Iron Hammer, and Lin En to proceed.

The warrior is later identified as Tyrennius, a squad leader of the Blood Angels’ Fifth Company. He joins the group’s investigation of the cultists and assigns Lin En the role of Early Warning after recognizing his tactical value 37 40.

Tyrennius eventually makes a final stand against the Skull Vanguard and a horde of daemons so that Lin En, Cecilia, and Iron Hammer can escape. He dies after defeating a Khorne Vanguard and preventing the Warp Rift from fully stabilizing 48 51.

His body is returned to Baal and buried in the Heroes’ Mausoleum, where his gene-seed, memories, and combat knowledge are preserved for future Blood Angels 53. His sacrifice later becomes part of Lin En’s motivation to protect Astartes and civilians alike.

Ultramarines and the Defense of Macragge

The Ultramarines initially underestimate Lin En, treating him as an unimpressive mortal Librarian attached to a Guard regiment 76. After witnessing his golden healing aura double the attributes of soldiers and Astartes across a battlefield, they begin competing with the Blood Angels and other Imperial institutions to claim him 77 80.

Lin En is transferred to the Ultramarines and appointed Chaplain of the Third Company. Although mortal and inexperienced with Chaplain equipment, he fights alongside the Astartes during the defense of Macragge 97 99.

His healing and support abilities transform the Third Company’s campaigns. He helps rescue the First Company from a Tyranid swarm, restores wounded Terminators, and enables vehicles to fight through Machine Spirit Resonance 107 113. The First and Third Companies’ bond is strengthened through their shared defense of civilians and mutual loyalty.

Warfare Against Biel-Tan and Chaos

The Ultramarines later use Lin En’s blessings to enhance large-scale assaults against Biel-Tan Craftworld. His support allows Terminator Veterans, Sentinel Mechs, and other Astartes forces to overwhelm Aeldari defenses and destroy critical infrastructure 161 169.

During an encounter with Word Bearers and daemon-possessed Astartes, the contrast between loyalist and traitor Space Marines becomes explicit. Fabian fights the possessed warriors while Lin En sustains him with healing and defensive power 174 178.

Blood Angels Successors and Civilian Rescue

Later campaigns feature Lin En working with Blood Angels successor Chapters, including the Lamenters, Flesh Tearers, and Blood Knights. These Astartes combine orbital bombardment, coordinated assaults, and close combat to rescue millions of civilians imprisoned by Orks 321 328.

Despite their frightening appearance and reputation, the Astartes repeatedly prioritize civilian survival. Phoros organizes medical treatment and evacuation, while Flesh Tearers help children and civilians despite their brutal battlefield image 325 327 330 336.
