Background

Hiran is Professor Anton Conall's younger daughter. She and her father were exceptionally close; before his death, she had also been exposed indirectly to The Remnant of the Musical Scale through the musical activities held at home. She has an unnamed older sister who survived a school incident involving an evil-god-worshipping organization, only to later die by suicide under unexplained circumstances 2 16.

As a student at the Women's Grammar College, Hiran is diligent and academically capable enough to enter Saint Leniya University through its examination route. She plays violin, enjoys history books and opera, and knows Tulungalia alongside her father 2 23 42.

Personality

Hiran is polite, restrained, and notably mature for her age. Though physically delicate and deeply affected by grief and supernatural danger, she has firm opinions and expects to be treated as an equal rather than dismissed as a child 2 37.

Anton’s death leaves her struggling with denial and avoidance; she imagines him still returning from his study or descending the stairs at home. Music and Fan Ning’s companionship give her a way to express grief that she cannot easily articulate herself 25 26.

Her fear does not prevent her from thinking practically. Anton Conall’s Funeral

Hiran mourns her father alongside Fan Ning and Qiong. When Cecil warns that she is unsafe, she accepts Fan Ning’s protection immediately. At Anton’s grave, she looks to Fan Ning to choose the epitaph: “His era will come at last” 23 24.

Grief and Recovery

Fan Ning stays at Anton’s villa to help Hiran through the first days following the funeral. They clean the house, prepare meals, and listen to Anton’s sonatas; Hiran finds partial emotional release through Fan Ning’s funeral performance and Barcarolle 25 26.

Mirror Attack

An assassin emerges from a mirror in Anton’s house and attempts to kill Fan Ning while abducting Hiran. Hiran destroys the mirrors, assists Fan Ning during the fight, and is traumatized when he executes the captured attacker after interrogation 32 33.

Pursuit of Hidden Knowledge

After learning that Fan Ning is a Knower, Hiran asks to follow the same path. She argues that ignorance is more dangerous than knowledge for people already entangled with supernatural incidents; Fan Ning agrees to discuss it seriously when he better understands the risks himself 36 37.

Quartet and Retrospection Ritual

Hiran becomes the first violinist in Fan Ning’s planned salon quartet. She later helps Qiong conduct a Retrospection Ritual in the academy’s small chamber hall by supplying a Tulungalia prayer, contributing to the investigation into the deaths surrounding Anton and Fan Ning’s crossing-over incident 42 48.
