Fan Ning retains memories of a recently graduated science-and-engineering office worker from another world, as well as a lifelong classical-music enthusiast who studied composers, theory, recordings, and piano. After crossing into a steam-industrial world, he assumes the identity of Caloen Van Ning while concealing the circumstances of his arrival from the authorities. He later resolves that both identities share the same devotion to music and accepts them as parts of himself. 1 2 22

He studies musicology at Saint Leniya University and was closely connected to Professor Anton Conall and Anton’s daughter, Hiran. His father has been missing for three years, the Turner Art Gallery has closed, and the family’s old black key becomes central to Fan Ning’s supernatural development. 3 26
