"Child..." A voice that seemed to come from far away suddenly sounded in Freya's mind. It was faint and distant, yet she heard it clearly.
Freya jumped. She could no longer hold her hands clasped in prayer before her chest and opened her eyes, looking all around. But she saw nothing except the battered wooden boards.
"Who's there? Are you the great Lord of Nature? Did you answer my prayer?" Freya asked in disbelief, still keeping her excited voice low.
The voice continued in a detached tone. "Prayer will not bring salvation. Endurance will only bring more suffering. Weakness is the true sin! Rise. Accept my gift and embrace the power to change your fate..."
In the Graveyard, Green's mouth twitched slightly as he delivered lines so melodramatic that even he felt embarrassed.
Through Freya's prayer, Green had read the little girl's memories. This was a deity's power over a believer: a believer had no privacy from the deity she worshipped. Green could sense that Freya had considerable talent in mental strength. Her soul had both wind and fire attributes, and her intuition was exceptionally keen. She was suited to becoming an Arcanist or a Medium. But Green was only a fake god and had no training to pass on for other supernatural professions. Freya was destined to become a Necromancer, and Green would have to pay the Graveyard another hundred Psychic Energy for it.
Green was not upset by the bill the Graveyard sprang on him at the last moment. Instead, he breathed a sigh of relief.
Once he paid the Psychic Energy, he would have the Graveyard's approval. It was much like gaining the rights of a citizen by paying taxes. If the Graveyard accepted what he was doing, then he had chosen the right path.
